Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies MP, recently announced that local resident Sharon Chamberlin, has been named the 2016 Mulgoa Woman of the Year.

“The Local Woman of the Year Award recognises women who have made notable and outstanding contributions to their communities, accomplishing positive outcomes for the local area,” Tanya Davies said.

“In particular, recipients of the Award need to demonstrate ongoing dedication in serving the community, deserving recognition for their achievements,” said Tanya Davies.

Ms Chamberlin has been recognised, most notably, for the instrumental role that she played in the establishment of Junior Jivers, a musical activities playgroup run by Glenmore Park Anglican Church, aimed at supporting mothers with young children.

“Sharon voluntarily devotes her time to working with the mothers and children that are in the Junior Jivers program, often dedicating more than 30 hours per week, to ensure that all feel welcomed and included, as part of her caring and friendly disposition,” Tanya Davies said.

The Award was presented to Ms Chamberlin at Glenmore Park Anglican Church, while she was talking with mothers and children participating in Junior Jivers.

“Unsurprisingly to anybody that knows Sharon, she is not one for ceremonial niceties or unnecessary fl air. Instead of holding a formal presentation, Sharon was more concerned about serving at Junior Jivers, emblematic of the community-minded person that she is,” said Tanya Davies.

Tanya Davies was jubilant in her praise for the work ethic and dedication that has been exhibited by Sharon Chamberlin.

“Sharon Chamberlin is an example for all of us to follow in selfl essly supporting others and in advancing the interests of the Mulgoa community and its people,” said Tanya Davies.

FAITH – ANGLICAN PARISH OF MULGOA

Article Written + Submitted by: Parishioner Margaret

Sunday Service Times: 8:30am St Thomas’ Mulgoa 10:30am St Paul’s Warragamba. 7pm Glenmore Park Anglican Church

After the bombing of Darwin in February 1942, the residents of Aboriginal institutions were evacuated from the Northern Territory. A group of women and children from Groote Eylandt and Roper River Mission Stations were sent to the old rectory in the grounds of St Thomas church. The children attended Mulgoa school and went to church on Sunday. Some of the children stayed for eight years before the mission was closed and although a few stayed locally, most were moved on to other institutions.

Joyce Dukes, one of the original children, organised a reunion to Mulgoa in 2001 and a group met at St Thomas church. Joyce is a talented artist and the group worked together on a series of paintings which Joyce used as the basis for an artwork which hangs in the church as a record of their stay.

Several of the Mission children moved on to become very successful. John Moriaty was taken from his mother aged 4 and sent to Mulgoa. John founded the Balarinji Design Studio and created the two largest mobile artworks in the world, the famous Qantas 747s painted with Aboriginal motifs. John wrote his autobiography ‘Saltwater Fella’ in 2000 which included his childhood in Mulgoa. He was awarded the Member of the Order of Australia in 2000.

Gordon Briscoe was evacuated to Mulgoa with his mother. In 1975 Gordon worked with Fred Hollows on the National Trachoma and Eye Health Program as Assistant Director. Gordon was awarded Membership of the Order of Australia in 2002 for his work in the Aboriginal Medical and Legal Services.

Harry Huddlestone moved to Warragamba and worked on the dam as boatman and diver. He taught many local children to swim and helped the police with rescue and recovery work on the Nepean river. He was highly regarded in the community working with the United Protestant Church which became the Anglican church in 1961. Harry was ordained a Deacon in Darwin in 1987.

All the children who stayed in Mulgoa at the time would have their own stories and there is more information available at the church.

Last month saw the RMS release more detailed plans on Stage 4 of Northern Rd as well as 8 options for the M12 that will run from the M7 to Northern Rd. The RMS are still working out how they can join the New Northern Road, Northern Road, Elizabeth Drive and the M12 in a matter that will fl ow.

They are holding Community Information Sessions on Wednesday 2 March (3–6pm) Kemps Creek Public School, 100 Cross Street, Kemps Creek and on Saturday 5 March (10am–1pm) Holy Family Primary School, Lot 32, Willowdene Ave, Luddenham. I think it is very important to attend and have your say on these two very major projects.

The word around town is that the Sydney Science Park Proposal at Luddenham will get the green light, also

last month the new owners of the Twin Creeks estate at Luddenham met with Penrith Council to discuss their future plans for this strategic site. The Twin Creeks Development consortium purchased Twin Creeks Golf and Country Club last year and have plans to capitalise on the site’s key location near the future Western Sydney Airport to provide accommodation and conference facilities in Luddenham.

A Big weekend last month at The Luddenham Show, now celebrating its 125th Year, the Offi cial opening took place on Saturday Afternoon with Karen McKeown (Mayor of Penrith), Ross Fowler, Ned Mannoun (Mayor of Liverpool), Tanya Davies MP (Member for Mulgoa), Fiona Scott MP (Member for Lindsay) with Nicki Gillis singing our National Anthem.

The Show was actually paused for 15 minutes on Saturday with a massive storm. Lots of comments on Luddenham’s Got Talent, and huge congratulations to Abbey McPherson coming in fi rst place, with Baylee McPherson second and Blake Williams in third. It was a great show, thanks to all who were involved and helped out.

If you have an opinion on what Luddenham of the future should be like, please email your thoughts or views to [email protected]

Damian and the Elders team at the newly opened Sliverdale office.

Elders On The Expand, Now @ SilverdaleElders Real Estate has opened a new offi ce in

Silverdale making this their third offi ce in the Penrith region.

Elders Real Estate Silverdale opened on 25th January 2016 and is located at Silverdale Shopping Centre – 7/2320 Silverdale Road, Silverdale NSW 2752. We are overwhelmed with support after winning the Penrith 2015 Outstanding Real Estate Agency Award, that we decided to do it all again.

Owners Damian and Kylie Sexton chose Silverdale as the location for their third offi ce,

as they were local residents of the Silverdale area for many years. Mr Sexton has also worked in the local area for many years and therefore maintains strong relationships with local clients and knows the area well.

Elders Real Estate’s Silverdale offi ce will off er assistance in all areas including buying, selling and renting which is provided by a dedicated sales team. A local offi ce like Silverdale allows for clients to go and visit the team in person who have the ability to assist with all real estate enquiries.

The local team at Silverdale ensure that their clients receive the benefi ts of a local agent when managing investment properties. They off er a buyer’s agent to help those looking to buy as well as a sales associate who brings in new listing and manages all properties right up until settlement.

The Silverdale offi ce also works closely with the Wallacia offi ce which is located only a short distance away to ensure that a dedicated and complete team is available in order to assist all clients when buying, selling or renting a property.

Working alongside the staff at both the Penrith and Wallacia offi ces, the friendly and experienced team at Silverdale are able to cover a wide area assisting members of the community in fi nding their perfect home.

Elders Real Estate Silverdale can be contacted through the Elders Wallacia Offi ce as communications are being set up 02 4773 9511 or elderswallacia.com.au.

Fatal Motorcycle Crash – Mulgoa

Pastor’s CornerAs a child growing up, Easter was about chocolate eggs and

the Easter show. Well, as an adult I still enjoy the chocolate eggs, and I occasionally manage to go to the Easter show; but the real significance of Easter is far more important. Because is about God’s love for mankind, which culminated in God the Father sending His Son to earth, to pay the ultimate price for our sins.

The death of anybody brings mixed feelings, grief, pain and suffering and sometimes the end of difficult circumstances. All of these were present at Jesus’ Crucifixion; there is no doubt that those close to Him experienced grief. Their grief was in the loss of someone they loved, but even more their hope had been built around Jesus establishing an earthly kingdom, which would free them from Roman tyranny. The Disciples and their supporters were fearful that they too would be arrested and punished. Jesus restored their hope by his appearance to them, prior to ascending into Heaven.

There is no doubt that Jesus suffered beyond our imagination during those days. The betrayal by Judas for thirty pieces of silver; the false accusations and an unfair biased trials by Pontius Pilate and Herod; the crowd choosing to release a murderer Barabbas, instead of an innocent man Jesus; The crown of thorns forced onto Jesus’ head; the nails that pierced his hands; the mocking of the crowd and the soldiers; the sign above him ‘This is the King of the Jews’; the sword that pieced his side; and the casting of lots for His clothes; every part of this was for you and I.

By accepting Jesus as your Lord and Saviour , we receive forgiveness of our sins; that includes all the past, present and our future sins, freely available through faith to all mankind; 2 Corinthians 5:17 says, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!”

As you celebrate this Easter season, give thanks and remember the sacrifice that Jesus made for you.God Bless, Lyndon

PARENTS CORNER

When parents give their children negative emotional messages that focus on who the child is rather than his or her behaviour, they unwittingly dig a pit of shame so deep and so wide, it may take the child a lifetime to climb out of it.

“You do it deliberately to annoy me”“I’m going to ring grandma to tell her how awful you are”“You are as stupid as your father”“Go ahead and try it, you’ll just fail like you always do”“Why are you so clumsy?”“I’m so angry with you I can’t stand the sight of you”Negative and emotional messages that attack a child’s sense

of self and what she can do, leave their mark and can lead to mental health problems into adolescence and adulthood.

When parents approach a child’s mistaken behaviour at the level of the behaviour, they say things like…

“I’m really disappointed that you kicked the ball at the laundry window, especially as I warned you about it fi ve minutes ago.”

“What might have been a better choice?”“When you and your brother argue, I feel so frustrated.”A little bit of guilt is healthy and adaptive. Children learn what

is acceptable behaviour when parents focus on communicating what they didn’t like about the behaviour and how the child might do better next time. Prolonged ranting, raving, lecturing, and anger cause excessive guilt which induces shame.

One of my colleagues saw an interaction between a parent and a child the other day. The mother screamed at him “how many times do I have to tell you not to do that” and she walked away from him. The little boy, no older than 3, put his head down and banged his head with both fi sts. He then went and sat behind a park bench and cried.

Was he feeling shame or guilt do you think? Is he learning that he can’t rely on the adults in his life to help organise his thoughts and feelings, and more importantly his behaviours?

The Value of AdviceIn 2015 for the fi rst time ever Mortgage Brokers originated 50% of all new Home Loans.

Since that time this fi gure has continued to grow to over 60%.So why have Mortgage Brokers grown in popularity to the point that they’re beating the

Banks at their own game?It is true that Mortgage Brokers are required to have minimum education levels and

are required to maintain their knowledge every year whereas Bank employees have no minimum standards.

It is also true that Mortgage Brokers have access to hundreds of home loans with diff erent features and diff erent approval criteria and can quickly and easily compare them to fi nd you the right loan at a great interest rate.

It is also a little known fact that top tier Mortgage Brokers have access exclusive “Better than the Branch” pricing, priority loan processing and the ability to order property valuations prior to loan submission. Something else the Banks can’t do.

All great reasons to use a Mortgage Broker but I think the real reason Mortgage Brokers are so popular comes down to one word. Advice.

You see Mortgage Brokers works for you. Unlike banks they don’t try to shoehorn you into one of 4 or 5 products, instead they use their skill and knowledge to structure your fi nances in a manner that suits you.

Choosing the right home loan is more than fi nding the lowest rate. It’s about fi nding the right Home Loan that matches your current needs, your lifestyle, your fi nancial habits and your future goals.

You’re not just looking for a Home Loan, you’re looking for a fi nancial partner who can advise you all the way through your fi nancial life.

At Great Aussie Dream we pride ourselves on our knowledge and skill and over the 13 years we’ve been in business we have had the privilege of building many partnerships with our clients and have enjoyed being a part of their journey.

If you would like a fi nancial partner to help you buy your fi rst home or your next home; your fi rst investment property or your tenth, we would love to be a part of your journey too.

If you’re sick of being in constant back pain

for your Assessment Session!

Valued at $55Andreas KleinNutritionist &

Remedial TherapistBSc, Adv Dip Nut Med, DRM

I’ve personally developed this technique after 16yrs experience:

“After years of severe back pain I’m now enjoying golf, fully pain free and even started brick-laying again!” – John Hasler, Glenmore Park

“I’d given up really - I’d tried so many things. In just a couple of sessions the pain and muscle spasms had gone. I recommend your

work to anyone.” – Craig Gibson, Richmond

Work & play like you used to after just a few sessions!

It works well for shoulders & knees too.

Pars Defect Pain – Rest is Not the Only Answer

The ‘pars interarticularis’ (part of the vertebral arch) is one of two (left or right) bony bridges that connect the upper with the lower facet joints in a vertebra. A pars defect (spondylolysis) is a break or weakness (see diagram) in one or both of these bridges. It can be due to:

1. A congenital abnormality (present at birth) called an ‘attenuated pars’, or

2. A stress fracture. The main vertebrae aff ected are L5 (85 - 95%), and L4 (5 – 15%),

but rarely higher lumbar vertebrae. It can be diagnosed by plain X-ray, CT or MRI. 50 - 81% of people with spondylolysis end up with the bilateral fractures of the pars interarticularis, resulting in forward slippage (spondylolisthesis) of the vertebra.

Most pars defects are asymptomatic, but some present as lower back pain. Typically when the patient stands on one leg and leans backwards, pain results. When the defect is on one side only, standing on the opposite leg elicits the pain (Syrmou 2010). Pain typically gets worse with sports and better with rest (Harris nd)

About 6% of the general population have a pars defect (Syrmou 2010). However the injury is more common in adolescents participating in high risk sports (gymnastics, diving, weight lifting, wrestling, rowing, fi gure skating, dancing, volleyball, soccer, tennis). Up to 30.4% experience lower back pain (Malanga 2015) often due to a pars defect (McTimoney & Micheli 2003).

No optimal treatment plan exists in the literature, pain relief medications may be used but nonsteroidal anti-infl ammatory drugs (NSAIDs) should be avoided as they slow down the bone growth and healing (Syrmou 2010). Some authors (Harris nd) state that ‘only rest’ can heal a pars defect, with acupuncture and massage having no benefi t. This is incorrect.

Rest is vital, however stiff lower back muscles increase the forces on the vertebrae to which they are attached and so the likelihood of re-injury. Infl ammation reduces the ability of tissue to heal. Muscle elongation therapy uses both dry needling techniques and specifi c muscle elongation techniques to address both these issues, and (along with rest) helps many cases of long standing back pain associated with pars defects to heal very nicely.

If you have unresolved pars-defect related back pain, why not come talk to us at BHW - see our ad for contact details.

Happy Easter!Chocolate Dangers at Easter Time

We all know Easter is a fun time spent with family and chocolate...lots and lots of delicious chocolate! Easter is a great time for the human members of the family, but the infamous Easter egg hunt can end in tragedy for our four legged friends. Chocolate contains theobromine and caff eine, which when ingested by a

dog or cat, causes vomiting, diarrhoea, hyperactivity, increased heart rate, restlessness, muscle twitching, increased urination, excessive panting and if left untreated can be rapidly fatal.

If your dog does accidentally eat some chocolate it is vitally important that they are seen within 30 minutes to an hour by your local veterinarian. The veterinarian will give an injection to make your pet vomit, which removes most of the toxins from the body. Sometimes, your pet will be hospitalised, where intravenous fl uids may be used, an enema or stomach pump may be required, and we may also need to use muscles relaxants and activated charcoal.

There are a few simple precautions you can take to ensure

that your pet has a safe Easter:

• Hide your Easter eggs in areas which cannot be accessed by your pet.

• Ensure small children do not give your pet any chocolate.• Ensure all chocolate is kept out of reach from your pets.

Dogs have a good sense of smell and will fi nd chocolate in kid’s schoolbags!

• Distract your pet with their favourite treats while chocolate is around.

Colouring In Competition

In the spirit of Easter what better way to brighten up the veterinary hospital, than to host a colouring in competition. All entries will be displayed on the walls of the veterinary hospital.

You can download the entry form from our website www.orchardhillsvet.com.au, Facebook page or pop into the veterinary hospital and pick up a copy.

Post your entries to Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital, 377 Wentworth Road, Orchard Hills, NSW 2748, or drop them in at the veterinary hospital.

All entries must be received by 9am on Tuesday 29th March 2016. Please ensure your full contact details (name, address, phone number, email) are on the back of the entry form or envelope.

Winners will be drawn and notifi ed at 10am on Tuesday 29th March 2016.

Check out our website for more information. www.orchardhillsvet.com.au or join us on Facebook.

We look forward to meeting you and your pets at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital, and please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team.

For more information check out our Facebook, website www.orchardhillsvet.com.au or call 02 4736 2027.

Wallacia Post Offi ce Under New ManagementThe Wallacia Post Offi ce came under

new ownership in December 2015, with new local resident Dinesh and his family taking over from the Fowler Family after 107 years.

New owner Dinesh and his family have just begun their fi rst business venture by taking ownership of the Wallacia Post Offi ce. While this is the fi rst time Dinesh has owned a post offi ce, he does have experience working in the industry.

With years of experience working in the public sector, Dinesh felt that a small local post offi ce would be the perfect place to start his fi rst business venture.

Following the Fowler Family who owned the post offi ce for 107 years, Dinesh

reveals that he did feel some pressure to start, but has been overwhelmed with the support of the local community.

He said “I was afraid at fi rst and I was worried about maintaining certain standards, but everyone has been so welcoming and supportive.”

Dinesh is currently just enjoying his new business but does hope to maybe expand or develop his business in the future.
