The MU-1 LAN interface kit MU1-LIK is a development kit for planning radio system applications with a LAN interface connection function that uses the embedded low power radio modem MU-1. Purchasing the kit enables you to begin evaluating communication with the MU-1 immediately. The MU1-LIK of the MU-1 LAN interface kit is very convenient since it allows you to control the MU-1 located at a distance from your computer via a LAN. The MU1-LIK incorporates the Lantronix XPort *1, and using the XPort Serial - Ethernet conversion function and general purpose I/O function *2, it interfaces directly with the MU-1 UART. The on-board MU-1 can be controlled using simple, dedicated commands, so that the developer can concentrate on designing the protocols for transmitting and receiving data, without needing to be aware of control of the radio component. The MU1-LIK can be used with a variety of operating systems (Windows 98, Me, 2000, XP).*3 *1 For detailed information about XPort, refer to the Operation Guide for XPort on the setup disk. In addition, for the latest information about XPort, refer to the Lantronix website. *2 Used for mode control of the on-board MU-1. *3 Before using this product, it is first necessary to install the Redirector and Device Installer. For installation, use the setup launcher on the setup disk. Next, setup XPort with reference to Chapter 4 “Setup and Evaluation”, and check the operation of the module with the Evaluation Program. Do not change the XPort firmware in the MU1-LIK.

1.1.1 The MU1-LAN In this Operation Guide, for the sake of convenience, the MU-1 LAN interface board MU1-LANIF with the embedded low power radio modem MU-1 mounted on it is referred to as the MU1-LAN. Before using the kit, mount the MU-1 on the MU1-LANIF. When mounting the MU-1, observe the following cautions, and carry out the soldering carefully.

Cautions for soldering To prevent damage to the connectors, solder the joints quickly. Avoid connection defects. In order to prevent damage to the MU-1 and the MU1-LANIF from static electricity, ground yourself before starting work. Do not cause short circuits by dripping solder on the board.

Important It is not possible simply to replace communication using existing RS232C system equipment connected with a cable, with MU1-LAN wireless communication. The hardware and software must be designed specifically for the MU-1.

1.1.2 Explanation of terminology The meaning of the terminology used in this Operation Guide is as follows. 1. The “setup disk” is the CD-ROM that comes with each MU-1 series kit, that contains the setup program,

Operation Guide and so on.

2. The “Evaluation Program” is a program for evaluation of the MU-1 series of products, called the MU-1 Evaluation Software Program MU1-ESP. It is found inside the “Circuit Design” folder that appears on the desktop of your PC after installation.

3. The “Device Installer” is the Lantronix “XPort Device Installer”.

4. The “Redirector” is the Lantronix “XPort COM Redirector”.

1.1.3 Features

The kit uses the MU-1 that has obtained the CE mark. You can connect it to a LAN and control it from a local computer Supports the 10BASE-T/100BASE-TX network interface Supports a COM port bit rate of 2,400 bps to 57,600 bps You can communicate between different networks You can connect it directly to the RJ45-LAN receptacle of your computer (using a cross cable) Circuit diagrams for making user systems are publicly available. The MU1-LAN can be embedded in a case, and can be used for making products for radio control from a PC. The compact MU1-LAN (47 mm × 94 mm × 14 mm) fits in a small housing. Features of the MU-1 Evaluation Program;

1. You can issue all commands for controlling the MU1-LAN. 2. There is a test program for checking the communication performance of the MU1-LAN. 3. There is an air monitor function for checking the status of radio waves in the field.

XPort RJ45 receptacle: Connect the shielded LAN cable. DC socket:

DC socket for the external AC adapter. For the supply voltage, use an AC adapter with current capacity of 500 mA or more at DC +5 V.

Power supply terminal: Used when taking the power supply from the user equipment. Supply power at DC +5 V with the correct polarity. Do not use the DC socket at the same time.

Power switch: The power switch connected to the DC socket or power supply terminal. Power LED: The LED comes on when the power switch is turned on. λ/4 Lead antenna: A λ/4 long Lead antenna. The on-board XPort has LEDs to show the operating status of the network connection. When connected at 10 Mbps, the left LED comes on, and at 100 Mbps, the right LED comes on.

The details of the LED status are as follows.

* When making your circuit board based on this circuit diagram, pay due attention to high frequency noise around the XPort and from the interface.

1. Exercise caution in placement of the MU-1 and XPort. In addition, there are cases where shielding is necessary around the XPort. 2. Add a noise filter to the XPort signal wire. 3. Ensure a sufficiently large ground pattern for the MU-1. In addition, provide shielding for the signal wire too.

The MU1-LAN (MU-1 + MU1-LANIF) uses a COM port (VCP: virtual COM port) set by the Lantronix Redirector. Since it is basically used in the same way as the MU-1, refer to “Chapter 4 How to Use the MU-1” in the MU-1 Operation Guide. Here we will explain the differences.

Using the MU1-LAN you can control an MU-1 located at a distance from a local computer via a network. In addition, you can also communicate between different networks. Set the network address of the MU1-LAN to the same address as the network to which it is connected, and ensure that it does not duplicate that of the host address.

In order to use the MU1-LAN, it is necessary to perform various settings for the on-board XPort using the Device Installer and Redirector. In addition, we recommend that you use the Evaluation Program to evaluate the equipment before building your user system. For details, refer to Chapter 4 “Setup and Evaluation”.

You can connect the XPort directly to your PC. For the connection use a cross (shielded) LAN cable. Set the XPort and PC to the same network address, and ensure that it does not duplicate that of the host address.

Initialize the unit to the factory default settings if communication with the MU-1 mounted on the MU1-LAN is not possible or if you are uncertain of the internal settings. How to initialize the MU-1 Turn on the power while pressing the initialize switch. Then turn the power off and on once again to reset the unit to the default settings. For details, refer to the default values for each command in the MU-1 Operation Guide. Status after resetting The values of the main parameters after initializing are as follows. 1. In order to make the various settings of the XPort of the MU-1, it is necessary to install the Device Installer and Redirector. In addition, to carry out various kinds of evaluation, install the MU-1 Evaluation Program. For installation, use the setup launcher on the setup disk provided. Install the driver and programs below in accordance with the following procedure. Before starting the installation, be sure to read the instructions in the setup launcher. These items must be installed in each computer that you intend to use. After installing the driver, start up the Redirector and Device Installer, set up the virtual COM port used by the MU1-LAN, and carry out the basic XPort settings. Before carrying out these tasks, obtain permission to use the network from your LAN administrator. In addition, obtain an IP address. 1. Redirector (virtual COM port driver) The MU1-LAN uses the XPort Serial - Ethernet conversion function. The control program created by the user accesses the host COM port of the computer (except for mode control). The Redirector makes a virtual COM port for your computer, and controls the Ethernet connection used by XPort. 2. Device installer The Device Installer makes the internal initial settings related to the IP address and COM port required for using XPort. The MU1-LAN uses the general purpose port of the XPort for internal mode control, and the Device Installer makes these initial settings as well. 3. MU-1 Evaluation Software Program (MU1-ESP) Before building your user system, we recommend that you install the Evaluation Program and check the actual LAN connection. In addition, the MU1-LAN uses the general purpose port of the XPort for internal mode control, so the user should create a program that uses the TCP client socket to control the general purpose port. You can also use the Evaluation Program to analyze this aspect. In this Operation Guide, we explain only the items necessary for using the Evaluation Program to evaluate the functions of the MU1-LAN. For information about the special functions required for your user system, refer to the Lantronix Operation Guide (on the setup disk). The contents and procedures explained in this Operation Guide are also necessary for operating user systems that use the MU1-LAN.

The support provided by Circuit Design is limited to the basic settings of Xport required to operate the MU1-LAN. Other functions are the responsibility of the user (developer). The basic settings are the items explained in this Operation Guide.

4.2.1 IP address setting

In order to use the MU1-LAN, it is first necessary to set the IP address in accordance with the network environment. Use an IP address specified by your LAN administrator. Set the network address of the MU1-LAN to the same address as the network to which it is connected, and take care that it does not duplicate that of the host address.

Connect the MU1-LAN to the LAN, and from the Windows Start menu, select [Lantronix], [Device Installer] to start up the program. The main window shown in Figure 4-1 appears. Click the [Assign IP] button. This opens the Assign IP Address wizard shown in Figure 4-2. Follow the instructions in the wizard. Figure 4-1 The main window

In this window, carefully enter the hardware address of the XPort mounted on the MU1-LAN. The hardware address is shown on the top of the XPort. Click the “Next” button.

In this window select whether to assign an IP address automatically or to specify one yourself. This document explains how to set an IP address directly. Click the “Next” button.

Enter the IP address of the MU1-LAN. In addition, enter the subnet mask and default gateway. Be sure to obtain permission from your network administrator before making the settings. Click the “Next” button.

Click the “Assign” button. When the settings are completed, the “Finish” button becomes active. Some time is required before settings are completed. During that time, do not operate the equipment.

4.2.2 Checking the IP address To check that the IP address is set for the MU1-LAN, click the “Search” button in the main window shown in Figure 4-1.

4.2.3 COM port setup The MU-1 mounted on the MU1-LAN and the XPort are connected using the UART interface. Now set the properties of the UART interface and the XPort local port number. Figure 4-6

4.2.4 General purpose port setup The MU1-LAN uses the general purpose port of the XPort for internal mode control. In addition, it uses hardware flow control (CTS/RTS). Here we will explain how to setup the general purpose port. Figure 4-11

Return to the “Configure Device” window

and click the “Advanced” tab. The screen shown in Figure 4-11 appears. Set the “OEM Configurable Pins” Properties.

To change the network address of the connected MU1-LAN, in the main window select the XPort for the MU1-LAN to change, and click the “Assign IP” button. The screen shown below appears. Follow the instructions to change the settings.

Caution: 1. Clicking the “Assign” button at the end of the wizard overwrites the IP address. Overwriting takes a long time (3

minutes or more). During that time, do not operate the equipment. When the change is completed, the “Finish” button becomes active. Finish the wizard.

4.3.1 Virtual COM port setup Use the Redirector to set the virtual COM port used by the Evaluation Program. From the Windows Start menu, select [Lantronix Redirector], [Configuration] to start up the program. The main window shown in Figure 4-13 appears. Figure 4-13 The main window

Before designing a user application system using the MU1-LAN, first use the Evaluation Program MU1-ESP to evaluate the equipment. Here we provide additional explanation for evaluation of the MU1-LAN. Refer to the Operation Guide of the Evaluation Program for information about the other items.

4.4.1 Preparation and starting up the program Preparation

1. Attach the shielded LAN cable to the MU1-LAN and connect it to the LAN. 2. Start up the Device Installer, and make the basic settings of the MU1-LAN. 3. Start up the Redirector, and create a virtual COM port to use with the MU1-LAN.

Start up To start up the Evaluation Program, run the execution file MU1_EP.exe in the “Circuit Design¥MU1-EP” folder on the desktop of your PC. The command window shown in Figure 4-18 appears.

4.4.2 Settings after startup In order to use the MU1-LAN, it is necessary to make network settings immediately after starting up the Evaluation Program. Figure 4-18

Operating procedure 1. In the modem selection box in the figure at left, select the MU1-LAN xxxMHz connected to the LAN. 2. Click the button and set the COM port. 3. Click the “COM port” button and open the COM port. 4. Set the IP address and local port with the Assign IP Address wizard shown in Figure 4-20.

When the “OK” button is clicked, the program automatically attempts to make a connection. If it connects normally, the command window of the Evaluation Program opens, and you can begin evaluation via the LAN. Hint: Clicking “Save Settings” saves the settings and they

are enabled at the next start up.

When finishing the Evaluation Program, always return to the command window and close the COM port. In addition, when the program is running, do not turn off the power or unplug the cables. If these procedures are not followed, the network connection may not finish normally, or the program may hang up and affect operation of the system.

If the UART related parameters of the MU1-LAN are changed, they become effective immediately after the MU1-LAN returns a response to the command. Therefore before issuing the next command, be sure to change the COM port settings (Serial Settings) with the Device Installer. Click the “Update” button to enable the settings. In addition, always reset the Evaluation Program COM port.

In systems where a non-directional antenna is required, it is important that the antennas of the transmitting station and target stations stand vertically in order to exploit communication performance to the maximum. If the planes of polarisation of the radio waves do not match, receive sensitivity may drop significantly. Note that if, for reasons peculiar to the equipment, the antenna must be inside the case, communication performance will be very significantly degraded when handled in the following ways, since these methods contravene antenna theory. It is the responsibility of the user to test performance thoroughly when designing equipment. 1. Putting the antenna inside a metal case 2. Wrapping the antenna around the MU1-LAN itself 3. Locating the antenna beside the ground pattern of your circuit board 4. Fitting the antenna inside by bending it 5. Cutting the antenna to make it shorter The antenna provided with the MU1-LAN is a 1/4λ whip antenna. Whip antennas are antennas that substitute the ground as one end of a dipole antenna. For this reason the ground has a very important meaning. Although the main unit of the MU1-LAN has the function of a ground, in order to exploit its performance fully, connect it to the largest possible ground pattern when mounting it on your circuit board. In addition, in the case of two way communication between fixed stations, inclining the whip antenna of the MU-1 forwards may increase its communication range. Carry out tests in the specific environment of use.

The MU1-LAN is a product that uses an LAN interface to interface with external equipment. The MU1-LAN is made for embedding in another final product, and is not a stand-alone product. The regulatory compliance assessment of the MU1-LAN in accordance with the R&TTE Directive depends on the final product in which the MU1-LAN is embedded. Regulatory compliance assessment should be carried out on the responsibility of the manufacturer of the final product. For details of the CE mark, refer to the MU-1 Operation Guide.

Point: The MU-1 radio modem has passed the regulatory compliance assessment in accordance with R&TTE Directive EN1999/5/EC as a stand-alone product, and has received the CE mark.

1. Always use shielded LAN cable for connecting the MU1-LAN. 2. Devise ways of isolating the unit as far as possible from noise from other embedded equipment and from other sources of noise. 3. Arrange the MU1-LAN so that it will not be covered by the operator’s hand or the like. 4. The MU1-LAN does not have a waterproof structure. If the antenna is located outside the main unit, use a structure that prevents water droplets from entering the case.

The program that controls the MU1-LAN (MU-1 + MU1-LANIF) is a program that accesses the COM port. The method of developing a program is basically the same as for the MU-1, except for some hardware aspects. Refer to “Chapter 5 How to Develop a Program” in the MU-1 Operation Guide. Here we provide additional explanation for the MU1-LAN. In addition, refer to the XPort Operation Guide.

The MU-1 mounted on the MU1-LAN has a command mode, binary mode, and text mode, and these are controlled by the MODE terminal. However, the XPort mounted on the MU1-LAN cannot control the MODE terminal directly with COM port signals. Therefore it is necessary to connect the MODE terminal to the XPort general purpose port (CP2) and use a control method using TCP. For this reason, besides creating a COM port access program, it is necessary to create a program that uses the TCP client socket to control the general purpose port of the XPort and that can switch the MODE terminal. Although the XPort general purpose port has the 3 ports CP1, CP2, and CP3, ports CP1 and CP3 use COM hardware flow control (RTS and CTS). We will use CP2 for MODE control, however it is necessary first to set CP2 to OUT mode using the Device Installer. In order to control the XPort general purpose port with the TCP client socket, set the IP address, and issue a control command to port number 77F0h (30704). (For details, refer to “The GPIO Interface” in the XPort Operation Guide.) The control command codes (Hex values) for switching from the command mode to the binary mode or text mode are as follows. 1B 02 00 00 00 02 00 00 00 1B is the “Set current states” command. Send it to the TCP client socket in this order. Send all 9 bytes of the command and parameter. To switch the MU-1 from the binary mode or text mode to the command mode, send the following code. 1B 02 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 The response from the XPort to these commands is 5 bytes including the changed value.

Point: Use the DTR line of the normal COM port for mode control of the MU-1 series product connected to the computer.

1. The radio transmission rate of the MU1-LAN is fixed at 9,600 bps. Note that this is different from the

communication rate of the COM port. In addition, to achieve a radio link, besides the user data, data consists of a frame structure with a preamble, control data, error checking data and so on added. Due to this overhead, the effective rate for radio transmission is about 6,800 bps.

2. Hardware flow control using RTS and CTS signals (from the COM terminal of the computer) is used for serial

access of the MU1-LAN. The CTS signal is the output signal from the MU1-LAN, and when CTS is High the MU1-LAN can receive data. When CTS is Low, the internal data buffer of the MU1-LAN is full and the MU1-LAN cannot receive. The RTS signal is the output signal from the computer, and when RTS is High the MU1-LAN outputs data. When RTS is Low, data output stops.

3. The modes (command, text, binary) of the MU1-LAN are switched as follows.

a. Switching between the command mode and binary mode. To switch from the command mode to the binary mode, issue the ‘@MDBI command’, then set the DTR terminal to High. To switch from the binary mode to the command mode, set the DTR terminal to Low.

b. b. Switching between the command mode and text mode To switch from the command mode to the text mode, issue the ‘@MD TX’ command, then set the DTR terminal to High. To switch from the text mode to the command mode, set the DTR terminal to Low. To switch from the text mode to the command mode with the DTR terminal at High, issue the ESC code (escape code: 1Bh).

4. Operations when the power is turned on

After the unit is turned on, it takes 10 s for internal operation to become stable and to be recognized by the network. The connection program should take this into consideration.

5. When transmitting and receiving user data frames, the MU-1 outputs only frame data that is received correctly from UART, and discards frame data that experiences radio transmission errors. There is no response issued for such frames.

You can make a variety of security settings for the XPort using Telnet or the serial connection, however do not change these settings when using the MU1-LAN. In particular, if you forbid Telnet access, you will not be able to access the unit. In this case, although the XPort is changed to a serial connection, the XPort serial line is connected directly to the MU-1 so this operation is not possible. In addition, do not forbid the special port number 77F0h (30704). It is used for mode control of the MU1-LAN. Measures in an emergency If you cannot access the unit using Telnet and a serial connection is required, perform the following operation with the MU1-LAN circuit board. Briefly, this operation involves inserting an RS232C transceiver in the COM port of the computer, and connecting with the XPort serial terminal. In this way a serial connection is achieved, enabling you to change all the settings using communication software such as HyperTerminal. Procedure 1. Remove the R10 and R11 resistors (1 kΩ) from the data lines (RxD and TxD) between the XPort and MU-1

mounted on the MU1-LAN circuit board. The MU-1 TxD is for data output and RxD is for input. 2. Insert an RS232C transceiver (MAX232 or the like) in the data lines (RxD and TxD) of the COM port of your

computer. Use the same power supply as the MU1-LAN (DC +3.3 V). Use the same ground. 3. Connect the RS232C transceiver and data lines making sure that input and output are connected correctly. 4. Set HyperTerminal to 9,600 bps, with stop bit of 1, no parity, and no flow control. 5. Turn on the power of the MU1-LAN while pressing ‘x’ key with the HyperTerminal. 6. The operation menu appears in HyperTerminal. Follow the instructions to make the settings. 7. Replace the resistors in their original positions.

When designing an original LAN interface system similar to the MU1-LAN using the MU1-LAN (MU-1 + MU1-LANIF) mounted with the MU-1, bear in mind the items explained below.

Although the circuit diagram shown in this Operation Guide is a proper circuit, even when made in accordance with the circuit diagram, it may not perform sufficiently due to high frequency noise from the surrounding circuitry. Bear in mind the following when designing circuits.

1. Exercise caution in placement of the MU-1 and XPort. In addition, there are cases where shielding is necessary around the chip.

2. Add a noise filter to the XPort signal wire. 3. Ensure a sufficiently large ground pattern for the MU-1. In addition, provide shielding for the signal wire too.

Furthermore, use a shielded LAN cable. In order to assess the performance of your circuit board, issue the ‘@RS’ command to acquire the RSSI level of the MU-1 and check the level. It is necessary to acquire and assess the level of all the channels. Set a standard lower than the value acquired with the MU1-LAN. Here it is convenient to use the air monitor of the MU-1 evaluation program. In order to use the air monitor function, it is necessary to make a design in which the terminals of the MU-1 can be controlled from the outside.

In order to operate the XPort it is necessary to install the Redirector (virtual COM port driver) and the Device Installer. You can download the latest versions from the Lantronix website. The MU-1 uses the MODE terminal for internal mode control. Connect the MODE terminal to the XPort general purpose I/O port CP2. For details of the control method, refer to “Mode Control” in “How to Develop a Program”.

The user can overwrite the XPort firmware. The XPort firmware version is shown on the side of the unit. You can download the latest version of the firmware from the Lantronix website. Upgrade the XPort with the downloaded firmware using the Device Installer.

Cautions • As the radio module communicates using electronic radio waves, there may be cases where transmission is

temporarily cut off due to the surrounding environment and method of usage. The manufacturer is exempt from all responsibility relating to resulting harm to personnel or equipment and other secondary damage.

• Do not use the equipment within the vicinity of devices that may malfunction as a result of electronic radio waves from the radio module.

• The manufacturer is exempt from all responsibility relating to secondary damage resulting from the operation, performance and reliability of equipment connected to the radio module.

• Communication performance will be affected by the surrounding environment, so communication tests should be carried out before actual use.

• Ensure that the power supply for the radio module is within the specified rating. Short circuits and reverse connections may result in overheating and damage and must be avoided at all costs.

• Ensure that the power supply has been switched off before attempting any wiring work. • The case is connected to the GND terminal of the internal circuit, so do not make contact between the '+' side of

the power supply terminal and the case. • When batteries are used as the power source, avoid short circuits, recharging, dismantling, and pressure. Failure

to observe this caution may result in the outbreak of fire, overheating and damage to the equipment. Remove the batteries when the equipment is not to be used for a long period of time. Failure to observe this caution may result in battery leaks and damage to the equipment.

• Do not use this equipment in vehicles with the windows closed, in locations where it is subject to direct sunlight, or in locations with extremely high humidity.

• The radio module is neither waterproof nor splash proof. Ensure that it is not splashed with dirt or water. Do not use the equipment if water or other foreign matter has entered the case.

• Do not drop the radio module or otherwise subject it to strong shocks. • Do not subject the equipment to condensation (including moving it from cold locations to locations with a

significant increase in temperature.) • Do not use the equipment in locations where it is likely to be affected by acid, alkalis, organic agents or corrosive

gas. • Do not bend or break the antenna. Metallic objects placed in the vicinity of the antenna will have a great effect on

communication performance. As far as possible, ensure that the equipment is placed well away from metallic objects.

• The GND for the radio module will also affect communication performance. If possible, ensure that the case GND and the circuit GND are connected to a large GND pattern.

Warnings • Do not take apart or modify the equipment. • Do not remove the product label (the label attached to the upper surface of the module). • Using a module from which the label has been removed is prohibited.
