Mt. Hebron Nursery School is dedicated to fostering an environment that develops caring children who are life-long learners with inquisi-

tive and creative minds.

In many households, November means holiday meals and time in the kitchen and around the table with your family. Spending time in the kitchen with your preschooler can mean many of positive things for your child! Cooking can help young children learn and practice some basic math concepts and build language skills. The experience of creating meals with you can help build their self-confidence and lay foundation for

healthy eating habits.

Bringing kids into the kitchen can benefit them in a number of ways.

How Cooking Can Help Preschoolers

Build basic skills. You can help your child hone basic math skills by doing something as simple as counting eggs or pouring water into a measuring cup. You can ask what comes first, second, and third or count together as you spoon dough onto a cookie sheet. When you read a recipe together, you’re introducing new words to your child’s vocabulary and promoting literacy. Following steps in the recipe can work on listening skills.

Encourage an adventurous palate. Preschoolers are notoriously picky eaters, and bringing them into the kitchen to cook can help get them to open up to new tastes. When your 3-year-old daughter plays chef she might sample dishes she wouldn’t try if you just served them to her. So encourage kids to taste new ingredients you’re working with and talk about what they like and how healthy foods make a body grow.

Help young children explore with their senses. Kids learn by exploring with their senses and the kitchen is an ideal place to do that. Invite them to listen to the whir of the mixer, pound dough and watch it rise, smell it baking in the oven, and finally taste the warm bread fresh from the oven. If it smells good, looks appealing, and is easy to eat they may just be willing to try it!

Boost confidence. Preschoolers love to show what they can do and working in the kitchen provides opportunities to gain a sense of accomplishment. If they helped assemble the pizza, let them know that their help was important. You could name the pizza or another dish after your child. Serve “Ethan’s pizza” or “Amelia’s salad” for dinner tonight. Even if the end results are not exactly what you

expected, praise their efforts.

It may take a little flexibility and some simple prep work, but with the right expectations, your time in the

kitchen with your preschooler can be a culinary adventure you’ll both enjoy!

Ideal Jobs for Preschoolers in the Kitchen

A few tasks in the kitchen are particularly well-suited for children ages 3 to 5. The key is to give them “jobs” that meet their skill level and are something they enjoy. So if your child loves to pound, bring out the

bread dough and let your preschooler pound away. Here are some other ways children can help:

Pouring liquids into a bowl

Stirring batter

Tearing lettuce for salad

Adding ingredients

Assembling a pizza (sprinkling cheese and other ingredients)

Helping you “read” a cookbook by turning the pages

So look for a few cooking-related activities this month that your child can successfully complete inde-pendently or with a minimum of involvement from you. Don’t plan an elaborate project-- 5-10 minutes might be all your child wants to spend on an activity. Start small and keep it fun! Your preschooler will enjoy learning with you. For safety reasons, you should be in kitchen with them at all times, supervising and monitoring progress. Spending time in the kitchen with your children can foster an interest in food and

cooking that will last a lifetime!

different. Your child will be asked to bring in an item from home that goes on their head, hands and feet. Please be sure to check the calendar for those special days. At the end of the month, we will celebrate Thanksgiving by sharing what we are thankful for as well as the many holiday traditions. On November 24th we will cele-brate with our school friends by preparing

and sharing a Thanksgiving Feast.

We are very thankful for our MHNS families and we hope you have a wonderful Thanks-

giving holiday!

Miss Kimmy and Miss Barb would like thank: Katie Huber (Teddy’s Mom) for making play dough for our class; Meghan Jones (Ellie’s Mom) for helping us on gray squirrel day; Tina Patel (Maddox’s Mom) for helping us to paint pumpkins; Blaire Bycoffe (Benjamin’s Mom) and Alicia Wilmes (Miles’

Our 2 Day three year old girls and boys are adjusting beautifully to school. They are mak-ing new friends are ready to learn. The month of November is filled with exciting activities that will focus on fire safety, the body unit and Thanksgiv-ing. We will begin the month discussing fire safety and the important job of fire fighters. On November 5th we will be visiting the West Friendship Fire Station for an oppor-tunity to see the equipment that fire fighters use to keep us safe as well as learning how we can stay safe in school and at home.

This is a great time to make a family emergency plan in your home. We will then begin the body unit. During this unit we will learn that from our arms, our legs, our eyes mouth, ears and even our hair, we are all similar yet

Fall is here! Our 2 Day 2 friends have done a great job of settling into their class routines. We are so proud of how confidently they walk into our classroom. We will spend the first part of the month learning about fall colors and shapes. We will explore outside and talk about the changes that are happening around us, the changing colors of the leaves and the changing

weather. The second half of the month we will prepare for the big November holiday, Thanksgiving! We will talk about foods and turkeys. Then we will spend time discussing

our families and the things for which we are thankful. Also in November we will have ASQ conferences and PJ Day! The cooler tempera-

tures are here. If you haven't done so already, please update your child's extra clothing. Also, if you have any questions on dates or infor-mation, you can always check our classroom binder where you sign in everyday. Happy

fall!

Miss Andrea and Miss Karen would like to thank: Miss Terry and Miss Patsy for assisting them in the classroom. We would also like to thank Heeyoung Weddington (Vivianna's mom), Solomaz Spence (Cameron's mom), and Mary McKenzie (Cass' mom) for the yummy Birthday treats. Of course our Halloween Party would not have been a success without the help of those who brought in items for our celebration. Thank

A huge thank you to the Rahll family for providing our class pumpkins. Thank you T.J. and Jessica for also haul-ing in our fresh produce every week.

The pumpkin your child brought home recently came from our very own pumpkin patch on our playground. The mini pumpkins were provided by our MHNS Parent Group.

Thank you for our pumpkin patch!!

Harbin Farms was kind enough to bring us our hay bales used for the pumpkin patch. We used the bales to help hide our pump-kins and were able to use them for our scarecrows in our 4 day 4 and 5 day 4 class. www.harbinfarmsproduce.com/home.html

you to Jessica Wuenschell (Emaleigh's mom), Jen Giro (Charlie's mom), and Mary McKenzie (Cass' mom) for bringing in items for the party. Thank you to all of the parents and grandparents who helped with picture day and to those who came to the park with us. We would also like to welcome our new student, Nicholas Akinola to

our class!

Miss Sarah would like to thank: all of her students for bringing their parents and grandpar-ents on our park field trip. We were so lucky to have great weather on both days. Miss Sarah welcomed new student, Meena Ramprabhu, in

her Tuesday/Thursday class. Hi Meena!

Parents and teachers have filled out the ASQ forms and our conferences will give us a chance to compare notes to see how our children are devel-oping. Sign-up sheets will soon be on the wall outside our classroom door. The AM conferences will meet during the morning of November 16th and the PM con-ferences will meet during the afternoon of November 18th. Children WILL have classes on both days, but there will not be babysitting for siblings.

Thanksgiving is coming (along with review of the letter Tt). What a great time to encourage

sharing, caring, thankful-ness and cooperation! We will learn all about turkeys and the first Thanksgiving. We will also discuss what we are thankful for. And if

you don’t know how to cook a turkey, just ask our 4 year olds! We will share a “feast” with Miss Susan’s and Miss Janel’s class.

Thanksgiving break for our classes is Nov. 24th through Nov. 29th.

The last day of November finds us making gingerbread people and thinking about the holidays.

Miss Denise, Miss Barb and Miss Kimmy would like to thank: Erin Lal and Jessie Brady for helping review numbers; Cindy Lee for helping with our apple graph; Jessie Brady for helping us on picture day; Lexi and her family for donating wipes to our class; Cat Cunningham and Elena Evans for helping us make owls; Linda So and Elena Evans for being our Art helpers; Brij Lal and Suzy Shin-skie for carving pumpkins; and all the parents who came on the field trip to the park.

Miss Denise, Miss Barb and Miss Kimmy wish our wonderful MHNS families a HAPPY THANKSGIVING. We are so grateful for all of you!

Hello, November! Your cooler days and long-er nights have us thinking about winter com-

ing. As we start getting ready for winter, so do the animals. We will learn about migration and how some birds fly south but some stay here. We will make a bird feeder for the ones who decide to tough it out in the cold. Then we will

find out which animals hibernate during the winter. Don’t forget to bring a teddy bear on Nov. 4th. Would you like to hibernate all win-ter? Birds and bears will help us review the letter Bb.

Let’s go to the aquarium! Both classes will meet us at school in the morning on Wednes-day, Nov. 11th for a bus ride to the National Aquarium in Baltimore. We will make a Rain-bow Fish (book by Marcus Pfister) and a diorama and share our experiences of the fun we had on our trip. Letters Aa and Ff will be reviewed.

Fall is in full swing and the children have settled nicely into our classroom activities and made lots of new friends. We will begin November learning about fire safety, a fun

and important unit. We will be discussing stop, drop, and roll, 911, fire drills, smoke alarms, as well as the equip-ment the fire fighters wear and use to help

keep everyone safe. This is a good time to start/continue talking to your children at home about fire safety and have your own fire drills at your house. This is also a good time to start helping your child learn their phone number and address, beginning with the street name. We will visit the fire station in West Friendship (at the intersection of Rt. 99 and Rt. 32) on Thursday, Novem-ber 5th. Please send back your permission slips and check the top of the slip for exact details. This is a great opportunity for the children to interact with the fire fighters and see the equipment and trucks first hand. It reminds us that fire fighters are our friends and to continue our discussion about how

to be safe at home and school and learn more about the equipment the fire fighters use. Later in the month, we will have our All About Me unit and focus on how we use our head, hands, and feet, as well as how we are similar and different. The children will be asked to bring in something each day that they wear on their head, hands, and feet. Be creative! A reminder note will be sent home. At the end of No-vember, we will be talking about the Thanksgiving Holiday and share their thoughts on what they are thankful for. We will be making a special snack to share with the other 3s classes on November 24th. We are thankful for all of our wonderful 3 Day 3 students and their fami-lies. We wish every one a wonderful Thanksgiv-ing holiday! As the weather is getting colder, please remember to dress your child for outdoor play and

label all jackets, hats, mittens, etc.

Miss Sharon/Miss Molly would like to thank: all of the wonderful volunteers that helped in our classroom last month: Megan Drasin, (Catherine's mom) for helping us on Blue Day to create our wonderful puppets and delicious blue snack as well as on Art Day as we learned about Monet and paint-ed beautiful Monet style paintings; Sally Marshall, (Jesse's mom), for helping us make our orange play dough that we are having so much fun with; Karen Mattingly, (Sage's mom), for helping us "create" or-ange by mixing red and yellow so we could paint our orange pumpkins; Jen Black, (Brigston's mom), for helping us be artists on Art Day; Christy Garrish, (Marly's mom), for carving our great jack-o-lantern face; and Kate Ferguson, (Finley's mom), and Megan Drasin, (Catherine's mom), for help-ing us with all of our Halloween activities. A special thanks to everyone that went to the park with us. What a great day we had ex-ploring the outdoors and looking for signs of

Fall! We really appreciate your help!

Welcome to the month of November! We are thankful for so many things, especially experiencing all of the wonders of this beautiful season. We begin the month by learning how animals react to the cooler weather. We will learn about hibernation and migration as we study bears, birds and the letter Bb! We will also read some favorite stories by the well-known author, Robert McCloskey. Next we will learn about ocean life and aquari-um animals. We will discover the various shapes, sizes and colors of aquarium ani-mals. We will also describe their environ-ment as we create beautiful aquarium dioramas. Please look for our display of rainbow fish in the hallway! We will enjoy all that we have learned about ocean life

during our field trip to the aquarium on Wednesday, November 11th. Please also mark your calendars for Friday, November

20th. This will be the day for our confer-ences to review ASQ Ages and Stages Questionnaires. It will be a regular school day for the children. Please look for a con-

We will pre-pare food to share as we visit with Miss Denise’s and Miss Barb’s class for our own Thanksgiving feast. We will experi-ence lots of literature and math activities to help us explore the traditions of Thanksgiving and most especially, be-

ing thankful. We are looking forward to a month of learning and exploring the season

together.

Miss Susan and Miss Janel would like to thank: all of the families for their help in making our field trip to the park a huge success! We would like to thank Firefighter Jeff (Keira's dad) for coming in to teach us all about fire safety. We would also like to thank Laura Brogno (Milania's mom) for helping us make our delicious apple biscuits, Sara Phillips

Four Day Fours by Laurie Turner

November is a month of sharing, caring, and celebrating as we prepare for Thanksgiving. The month will start with introducing the letter Kk. We will read Katy No Pocket and make our own kangaroo then we’ll talk about kitchen tools and gadgets. Each child will have an opportunity to bring in a tool or gadget for show and tell. The next letter

to be introduced is Oo. We will talk about opposites then ocean life to prepare us for our field trip to the Aquarium on November 11th. The children will also get some “homework.” With your help they will research an ocean fact to share with

the class.

The next unit is Native Americans, Pilgrims and Thanksgiving. There will be discus-sions about the First Thanksgiving and how it is the same or different from a modern day Thanksgiving. It is a time for families to

gather together and we will share a feast (snack) with Miss Marielena’s class. Miss Val and I are very thankful for the

support of our MHNS families!

Miss Laurie/Miss Val would like to thank: Leisl Edwards

(Heidi’s mom) for helping the children create Blob Paintings,

Julianna Smith (Jackson’s mom) for making a new batch of

playdough, Connie Lam (Daren’s mom) for helping the chil-

dren make their pumpkin sequence crowns, Jennifer Porter

(James’ mom) for carving our class pumpkin, Melissa Oak

(Aiden’s mom) and Jessica Smith (Trevor’s mom) for assist-

The month of October in Enrichment has had something new every day. The kids enjoyed completing the unit on Apples. Next came a unit on Trees and Leaves. We identified and labeled the

parts of a tree and a leaf. We painted leaves using shaving cream. We even learned 2 new big words DECIDUOUS and EVERGREEN. Ask your child to tell you about the colors and shapes of leaves.

As we ended the month, we talk about our bodies and all that we can do with hands and feet. The kids made x-ray/skeleton hand prints, sock puppets and painted with their feet!

October ended with a quick review of fire safety rules and some fun Halloween experiments and crafts.

In November, we will talk about birds and their habitats. Maybe we can make our own birds nest! We will

also learn about visiting the library.

Happy Fall from Room 4! The 5 Day 4s will have a rollicking November

moving through the alphabet and the numbers. This month we will focus

on Letter "Kk", Letter "Oo” and the number 6. We will explore and have

fun with 10 frames and a walking number line. As a companion to our

"Kk" studies, we'll explore historic and mod-

ern "kitchens" by sharing kitchen gadgets

from home and making a visit to Historic

Hebron House. Next, we'll float in to our

"Under the Sea" unit, which culminates in

our ever-popular field trip to the National

Aquarium in Baltimore! Perhaps we'll see an

"octopus" to complement our "Oo" studies!

As we move toward Thanksgiving, we'll learn

all about Native Americans and Pilgrims. What was their community

like? What's a teepee? A longhouse? How did Native Americans write?

Be sure to ask your child all about it! November will be an important time

to meet exciting guests. Firefighter Jeff (Jeff Tay-

lor) will visit our classroom and teach us about fire

safety. Miss Rama, Anish’s mom, will share her

family’s customs during the holiday of Diwali, the

Festival of Lights. We will look forward to spend-

ing time with these special parents. Finally, we'll

be holding ASQ conferences on Tuesday, No-

vember 17th. Look for sign-up sheets posted

outside our door in the coming weeks. As we

focus with the children this month on Thanksgiving as a time for grati-

tude, we'd like to say a sincere "thank you" to

all our MHNS families. We are truly grateful

for your children, for your enthusiasm, and

for your support. Happy Thanksgiving!
