Berlioz Harold in Italy
Berlioz Reverie and Caprice for violin and orchestra
Beethoven Symphony No.7
Melbourne Symphony OrchestraSir Andrew Davis conductorJames Ehnes viola and violin
The heart of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 is the sublime Allegretto, a walking tune subject to transformations that must have seemed tremendously novel to the work’s first audience in 1813, but now seem dream-like in their perfection. Sir Andrew’s survey of Berlioz’s major works continues in the company of James Ehnes. As Gramophone magazine said of this magnificent musician: ‘You get the feeling every time he puts bow to string that something special will, quite naturally, just happen.’
Mahler Symphony No.2 Resurrection
Melbourne Symphony OrchestraSir Andrew Davis conductorErin Wall sopranoCatherine Wyn-Rogers mezzo-soprano Melbourne Symphony Orchestra Chorus
Mahler’s music is at once epic and intimate, exultant and despairing, the revelations of a humanist in search of faith. He described his Second Symphony as ‘the most important thing that I have done.’ The finale is radiant with the certainty of eternal life.
For these landmark concert events – the second part of Sir Andrew’s multi-season cycle of Mahler symphonies – the Orchestra’s Chief Conductor will be joined by the MSO Chorus and superb international soloists.

Tan Dun, one of the most important musicians of our time, returns to Melbourne to help the city celebrate Chinese New Year, in this special concert in which two of his major works share the program with classics from the Western tradition.
His concerto for Pipa was inspired by Chinas’ Ghost Opera tradition, where shamans communicate with spirits from the past and future and establish dialogues between nature and the human soul. In his Triple Resurrection, Dun celebrates the bicentenary of Wagner’s birth with a spectacular piece of orchestral drama.
Lu Siqing, on of China’s finest violinists, is soloist in Mendelssohn’s eternally popular violin concerto, and this program concludes with the powerfully y emotional music from Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet ballet score.
