EVENT REVIEW: SUITS AND SKIRTS

D I R E C T O R : K E V I N B U R N S

A W O R D F R O M K E V I N: “The Suits and Skirts Wine tour was a huge success to kick off the Management Student Association’s events itinerary. The students traveled and tasted the Okanagan Valley’s finest red and white wine blends. We toured Cedar Creek, Sparkling Hill, Volcanic Estate, and ended off the day at Mission Hill Winery. Thank you to the MSA who assisted in planning and making this day come together.” S T U D E N T R E V I E W S:

“Even though I didn't drink all that wine, I enjoyed being a tourist and visiting world

renowned vineyards as an international student.” -Sindhuja Krishna, 3rd year

“I had never been to any wineries in Kelowna before! It was an amazing chance to explore what else Kelowna has to offer. I definitely would attend this event again! It was an amazing experience and I'm so grateful that we have a student association that produce these great events!” -Lexi Scott, 3rd year

“Great wine with great people!” -Mark Rossi, 4th Year

“This year Kevin and I were very excited to bring back Suits & Skirts, and showcase the potential it has of becoming a staple social event in the academic year. The main purpose of networking, with close peers, is accentuated through creating memories in some of the Okanagan’s most iconic wineries.” -Robin Wenger, 4th year (VP Events)

CALGARY BUSINESS TRIP #CBT2015

HOW MANY STUDENTS ARE ABLE TO ATTEND THIS YEAR? “We are really excited to be able to take 50 students to Calgary with us this year.” WHAT ARE YOU MOST EXCITED ABOUT THE CTB THIS YEAR? “We are very excited to attend the Business Day Conference this year. It will provide the students with an opportunity to interact with the business professionals from different companies as well as make connections with the students at University of Calgary. We also have office tours booked for companies including Deloitte, Encana, PWC, BLC, and Critical Mass.” WHAT ARE SOME CHALLENGES YOU’VE FACED IN PLANNING THE TRIP THUS FAR? IS IT DIFFICULT PLANNING FROM A DIFFERENT CITY? “We have had a lot of help in obtaining quotes for hotels and buses and organizing the trip to University of Calgary Business Day Conference. We have faced some challenges getting companies to hold office tours due to logistical and security issues. This was something new we really wanted to add to the trip, so we were able to persevere and book tours with several companies” WHAT DO YOU FEEL WILL BE DIFFERENT ABOUT THE TRIP THIS YEAR? The trip this year will definitely be a lot more interactive in terms of networking with the business professionals as a result of the Business Day Conference, as well as allowing the students to explore more of Calgary.

FALL BUSINESS FASION

WHAT IS “BUSINESS CASUAL”?” “The new business casual is appropriate for both the office and after work drinks. It combines confidence and polish with sophistication and style.” WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVOURITE COLOURS FOR THE SEASON: “I really like forest green, burgundy, egg plant, cobalt blue, powder blue, pale pink, mustard yellow, camel, and emerald green. Pastels are a very popular this fall and they are a great way bring a color into your outfit without being too bright. I love mixing classic autumn shades with jewel tones with pastels. My favourite fall patterns this year are plaid, tartan, hounds tooth, and tweed.” WHAT ARE SOME ESSENTIAL PIECES FOR FALL BUSINESS FASHION? “I would say your outerwear is critical. Investing in a nice trench coat and a good pair of shoes and tying it together with the perfect lip color can make any outfit look sophisticated and classy. Having a well-fitted dark jean, a simple pair of boots (no big buckles or spikes), a great pair of nude or black heels, and a great silk blouse also business casual essentials! One trend I really like this year is men’s inspired outfits that are cut for women. This includes trousers, oxford style shoes and dress shirts, boyfriend blazers, and oversized watches.” WHATS THE BEST TIP TO MAKE COMBINE COZY FALL WEAR BUSINESS CASUAL?

1. Sweaters with collared shirts underneath 2. Dressing up a quilted puffer vest or a fur vest with a well

fitted flannel or blouse 3. Wearing lipstick and heels can make almost any outfit look

more professional. I love mauves, dark reds, and brown nudes for fall lip colours and nude or black for heels, especially with a slightly pointed toe!

WHAT ARE SOME MAJOR DO-NOT’S OF BUSINESS FASHION?

1. Do not wear really baggy things. If you are going for the over sized look, only pick one item (ie. boyfriend blazer)

2. Bottom wear matters! Avoid ripped jeans, sweatpants, and tight mini skirts.

3. Avoid sneakers and other casual shoes (it throws off the whole outfit)

Note: Forget the classic do-not rules of mixing brown and black and black and navy (they can look good together!!!) For more style tips from Alana Deham checkout her website

WHAT IS “BUSINESS CASUAL”? “Business casual is the sartorial grey zone between thanksgiving dinner at grandmas and a job interview at a bank. An easy way to think of it, is to take a business formal look (#Suitandtie) and replace one piece with a more casual variant or remove it all together. E.g. dress down the pants or blazer, or ditch the tie or blazer.” WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE BUSINESS CASUAL LOOK FOR FALL? “My favourite fall business casual look features layers, textures, weights, and autumnal inspired colours. Like tawny, auburn, olive, and neutral blends. On top: a patterned shirt, like a gingham or tattersall plaid, with earthy tones, a solid coloured, knit tie to compliment, and a smart wool cable knit sweat over top. On the bottom: Heather woven trousers in charcoal or grey, and finish things off with a sturdy wingtip boot in golden brown.” WHAT ARE SOME ESSENTIAL PIECES FOR FALL BUSINESS FASHION? “On top: Textured and weighted ties! Fall is the perfect time for a tweed herringbone tie, or knit tie to add some depth to your look. On the bottom: Boots aren’t just for lumberjacks and fishermen these days. Pickup some wingtip, brogue perforated boots or some Chelsea boots to work into your business look to pay homage to the dipping temperatures.” WHAT ARE SOME MAJOR DO-NOTS OF BUSINESS FASHION? “Poor business fashion is often a combination of many little errors amalgamating into train wreck of an outfit on presentation day.

1. Ditch the backpack. Pick up a briefcase. Any briefcase. Just no backpacks. Some of my favourite and most durable briefcases have been from Value Village.

2. Too short and too long of ties. Tie point meets your belt buckle. Always.

3. Picking the wrong tie knot. Unless you’re Louis Litt, that double Windsor knot is probably not the look you’re going for. Stick with a four-in-hand (asymmetrical), half windsor (asymmetrical), or Onassis knot (Symmetrical).

4. Poor Fit. Even the most expensive outfit will make you look like a 9 year old in dad’s suit if it doesn’t fit properly. Consider tailoring costs part of the total suit cost. Many big commercial stores like Moores or Tiptop tailors offer affordable rates.

5. Ugly shoes. Don’t let the rest of the outfit down with a poor shoe game. Pick up a brown or black oxford dress shoe with a round toe and you’re set.”
