This unit contains 2 parts, and selections in both parts contribute to the unit theme by examining how a variety of characters are affected by great changes in their lives. Selections in Part 1 (The Price of Progress)

emphasize the effects of technological progress on characters in a number of settings.

Selections in Part 2 (Cultural Crossroads) emphasize the changes in individuals and their relationships that are caused by cultural differences.
