What Is Applied Natural Resource Economics?Applied natural resource economics is the study of the economic and business aspects of natural resource management and use. Graduates acquire skills in economics, finance, and statistics that meet the particular needs of natural resource industries. National and local governments, corporations, banks and financial companies, and consulting firms use natural resource economics to evaluate issues and problems related to natural and environmental resource management. The skills learned in the program are valued in industries such as energy and mineral production, resource-based manufacturing, construction, and others.

ResearchFaculty and graduate students in the MS in Applied Natural Resource Economics program research the economic, financial, and policy issues of natural resource use. All students must complete a research thesis. Projects are based on theoretical models developed from economic and financial theory and use empirical methods from mathematics and statistics.

Some recent topics include coal mine safety in China, commodity pricing, the copper market, and land use changes associated with urbanization.

• Mineral economics studies are a traditional strength of the School.

• Faculty members have given short courses in China, Mongolia, and South Africa.

• Students from twenty different nations have enrolled in the program.

FacilitiesThe School of Business and Economics provides a wide array of computing resources for both faculty and students. The School operates one main computer lab and several smaller labs, including a computer-lab/work-area reserved for graduate students. Several key financial and economic databases are available for researchers. In addition, the SBE has a state-of-the-art computerized classroom for computer-intensive instruction. Michigan Tech also has a recently modernized library.

• Faculty members were founding members and officers of the Mineral Economics and Management Society.

• Faculty members have testified in important natural resource damage assessment litigation cases, taught overseas as Fulbright lecturers, and served on the editorial board of the journal Resources Policy and on the Natural Research Council’s Committee of Earth Resources.
