LETTER FROM THE CHAPTER PRESIDENT Dear friends,

Spring is the season of renewal and after more than 20 years at the chapter, I remain committed, hopeful and very optimistic on our quest to ultimately find a cure for multiple sclerosis.

Every day the National MS Society works tirelessly with one urgent goal in mind: to help people affected by MS live their best lives as we stop MS in its tracks, restore what has been lost and end MS forever. Together we are stronger! All of us in the MS movement come together – sharing experiences and knowledge and contributing all that we can.

For so many of us a highlight of this season is Walk MS which connects people living with MS and those that care about them. It is a community event for our movement that says together, we are a powerful force as we team up with friends, loved ones, neighbors and co-workers to change the world for everyone affected by MS. Whether you’re walking in New York City, Staten Island, Westchester, Putnam, Rock-land or Orange counties, together we are stronger.

I know that by continuing to work together and walk together we will see a day when we never have to hear the words, “I have MS.”

Sincerely,

Robin Einbinder President

H IGH KICKING MS For former Radio City Rockette, Michelle Tolson, multiple sclerosis has meant everything except stop.

Diagnosed two years ago, Michelle says, “I’m celebrating living with something you never think about getting. Mul-tiple sclerosis changes your whole view of life.”

A Rockette from 1997-2002, Michelle, a professional danc-er for 26 years, sent MS a high kick when she performed with the Rockette alumnae in October 2014 at City Center.

She said when she turned 41-years old in September 2014 and had her first infusion treatment; she decided to use Facebook to go public about having the disease.

“I could not believe the outpouring of love so I post every time I’m at the infusion center so people can follow my journey,” she says.

Currently Director of Communications for The American Heart Association in NYC, dance teacher and dance competition judge, Michelle is captain of her Walk MS team, Team Tolson.

Michelle is also part of the "Why I Walk" program supported by our local presenting sponsor SanofiGenzyme.

Her advice to the newly diagnosed is, “Learn all you can… stay active and busy.”

“Don’t stop what you’re doing if you don’t have to,” she says. “MS shouldn’t change your life. It’s just another part of your life; it’s just another dimension to my personality now.”

VOLUNTEER CORNERJesus Calderon, 23, was diagnosed with MS at the age of 15. He said he “did not realize how much of an impact MS was going to have” on his life.

“Many people ask me how I can be so positive given my situation,” he said. “My response is that I am fortunate to be surrounded by people that make me feel lucky to be alive despite what life has thrown my way.”

Currently an undergraduate student studying communications in hopes of becoming a motivational speaker, Jesus has volunteered and participated in several of the chapter events and programs.

Once a month, he attends the chapter’s 20s and 30s program which is where he first learned about the chapter’s Ambassador Program. “I met someone, who has become a good friend, who is a chapter ambassador,” he said. “She said it was great and that I should do it, so I got in touch with Mike and signed up for the training.”

Jesus completed his ambassador training in May. He said, “The greatest reward I can have is in knowing that I made a positive im-pact on someone and in helping them to feel understood.”

For more information about becoming a chapter ambassador, or other volunteer opportunities, email [email protected], or call 212-453-3258.

RESEARCH

NEW STUDY SUGGESTS PEOPLE WITH MS AT INCREASED RISK FOR PSYCHIATRIC DISORDERSA large-scale study from Canada suggests that people with MS have increased rates of anxi-ety, bipolar disorder, depression, and schizo-phrenia compared to people without MS.

The research team identified 44,452 persons with MS and 220,849 controls without the disease in administrative medical data from four Canadian provinces. They examined medical records to determine the incidence (new cases) and preva-lence (all existing cases) of depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia from 1995 to 2005 among these groups.

Among people with MS, women were more likely than men to develop depression, anxiety disorder, and bipolar disorder, while men were more likely than women to develop schizophre-nia. Although women with MS were more likely to develop depression than men, men developed depression at a much higher rate compared to men without MS.

The National MS Society is focusing a light on psychosocial issues and emotional health in MS as part of its commitment to drive research and programs in wellness.READ THE COMPLETE REPORT IN NEUROLOGY (2015; 85: 1-8)

YOUR CREDIT SCORE MATTERSDOUG OSTROV, NEW YORK LEGAL ASSISTANCE GROUPAccording to a recent report from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, more than 52% of accounts in collection are medical bills. If an unpaid medical bill makes its way to your credit report, your credit rating could suffer for years: increasing the interest rates and premiums you will pay on loans, and in some states be used to vet your job application, and influence your insurance premiums.

There are some simple steps you can take to protect yourself and your credit score: always get proof of every bill you pay especially medical bills. Otherwise a small unpaid bill that you think you paid but was perhaps never processed, or processed incorrectly can end up haunting you and your credit score. If your medical expenses have already put you in financial crisis, digging yourself out can seem like an insurmountable task. But it can be done. Seek the advice of a certified financial counselor, who can help you work to eventually correct a mistake, rebuild your score, and stabilize your credit. It just takes time.

WELLNESS

THE POWER OF CONNECTIONWhen people attend their first MS self-help group, it may evoke an array of emotions. Some people might feel relief in a community that understands MS, while others might feel sad in confronting life with a chronic illness, and may feel even more isolated. While such feelings are normal and should be acknowledged, persever-ing to make even one connection can help peo-ple learn more about how to live with MS and share experiences.

For Linda and Mary, who separately attended their first self-help group meeting in the 1990s, their feelings of isolation remained. One day, both Linda and Mary attended an educational program. “Mary mentioned something about it being hard to make friends,” Linda said. “I understood what she was going through. So I decided we should be friends.” They exchanged email addresses and it wasn’t long before they formed a life-long bond. During one of their exchanges, they decided to start their own MS self-help group which has existed for more than five years.

“We will discuss some MS-related things, and we’ll focus on it when it’s necessary, but our group is more about enjoying life together,” says Linda. “Linda is one of the funniest people I’ve ever met. But really it’s just nice to be able to say to somebody, ‘I’m too tired to do this’ and not have to make an excuse,” says Mary. “When you’re with people who have MS, and you’re walking very slowly, the people you’re with walk slowly, too. They don’t leave you 20 feet behind. People don’t remember how impor-tant that is, to walk together. It’s the understand-ing that makes it easier.”

There are many opportunities to create meaningful connections with other people who understand MS. To find out what is available in your area, call 1-800-344-4867, option 1, or visit www.MSconnection.org, the Society’s online community to connect with others. If you are interested in starting a self-help group, contact Moyra Rondon at [email protected].
