I am so excited you have chosen to be a part of the AVID family! AVID is an acronym that stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination. This is a college preparatory course, designed to help students learn strategies to succeed in rigorous courses, gain confidence, teach organization, and help address any confusion or difficulty in core content classes through tutorials with guidance and support. Here is what you can expect this year in the 6 th grade AVID course: Binder Checks Tutorials Field Trips to Knott’s and Disneyland University Visits Family Fun Nights Introduction to WICOR strategies (Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, Reading) Leadership opportunities Now that you have been selected to participate in the AVID elective program, you will be viewed as a role model, an exceptional student, and leader to all your peers! We know you are ready for this responsibility because after all, you ARE an avid student. Course Description ü One 2-3 inch binder for ALL classes ü Pencils- lots of pencils! ü Pens- blue, black, and red ü Highlighters ü Loose-leaf college ruled paper Scissors ü Glue stick or glue bottle ü Ruler ü Expo marker ü Pouch for all supplies ü Dividers for each class ü Please try not to purchase the accordion binder! All paper needs to be secured in the rings of the binder! ü Agenda (provided by CLMS) Daily Supplies Did you know that the word AVID is not only an acronym that stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination, but that the word also is an adjective meaning to show great enthusiasm for or interest in? Synonyms: enthusiastic, ardent, keen; devoted, dedicated; zealous. That is exactly who you are! Welcome to AVID! J I encourage you to download or add to your favorites the following apps that we will be using frequently in middle and high school. Technology access at home is not required, however it can make homework easier for all other classes. Detailed info regarding some these apps & websites are on my website. The apps are: Office 365, Google Docs, Jupiter Grades, Weebly (for your blogs), Dictionary.com, Vocabulary.com, Edpuzzle.com, and Remind. Technology Use No supplies at home? Supplies required to complete any assignment will always be available to take home! All you have to do is ask!
