Supervisors:Dr.MikeJones&Dr.CorrinaCoryProject:BiomechanicalAssessmentofRibFracturesinChildrenwithSuspectedAbuseTheaimofthestudywastoconductabiomechanicalevaluationofribfracturesinchildren,byapplicationof engineeringprinciples.A literaturebased surveyof thoracic injury toleranceof thehumanthorax andtheoretic biomechanical analysis of mechanismsof injury and forces acting on the thorax to producedifferentpatternsof rib fractures in childrenwere studied. Our results showed that ribfracturesof theposteriorarcarethecommonestpatternnoticedinchildrenwithsuspectedabuse.Theyresultfromforcesproducedbecauseof shakingandantero‐posteriorcompressionofthethorax. This leadstoleveringof therib over the transverse process resulting in a fracture. These fractures are usually missed on plainradiography and requireahigh index of suspicionfor diagnosis.Cardiopulmonary resuscitation doesnotleadtoproductionofribfracturesinchildren,as theposteriorribarcis notabletoleveroverthetransverseprocesstoproducesuchafracture.
