Guest of Honour:Guest of Honour:

I commend the Singapore Khalsa Association (SKA) for the efforts taken to reach out to the wider Singaporean community through their annual Vesakhi Mela. The event features an exciting programme of sports and diverse cultural activities that

not only transcend racial and religious boundaries, but also encourage tolerance and understanding.

The participation of the various community groups, including those not native to Singapore, in the Vesakhi Mela is a testament to SKA and the Sikh community’s efforts in contributing to social cohesion in Singapore.

I wish everyone an enjoyable and memorable Vesakhi Mela 2013, as well as continued success to SKA and the communities it serves.

Bhangra is perhaps the most virile form of Indian Folk Dance. It abundantly reflects the vigor, the vitality, the heaven of exuberance, and the hilarity permeated among the rural folk by the promise of a good harvest.

The dancers move in a circle around the drummer, who sometimes lifts the two sticks as he beats the drum to beckon the dancers to a higher tempo of movement. They start with slow movements. As the tempo increases, the hands, feet and in fact the whole body comes into action.

Gidha is the favourite and most popular dance of the ladies and young girls in Punjab. The dance is performed at all happy occasions.

The ladies stand in a circle and one of the girls sings a Boli (short lyric). Towards the end of the song, which forms the chorus, she sings at a faster pace. Then the other ladies join in the singing of the chorus. At the same time, two or more ladies perform a graceful dance in the enclosure formed by the circle. During the singing all the ladies clap to the rhythm of the song.

Both Bhangra & Gidha are performed to couplets call Bolis and they make reference to the seasons, relationships, dress, patriotism, love, harvest, the flora etc.

Religious - It was on this day in 1699 that Guru Gobind Singh - the tenth Guru of the Sikhs, established the Khalsa Panth (the Commonwealth of the Pure) by administering “Amrit” (baptismal nectar). From this day onwards all Sikh males were given the surname "Singh" (Lion) and all Sikh females the surname Kaur (Princess) and ordered to keep the 5 Ks (articles of faith) unshorned hair (kesh), comb (kangha), pair of breeches (kashera) steel bracelets (kara), sword (kirpan). Religious ceremonies are held at the Gurdwaras (Sikh temples) where the Sri Guru Granth Sahib (Sikh Holy Book) is read continously over 48 hours. Langgar (free food) is served to all devotees who eat together.

Cultural - The farmers experience great joy in seeing their golden fields of wheat (the Sikh's staple food). It is towards the end of spring and the trees and plants are green and colourful. Being a joyous month, melas (fairs) are organized with bhangra and gidha being the main attractions.

Vesakhi is perhaps the most important occasion for the Sikh community.
