The ‘Mozarabs’ were Christians who lived in southern Spain under

Muslim rule. Some scholars connect the Mozarabic church to the Celtic

church. The prayers of the Mozarabic Rite do show a similarity to Celtic

prayers with their plays on words and repetitions or parallel thoughts.

The prayers presented here are all taken from the 1881 book Mozarabic

Collects edited by Charles Hale. The ‘Elizabethan’ or traditional

liturgical English used at the time can be a great barrier for the modern

reader, both in understanding the meaning of the prayers, and in seeing

the beauty of the content.

My goal in updating the language is both academic—to show the true

content of the prayers for the value of understanding the history of the

Mozarabic church—and practical, to make these prayers usable in

today’s worship settings.

All of the prayers from Hale’s work are included along with some short

orders of worship for morning and evening prayer. The names and

numbering of the Sundays follows the old system in order to be

analogous to the original work by Hale. I also added numbers after each

prayer. This is done for easy identification, and with the hopes that in the

future a chart can be arranged so the prayers may be used in a topical

agreement with modern lectionaries.

For more information on the Mozarabic church, I will simply provide a

link to Mozarabic Collects in Google Books rather than repeat the

information here.

THE COLLECTS FOR THE SEASONS OF THE

CHRISTIAN YEAR

ADVENT TO CHRISTMAS

O God,

you were pleased to announce the coming of your Son,

our Lord Jesus Christ,

with choirs of angels who proclaimed with their song,

“Glory to God in the highest, and peace to his people on earth.”

Grant that we may so pass our time here to your glory,

that at your Son’s second coming

we may rejoice before him.

Amen. [1]

CHRISTMAS TO SEPTUAGESIMA

O blessed Savior

as the prophets foretold,

you were born of a virgin,

and you came to be

a Treasure to the poor,

a Light to those who walk in darkness,

the Strength of the weak,

the Health of the sick,

and the Resurrection of the dead;

Grant that through your glorious nativity

we may be loosed from the bonds of our sins,

and may always rejoice in your praise.

Amen. [2]

LENT

O Lord,

let everyone hear you,

let the rich and the poor bow down their hearts to you.

May our souls seek you alone.

May we praise you, with all your saints in eternal joy,

and find you our exceedingly great reward.

Amen. [3]

Page 6: Mozarabic Collects Adapted for Modern Use Paul C. Stratman ...

EASTER THROUGH EASTER 5

O Christ our God,

we give you glory.

as you died for our sins

and rose from the dead on the third day,

so may the dead in glory,

freed from sin through you,

find perpetual joy in you. Amen. [4]

ASCENSION TO PENTECOST

O Lord, our Savior,

you ascended on high in glory,

in the sight of your disciples.

Lift our hearts and minds above the things of earth,

that we may not be ashamed before you

when you come to be our judge.

Amen. [5]

PENTECOST AND TRINITY SUNDAY

O God the Holy Spirit,

with the Father and the Son together

you are worshiped and glorified.

Teach us to know the truth,

and to always rejoice in the truth.

Amen. [6]

TRINITY 1 THROUGH TRINITY LAST

O Lord,

to you is given all authority in heaven and earth.

To you the Church on earth sings its praise.

Grant, almighty God,

that as we declare your praise,

you also would listen to our prayers.

Amen. [7]

Page 7: Mozarabic Collects Adapted for Modern Use Paul C. Stratman ...

SAINTS’ DAYS

O God, you gave your blessed saints

grace and faith to despise the world

and to follow you.

Mercifully hear our prayers,

Put to death in us all desires for what is evil,

that our hearts may ever glow with love for you.

Amen. [8]

THE COLLECTS FOR THE SUNDAYS AND OTHER

HOLY DAYS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR

THE FIRST SUNDAY IN ADVENT

O Lord Jesus Christ,

at your first coming you humbled yourself because of our sins.

At your second coming our sins will be done away by your mercy,

and we will be numbered with your saints in glory everlasting;

through your merits, O blessed Savior,

with the Father and the Holy Spirit

you live and reign,

one God,

now and forever.

Amen. [9]

THE SECOND SUNDAY IN ADVENT

O God,

by your holy prophets

you promised that your only Son

would come in the flesh for us

and be born of a virgin.

In these last days you have fulfilled your Word.

When he who came to redeem the world

comes to be our judge,

let us not be put to shame;

through the merits of your Son,

Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen. [10]

Page 8: Mozarabic Collects Adapted for Modern Use Paul C. Stratman ...

THE THIRD SUNDAY IN ADVENT

Heavenly Father,

you sent your messengers

to tell of the birth of your Son,

that people might believe in him.

Open our ears to hear your call,

to repent of our sins,

and to seek our heavenly inheritance.

May we profess Christ until we stand by his grace

before the glory of your majesty;

Grant this for the sake of your Son,

Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen. [11]

THE FOURTH SUNDAY IN ADVENT

O Lord,

raise up your power and come to deliver us,

that we who are oppressed by temptations

may be defended by your power,

that the hosts of the enemy may never prevail against us.

Hear us in your mercy, O Lord Christ,

who with the Father and the Holy Spirit

lives and reigns,

one God,

now and forever.

Amen. [12]

CHRISTMAS DAY

O Lord Jesus Christ,

true God from true God,

you became a little child for us so the world you made would be saved.

Just as a child is born to us and a Son is given to us,

may we be born again through you

and always remain in the number

of God’s faithful children;

through your merits, O blessed Savior,

with the Father and the Holy Spirit

you live and reign,

one God,

now and forever.

Amen. [13]

Page 9: Mozarabic Collects Adapted for Modern Use Paul C. Stratman ...

THE SUNDAY AFTER CHRISTMAS

O God, Son of God,

your name endures forever,

and yet you took on yourself our nature to redeem the world.

Grant that we who are glad at your first coming

may rejoice in your full salvation when you come to be our judge;

through your mercy, O our God,

you are blessed,

and live and govern all things,

now and forever.

Amen. [14]

NEW YEAR’S EVE

O God,

your days are without beginning and without end.

We dedicate this coming year to you.

Give us such prosperity as you know is good for us,

and make us abound in doing whatever is pleasing to you;

through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen. [16]

NEW YEAR’S DAY (CIRCUMCISION/NAME OF JESUS)

O Jesus, our Savior and our Lord,

by the proclamation of your grace,

you took the yoke of the law from our necks,

and removed the burden from our shoulders to your own;

Hear the prayers of your Church,

that we may joyfully serve you here,

and see your glorious presence in all its joy in the life to come;

through your mercy, O our God,

you are blessed,

and live and govern all things,

now and forever.

Amen. [15]

THE EPIPHANY OF OUR LORD

O Jesus Christ our King,

your sign to the Magi was a bright shining star.

Enlighten us by your grace,

and fill us with all wisdom and spiritual understanding;

grant this because of your goodness,

Jesus Christ our Lord,

whose kingdom and dominion

endure through all ages.

Amen. [17]

THE FIRST SUNDAY AFTER THE EPIPHANY, THE

BAPTISM OF OUR LORD

O Lord Jesus Christ,

in order to fulfill all righteousness,

you were baptized by John in the Jordan.

Clothe us with this same righteousness,

that as your baptized people,

we, too, may be called beloved children of your Father,

and because of you, know he is well pleased with us;

through your mercy, O our God,

you are blessed,

and live and govern all things,

now and forever.

Amen. [17A]1

THE FIRST SUNDAY AFTER THE EPIPHANY

O Lord God,

you always hear those who cry to you,

and you show your tender mercy to those who are distressed.

Help us to despise the emptiness of this world,

renounce its deceits,

and find in Christ our eternal and exceedingly great reward;

Grant this, for the sake of your blessed Son, our Savior.

Amen. [18]

THE SECOND SUNDAY AFTER THE EPIPHANY

O almighty God,

you raised up your blessed Son in righteousness,

and revealed him in the flesh;

Grant that we may always follow him both in word and deed,

so that, listening to him with our hearts,

we may be partakers of his glory;

through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen. [19]

THE THIRD SUNDAY AFTER THE EPIPHANY

O God the Father Almighty,

listen to our prayers,

and give us the fullness of love and peace.

May we always put our faith in your mercy,

and always live in hope and love;

through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen. [20]

THE FOURTH SUNDAY AFTER THE EPIPHANY

O Lord our Strength,

increase in us a true love of your holy name,

that we trust in your grace,

fear no earthly evil,

set our hearts on no earthly good,

and finally rejoice in your full salvation;

through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen. [21]

THE FIFTH SUNDAY AFTER THE EPIPHANY

Only Son of God the Father,

you took on yourself our nature to save the world,

and by humbling yourself

you opened the way to Paradise again to fallen humanity;

Wash away our iniquities, cleanse us from our sins,

that we may be imitate you as dearly loved children;

through your mercy,

O our God, you are blessed,

and live and govern all things,

now and forever.

Amen. [22]

12

THE SIXTH SUNDAY AFTER THE EPIPHANY

O God,

author of peace,

may we be so held in the bonds of love,

that those who are peaceful may remain in peace,

and that those who differ may be reconciled by your mercy;

through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord.

Amen. [23]

THE TRANSFIGURAITON OF OUR LORD

Jesus Christ,

beloved Son of your Father,

you shone like the sun on the holy mountain

in the presence of Moses, Elijah and your disciples.

May we also behold your glory

when we listen to you as the Father commanded;

through your mercy, O our God,

you are blessed,

and live and govern all things,

now and forever.

Amen. [23A] 2

SEPTUAGESIMA

O God, good and gracious,

you have great mercy toward all who call on you.

Listen to our cry,

and in your mercy, take away our offences,

through Jesus Christ our Lord.

SEXAGESIMA

O God,

you so loved the world

that you gave your only Son

to reconcile the earthly with the heavenly;

Move us to love you above all things,

that we love our friends in you,

and our enemies for you;

through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen. [25]

QUINQUAGESIMA

O God of all mercies,

O Lord of all might;

Give us an abundance of your goodness,

remove our feet from evil,

and enable us to walk in the path which leads to you;

through Jesus Christ, your Son our Lord.

Amen. [26]

ASH WEDNESDAY

O God,

you do not desire the death of sinners,

but you want them to turn to you and live.

Look with pity on the weakness of our mortal nature.

We confess that we are but ashes,

and for our wickedness we deserve to return to the dust.

Forgive all our sins,

and give us the blessings that come with true repentance;

through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen. [27]

Almighty and eternal God,

you have mercy on all people,

you despise nothing you have made,

and you forgive the sins of all those who repent.

As we humble ourselves in dust and ashes before you,

give us your perfect remission and forgiveness,

for the glory of your name;

through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen. [28]

THE FIRST SUNDAY IN LENT

O Christ, Son of God,

for our sake you fasted forty days and allowed yourself to be tempted.

Protect us so that we may not be led astray by any temptation.

Since man does not live by bread alone,

nourish our souls with the heavenly food of your Word;

through your mercy, O our God,

you are blessed,

and live and govern all things,

now and forever.

Amen. [29]

THE SECOND SUNDAY IN LENT

O Jesus, Son of God the Father,

Fount of Life everlasting,

give your living water to us who thirst,

we worship and glorify you,

one God,

now and forever.

Amen. [30]

THE THIRD SUNDAY IN LENT

O Lord Jesus Christ,

by your almighty power

you opened the eyes of the blind,

you are blessed,

and live and govern all things,

now and forever.

Amen. [31]

one God,

now and forever.

Amen. [32]

THE FIFTH SUNDAY IN LENT

O holy Jesus, most loving Savior,

you called out to Lazarus

and made him come out of his tomb.

and serve you in newness of life;

through your mercy, O our God,

you are blessed,

and live and govern all things,

now and forever.

Amen. [33]

PALM SUNDAY

O Lord Jesus Christ,

when you entered Jerusalem,

great crowds waved palm branches and cried “Hosanna.”

you are blessed,

and live and govern all things,

now and forever.

HOLY WEEK

O God, Son of God,

you took on yourself our nature

and suffered death on the cross for us.

By your Passion you have set us free from eternal death.

Preserve us in your grace;

through your mercy, O our God,

you are blessed,

and live and govern all things,

now and forever.

Amen. [35]

MAUNDY/HOLY THURSDAY

O Christ, Lamb of God,

at that Passover meal,

you offered your own body and blood,

and so you revealed yourself as the true Passover lamb.

As we receive the gifts you offer,

may your blood spare us from eternal death,

that we may enjoy fellowship and freedom with you forever.

You are blessed,

and live and govern all things,

now and forever.

Amen.3 [35A]

GOOD FRIDAY

O God, Son of God,

you suffered for us,

the righteous for the unrighteous.

Save us by the shame of your Passion,

and clothe us with the robe of your righteousness.

Through the suffering and death you did not deserve,

we have escaped the punishment our sins have deserved.

Amen. [36]

O Lord,

hear the sorrowful sighing of your church,

for whom you suffered death on the cross.

Let us, whose sole trust is in what you endured for us,

never be put to shame,

be our support in all trials,

and crown us at last with glory everlasting.

Amen. [37]

EASTER EVE

O Lord Jesus Christ,

for our sins you endured the cross and the grave,

and on the third day you rose again from the tomb.

Just as you have cleansed us from our sin by your blood,

and as we are buried with you in baptism,

so by your grace, let us share in your resurrection;

through your mercy,

O our God, you are blessed,

and live and govern all things,

now and forever.

Amen. [38]

EASTER DAY

O Lord Jesus Christ,

you died for the sins of the whole world,

and on this day you rose from the dead.

By your Resurrection put the sin within us to death.

As you destroyed the power of death by your cross and passion,

share with us your blessed life;

through your merits, O blessed Savior,

you live and govern all things,

now and forever.

Amen. [43]

THE FIFTH SUNDAY AFTER EASTER

O Lord, save us who hope in you,

you are blessed, and live and govern all things,

now and forever.

Amen. [44]

ROGATION DAYS

O Lord our God,

you are generous in your goodness

to all who confess their sins to you.

ASCENSION DAY

O Lord, King of glory,

when you fulfilled all that the prophets had spoken about you,

you ascended to your Father’s throne,

and opened the kingdom of heaven to all believers.

While you reign in heaven,

do not let us be weighed down by earthly things,

but keep our hearts looking upward

where our Redeemer has gone before;

through your mercy, O our God,

you are blessed,

and live and govern all things,

now and forever.

Amen. [46]

THE SUNDAY AFTER ASCENSION DAY

O Lord, strong and mighty, Lord of hosts, and King of glory;

cleanse our hearts from sin,

FOR OTHERS IN AFFLICTION

O God, you do not despise the sighing of a contrite heart, nor the desire

of those who are sorrowful. Mercifully accept our prayers which we

make for your servants now suffering adversity, and grant that those evils

which either the devil or man works against them may be brought to

nothing, and by your good providence may be dispersed, that so,

delivered from harm by your mercy, they may evermore give thanks to

you in your Holy Church; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. [104]

CANTICLES

BENEDICTUS ES 29 Blessed are you, O Lord, God of our ancestors,

and to be praised and highly exalted forever; 30 and blessed is your glorious, holy name,

and to be highly praised and highly exalted forever; 31 blessed are you in the shrine of your holy glory,

and to be extolled and highly glorified forever. 32 Blessed are you, who sits upon cherubim and looks upon the deeps,

and to be praised and highly exalted forever. 33 Blessed are you upon the throne of your kingdom

and to be extolled and highly glorified forever. 34 Blessed are you in the firmament of heaven,

and to be sung and glorified forever.

(Text from The Prayer of Azaraiah and the Song of the Three Holy

Children, Apocrypha, ESV, Concordia edition.)

BENEDICTUS

68 “Blessed be the Lord God of Israel,

for he has visited and redeemed his people 69 and has raised up a horn of salvation for us

in the house of his servant David, 70 as he spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets from of old, 71 that we should be saved from our enemies

and from the hand of all who hate us; 72 to show the mercy promised to our fathers

and to remember his holy covenant, 73 the oath that he swore to our father Abraham, to grant us 74 that we, being delivered from the hand of our enemies,

might serve him without fear, 75 in holiness and righteousness before him all our days. 76 And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High;

for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways, 77 to give knowledge of salvation to his people

in the forgiveness of their sins, 78 because of the tender mercy of our God,

whereby the sunrise shall visit us from on high 79 to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death,

to guide our feet into the way of peace.” (Luke 1:68-79 ESV)

MAGNIFICAT

“My soul magnifies the Lord, 47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, 48 for he has looked on the humble estate of his servant.

For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed; 49 for he who is mighty has done great things for me,

and holy is his name. 50 And his mercy is for those who fear him

from generation to generation. 51 He has shown strength with his arm;

he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts; 52 he has brought down the mighty from their thrones

and exalted those of humble estate; 53 he has filled the hungry with good things,

and the rich he has sent away empty. 54 He has helped his servant Israel,

in remembrance of his mercy, 55 as he spoke to our fathers,

to Abraham and to his offspring forever.” (Luke 1:46-55 ESV)

NUNC DIMITTIS 29 “Lord, now you are letting your servant depart in peace,

according to your word; 30 for my eyes have seen your salvation 31 that you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, 32 a light for revelation to the Gentiles,

and for glory to your people Israel.” (Luke 2:29-32 ESV)
