SAFECO COLLECTS: NORTHWEST ART /976-/997

"SAFECO's collection hasbecome an important part of thecorporate culture," saysChairman and CEO RogerEigsti. "While it enriches thework environment, it's also asalute to the creative energy ofour employees, and representsthe value we place on thatenergy, not only within our workforce but in our surrounding

. . "commuruties, too.

When SAFECO moved to itsnew corporate headquarters in1973, it had senior executiveswith a devotion to cultural andcommunity activities, and artwas seen as a good way toenhance offices and commonareas. The company alsowanted to build an importantcollection of Northwest art, thereby creating a resourcelinked to a larger world. Thebroad development of today'sacclaimed collection and thisexhibition affirm the wisdomand faith expressed by thoseearly visionaries.

\X/ith more than 2,000 piecesscattered throughout the UnitedStates, it was a formidable

challenge to choose only a fewdozen pieces to be shown in thissensitively designed space.Sallie-Jo Wall is responsible forthe discriminating choices andsubtle design for this installationwhich allows the art to be seento its best advantage. Herunderstanding of the collection, attention to innumerable detailsand awareness of contemporaryart issues have been crucial tothe success of this endeavor.

Because this is SAFE CO's firstexhibition beyond the corporatesetting, we owe thanks forpatience and cooperation fromthe Jundt Art Museum staff, particularly Scott Patnode andMidge Collins. And, finally, thisis a tribute to the artists of thePacific Northwest who bring usvisual excellence and curiousinsights into the humancondition. We salute and thankthem for stimulating innovationand creative energy.
