ST LUCY’S BOOK WEEK ACTIVITIES

This year, Book Week commences on the 17th August through to

the 23rd August, 2019. The Theme is ‘Reading is my Secret Power’. So

let’s embrace our children’s ‘Secret Power’ by joining in our St Lucy’s

Reading Challenge, starting Thursday, 1st August, 2019, remembering

that all our children are invited to enter! Your child just needs to be

immersed in a story which could mean reading, listening, watching,

and/or looking. Each child who participates will receive a ‘Certificate of

Achievement,’ and the top 10 readers will receive a book, with a name

plate, to celebrate their achievement. All entries should be sent back

to me by Monday 19th August for collation. You are invited to take as

many reading logs as you would like.

We have a few activities planned i.e. a photograph of each child as a

Superhero, activities involving children creating their own books marks

and our usual Morning Song stories throughout the week.

We will also be having our Annual Book Week ‘Dress up Parade’ on Friday 23rd August, 2019, straight after

Assembly. The children will

parade around the playground

in their character costumes and

we will have one prize for ‘Most

Outstanding Costume,” which will

be presented in Afternoon Song.

We hope everyone gets involved and enjoys our special Book Week

this year.

Term 3 began with creative and artistic opportunities for our students to celebrate NAIDOC Week.

Our Weaving Project on Tuesday 23rd was enjoyed by all students (and staff!) who found the process very calming and engaging.

Our Didgeridoo Demonstrations on Tuesday 24th by Peter Kirkwood were wonderful. Students were delighted to hear the stories told through soundscapes made by the didgeridoo and had a go at feeling the vibrations through the instrument as it was played. Thank you to Peter for the great mini workshops.

On Thursday 25th we all joined together in the Possibility Space to experience the Cultural Infusion performance ‘Follow Your Dreaming’. This was an opportunity for students to engage in contemporary indigenous music and storytelling. It was an inclusive, interactive incursion and lots of fun!

We are opening 4 more places for DANCE PROJECT!

If you would like your child to join this fun and fabulous project please email me: [email protected].

More information and the enrolment form for Dance Project can be found at our website: https://www.stlucys.nsw.edu.au/creative-arts/all-abilities-dance-project/

Prices are adjusted if you start in Week 3/4.

Alessandra Picone Head of Creative Arts

This term marks the changeover for classes in the Creative Arts Programs. Students who engaged in Dance and Visual Arts in Terms 1 and 2 will now have weekly sessions in Music and Drama, and vice versa.

I look forward to sharing their processes with you over the coming weeks and months.

After School Creative Arts Projects began again this week and the students have not missed a beat! It is wonderful to see their energy, engagement and stamina in these specialised workshop projects.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION AND PASTORAL CARE

Prayers for Sr Helen: During the holidays, Sr Helen’s Ella died suddenly and unexpectedly whilst they were away down south on retreat. Understandably, the last few weeks have indeed been difficult and upsetting for Sr Helen as she grieves the loss of her loved companion, and negotiates her immediate future with the use of a cane. Mrs Manzatti has compiled some photos of Sr Helen and Ella that Sr Helen requested as a memory keepsake.

The children have been so compassionate towards Sr Helen upon hearing this news when they returned last week. However, if your child is expressing any sadness about this news and the loss of Ella, please don’t hesitate to contact their teacher or our school psychologists, Mimi and Jennifer.

We ask that you keep Sr Helen in your prayers during this time.

NAIDOC Week liturgy: Last week we celebrated NAIDOC Week as a school with many wonderful activities and performances. One of the activities was a whole school weaving which we will present to the organisation, WEAVE, for whom we fundraised at the end of last term. Thanks to your generosity, we raised close to $200 which we will present to them.

Also, last week, we participated in a whole school liturgy led and organised by Whale Class. It was a beautiful liturgy full of symbolism, with a particular highlight being the singing of ‘Taba Naba’.

Sacramental Program: This term we have commenced preparation for our students who are receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Please keep the following students (and two siblings) in your prayers: Dylan, Elijah, Daniel, Luke, Luka, Christopher, Alexandra, Alexander and Jordan.

CHANGE OF DATE C3 Cares Shopping Trip: You are all invited to attend the next C3 Cares shopping trip on Thursday 15th August. This trip to the C3 Cares Warehouse at Silverwater, is one that is provided each term by our generous friends at C3 Church. The two C3 representatives, Helen and Sue, will meet out the front of our Wahroonga school site at 9.20am, ready for a 9.30am departure. You

are welcome to go with them, or meet them at the warehouse by 10.30am. If you would like to attend, please RSVP by Wednesday 7th August via the following link: https://www.trybooking.com/BELHD

If you have any further questions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me!

OASIS Meeting: This week we held another of our OASIS Meetings down at Narrabeen for our families. This was an opportunity for the families to meet our Family Support Worker, Jono Carey, as well as our First Aid Officer, Kathleen Walsh. Additionally, our School Psychologist, Jennifer Cummings, attended with myself and Terry. It was great being able to discuss with those in attendance ways in which we can continue to offer the right level of support, as well as to continue promoting beneficial services and programs that assist them and their families.

SAVE THE DATE - FATHER’S DAY LITURGY AND OPEN CLASSROOMS: This is to let you know that on Friday 30th August, all our dads and special males (eg uncles/grandads/carers) are invited to attend a special morning we have planned ahead of Father’s Day. Firstly, there will be our whole school liturgy at 9am, which will be followed by activities within your child’s classroom and then a morning tea to finish by 10.30am. More information will be sent out closer to the day, however we look forward to seeing you there!

SAVE THE DATE - PARENT RETREAT: Once again this year, we will be offering our parents the opportunity to have some time for themselves as we open up our school for supervision of students and siblings on Sunday 8th September from 12.30pm until 3.30pm. More details will be sent out closer to the date, but pop this into your diaries now so that you can start planning that lunch/massage/movie/walk/outing you’ve been hoping to enjoy!

Wishing you peace and blessings!

Dominic, Preacher of Grace

Dominic dreamed a world freed from war and violence,Winnowed of greed and falsehood, mirroring truth and goodness

In every sphere of life.Dominic preached in Spirit power, caressed by compassion and mercy,Visioning many grace-filled followers, men and women of the Word,

Ablaze with God’s dream.Dominic walked the Way, reaching out to new frontiers with steady torch of truth held high,

Steeped in prayer night and day, releasing streams of light.

This week, we celebrated the Feast Day of St Dominic with many wonderful experiences and activities planned for the children. Thank you to Mrs Pinker who coordinated the day, with jumping castles,

the Knox Pipe Band and the St Edmund’s Drummers.Thank you also to Mrs Shahereen, and the Hammerhead Class students and staff who prepared

our whole school liturgy for the occasion. It’s on occasions like this that we give thanks for our blessed we are!

May God the Father bless us,May God the Son heal us,

May God the Holy Spirit enlighten us,And give us eyes to see with, ears to hear with, hands to do the work of God with,

Feet to walk the path of justice with and mouths to tell of the Good News.May the angel of peace watch over us and lead us, at last, to our Lord.

Amen.

For the first 2 weeks of term, we focussed on “more” as our Word of the Week. This is often a useful word to use for continuing activities the person loves, like playing on the swing, eating a favourite food, or having a turn with a fun toy.

For the next 2 weeks (week 3 and 4), we’ll be moving on to the word “what”. Questions with “what” can touch on a broad range of potential subjects, and you can do a lot of work in the here and now by promoting use of phrases like “what’s that?” and “what are you doing?”.

For those people using Key Word Sign, here’s the link to the sign for “what” in the Auslan Signbank. http://www.auslan.org.au/dictionary/words/what-1.html

For those using Proloquo2Go, “what” is located on the home page as shown.

THERAPY UPDATE

Head of TherapyDear families,

Welcome back for Term 3! I hope everyone had some good times at home or away during the school break. It’s wonderful to see all the students back at school again. It seems there are still some nasty bugs around though, so stay healthy, and if you’re under the weather I hope you feel better soon.

As I write, we’re anticipating a fun time at St Dominic’s Day on Friday 2nd August here at school. Last year’s was very busy and a pile of fun, and I’m sure this year’s will be no different. It’s one of the biggest days in the St Lucy’s calendar, so bring it on!

I’m sure the progress on the new building will be covered elsewhere in the newsletter, but it’s starting to get really exciting and to look a bit

more like a building. May the favourable building conditions continue. Looking forward to the opening of our fantastic new facilities!

We are offering some workshops again this term. We’ll be covering the basics of Proloquo2Go, we’re running a series of after-school workshops on Positive Behaviour Support, and we’ll be offering Key Word Sign again this term. Keep your eyes on this newsletter and the Facebook page for details, and I’ll also be flicking out an email to St Lucy’s families shortly. Do please let me know if there’s something you’d like us to cover in workshops.

All the best,Steve
