Broomfield Council on the Arts & Humanities Mission Statement “Broomfield Council on the Arts & Humanities is a nonprofit, membership-based organization, dedicated to the advancement of the arts and humanities. We strive for quality programs by nurturing creative ideas, fostering community participation, facilitating professional excellence in member offerings, and ensuring inclusive access for residents of Broomfield and surrounding communities.”

BCAH’s Holiday Fundraiser

Since BCAH cannot hold its annual Holiday Photos with Santa event, the planning committee has come up with a new idea, “Order an Elf!” Here’s how this creative fundraiser works: The family places an online order for an elf visit. The elves visit the house and leaves a little present on the doorstep or driveway for the children. Before they go back to the North Pole, they do a quick little elfie jig to make the children smile and spread joy this holiday season. Do you want to order an elf visit? Send an email to [email protected]. An elf visit is $30 per house for up to three presents for the children. More kiddos? No problem — each additional present is $3. Safely enjoy the fun spirit of the holiday season with an elf visit!

Remembering Barb Schipper

Elis-Barbara Schipper (known to many as “Barb”), Director of the Broomfield Civic Chorus, sadly passed away on September 27, 2020. Barb was one of the kindest people you could ever meet. She greeted many with a warm hug and she had the unique effect of making everyone feel special and important in her presence. Her local history in Broomfield included being a German Language Teacher at the Broomfield High School and the Choral Director of the Presbyterian Church of Broomfield. Her connection to BCAH goes back a long way with her most recent role of being the longstanding and beloved director of the Chorus. She put together exciting choral concerts with favorited selections and was also committed to honoring veterans at annual concerts. Each year at the City & County of Broomfield’s Tree Lighting Ceremony, Barb was there with the Chorus entertaining the community with holiday songs and joyous tunes. Barb’s legacy will live on through the Chorus and we, at BCAH, will never forget her.

For those who have not yet heard the sad news, Sherill Bunetta, President and Treasurer of BCAH, suddenly passed away on October 24, 2020. Sherill was a friend to many and a shining light for us all. Her passion, friendship, thumbs up, and always-encouraging smile will never be forgotten. While she frequently remarked that she wasn't an artist herself, she wholeheartedly believed that arts, culture, and science must be present, vibrant, and available to all in every community, especially in Broomfield. She was a dedicated audience member, appreciator of creative expression, and champion for anyone looking to share their talents with the community. At every event, she was up front smiling and welcoming the community or behind the scenes making the magic happen. Sherill was vocal supporter of BCAH, an expert bookkeeper, and an exceptional volunteer. She was BCAH’s Treasurer for 25 years and its advocate for much longer. Sherill did the work of three and finding one person to fill her shoes is an impossible task. BCAH needs you now more than ever to help our creative nonprofit! There is no better time than now to contribute to the arts in your community. Volunteer Our Board and staff need volunteers who can volunteer for one or more of the following: accounting, administrative work, fundraising, and relationship-building. The Board meets once per month at 11 a.m. on the second Tuesday via Zoom or by phone, except in June, July, and December. To find out more, send an email to [email protected]. Donate Sign up to give monthly donations through BCAH’s website by clicking the Donate button; send in a tax deductible donation via check; or schedule a donation for Colorado Gives Day through BCAH’s Colorado Gives profile at ColoradoGives.org/BroomfieldCouncilArtsHumanities. Donations scheduled for December 8 are boosted by the incentive fund (see below). Help us expand our staff through your donations BCAH has been growing for the past few years and is in need of expanding our staff. Additionally, without Sherill’s volunteer support, our staffing needs have become more pressing. Sherill created this community of artistic and cultural development, educational entertainment, and community connection. Please give so BCAH can remain sustainable and carry on Sherill’s work of enriching Broomfield and ensuring the success and longevity of BCAH.

Way to Give in Sherill’s Name and

Give to BCAH this Holiday Season

Colorado Gives Day unites all Coloradans in a common goal to strengthen the state’s nonprofits by giving to their favorite charities online. The state’s largest community giving movement has raised a total of $257 million since the one-day giving event began in 2010. Every donation made through ColoradoGives.org on Colorado Gives Day is boosted by the incentive fund. For example, if a nonprofit organization receives 10 percent of the total donations made on Colorado Gives Day, that same nonprofit receives 10 percent of the $1 Million Incentive Fund. The Colorado Gives Day $1 Million Incentive Fund is one of the largest gives-day incentive funds in the country.

CEG Reflects on Two Influential Supporters

As Chamber Ensemble con Grazia (CEG) quietly reflects on this most unusual year of 2020, we wish to express our gratitude to all who support our chamber music offerings in the intimate Brunner Farmhouse. In particular, we remember two supporters who helped CEG to come into existence.

Sherill Bunetta of BCAH patiently guided CEG in the details of grant writing, financial planning, record-keeping, and advertising with the confidence that CEG would be a valuable addition to the Broomfield cultural scene. Sherill’s dedication to CEG was of great encouragement as she was either arriving early to sit in the audience for concerts, or working in the back office with the door ajar to hear the music. In particular, Sherill and Ed tirelessly helped behind the scenes with the rearrangement of chairs and tables which allowed the musicians more time to warm-up and to interact with audience members after the concerts. Sherill’s bright smile can not be replaced.

William Kearns, co-founder of CEG, was instrumental in transforming the dream of a regular concert series into reality during his octogenarian years. He not only played his french horn on most CEG concerts at the Auditorium and the Brunner Farmhouse, but was the force behind the creation of the appealing arrangements of musicals that CEG presented to the great delight of many audiences, especially those in retirement homes. Bill’s expertise with this particular genre gave him the ability to highlight one or two sub plots, arranged with narration in between songs to move the story forward. Other musicals included two versions of The Sound of Music, South Pacific, Kismet, Martha and West Side Story. Bill’s musicianship, vast musical knowledge, and generosity will always be part of the CEG spirit.

Broomfield Music Teachers Association (BMTA) is happy to announce that the 44th Annual Broomfield Piano Festival will be held in March 2021. Due to health and safety concerns currently revolving around COVID, the event will be entirely virtual for the first time in the festival’s long standing history. Students will prepare and record via video three approved repertoire selections to be submitted to the chairperson as “unlisted” YouTube links no later than 12 p.m. (MST) on Saturday, March 6, 2021. A panel of three judges will review all of the videos, critique students’ performances, and award winners for each age division over the course of the week from March 6-13, 2021. An announcement of winners will be posted by Sunday, March 14, 2021. As per usual, the age divisions for the festival are, as follows: Division 1: 3rd-4th grades Division 2: 5th-6th grades Division 3: 7th-8th grades Division 4: 9th-10th grades Division 5: 11th-12th grades Student and teacher registration for the 2021 Broomfield Piano Festival is due by January 30, 2021. Complete rules, information, and online entry forms are available at the following link: BroomfieldMTA.org/Broomfield-Piano-Festival/.

Sohap Ensemble

Something’s Happening Ensemble ‘Sohap’ is a Colorado-based creative start-up dedicated to presenting excellent performances of new and underrepresented music. Born out of the 2020 global pandemic and national unrest, Sohap is a musical response to our rapidly changing world. We believe that classical music must evolve with our culture by modernizing the concert experience and telling the musical stories that are not heard in today’s traditional classical venues. While we may not always play music you already know or that’s performed in a concert hall, we promise that you will walk away with a new musical perspective, if not a favorite! Sohap performed its first-ever virtual concert in October, “VOTE!” that featured an All-American program with works by Aaron Copland, Adolphus Hailstork, Steven Mark Kohn, William Grant Still, and more. Their next concert took place in November with “Juxtaposition,” which was a concert about contrast and how we experience it. Sign up for the Sohap Listeners’ Club for FREE to hear the great music of our time at these monthly performances and learn more about our educational offerings including Private Lessons and our School Program. Sign up for the Listeners’ Club today at: SohapEnsemble.com/listeners-club. Would you like to support this innovative program? CCD Presents

The Nutcracker Sweet

In a time when many treasured traditions are threatened, many performing arts companies have been forced to cancel their holiday productions entirely, leaving families wondering how they can even begin to capture the magic of the season amid such challenging conditions. In response and in defiance of everything that says "no," Colorado Conservatory of Dance (CCD) has reimagined The Nutcracker and is bringing it to the screen as The Nutcracker Sweet! Viewers will be able to cuddle up with their loved ones around the television or other device as CCD streams a new version of the timeless classic--complete with smaller, socially-distanced cast and interactive moments for you to share delicious treats with characters from the ballet. One of the most unique aspects of The Nutcracker Sweet will be audience members’ ability to buy specially-themed baskets of holiday treats along with their ticket/link purchase, then join in with cast members from the ballet during the streaming event to enjoy their goodies simultaneously with their favorite characters in real time. This approach, according to Artistic Director Julia Wilkinson Manley, “allows our audience members—wherever they happen to be—to feel like they’re part of the action, and while we know it’s not an equal substitute for a live, in-person performance, we feel like it’s a great way to build a virtual community around this timeless family classic.” Joined virtually by renowned professional guest artists John Lam and Nina Matiashvili of Boston Ballet and Chase O’Connell and Beckanne Sisk of Ballet West, the streaming performance is an intimate journey through the fantastical world of The Nutcracker as seen through the eyes of young Clara. Patrons can take advantage of five streaming performances. The Nutcracker Sweet promises to be a memorable, fascinating experience with something for the whole family to enjoy—exactly when we all need a little holiday spirit the most.

WHEN Friday, December 11 at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, December 12 at 1 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Sunday, December 13 at 1 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. WHERE Streaming to any device TICKETS: $34.95, performance link will be emailed to patrons prior to the performance To order tickets, please visit www.Nutcracker2020.com or call 303-466-5685.

The Broomfield Council on the Arts & Humanities (BCAH) and its programs have been significantly impacted by the current circumstances associated with COVID-19. Whenever possible, BCAH programs and their talented and committed volunteers have found unique ways to share enriching opportunities and content with the local community. ASTER Women’s Chamber Choir — While the choir’s 2019-2020 season has been canceled, Dr. Christina Lynn-Craig, ASTER’s Artistic Director, continues to work on ASTER’s Christmas CD (see page 9). Broomfield Community Players (BCP) — BCP is excited to announce its innovative holiday production, Virtually Christmas (see page 9). Broomfield Film Project (BFP) — BFP wrapped up its special partnership showing of the film “My Wild Heart.” Presented with the Denver Film Society, a percentage of proceeds was donated to the Alzheimer’s Association. Broomfield Spellbinders — A wonderfully engaging, virtual storytelling event is scheduled in December (see page 8). Outreach events (staff-presented) — BCAH held the first annual “Sherill’s Pumpkin Contest.” In October, Sherill came up with idea for the pumpkin contest. Pumpkins were painted, decorated, and carved to be entered into the contest to win prizes. There were 14 creative pumpkin entries. Elle Esposito won 1st place for her painted jack’o lantern. Andrew Rigirozzi won 2nd place for his “Five Nights at Freddies” painted pumpkin. Danya Lewis won 3rd place for her creative pumpkin. Also in October, BCAH participated in the free “Halloween Bike & Walk” event that drew over 40 attendees for socially-distanced fun starting at Broomfield FISH with a food donation and a costume parade. Other stops for this event included the Brunner Farmhouse and Gardens for live accordion music from John Heins and the contest’s pumpkin patch; Code Blue Computing at Garden Center for trick-or-treating; Broomfield Veterans Museum for a monster rock scavenger hunt; and the Depot Museum for crafts, stories, and tours. At the Halloween event, Rachel and Greg from “Rachel and Greg Photo” were kind enough to be in attendance with their camera ready for the many memorable moments worthy to be called, “a Kodak moment.” This wonderful couple live locally and were a pleasure to have at the event. The social distancing restrictions necessary to combat the spread of Covid have deprived most Broomfield Spellbinders’ volunteer storytellers of the face-to-face interaction with listeners in local classrooms and senior facilities that is at the heart of the organization’s mission. Like many others, we have worked to become more proficient and more comfortable with video conferencing. More than one-third of our members participated in four-hour workshops (presented over two days) that examined the differences between live and virtual storytelling and gave participants the opportunity to practice new approaches and receive peer feedback. Each school system has its own protocols for outside interaction with its students, so our members have remained flexible in order to share stories in a manner that complies with those varied guidelines. Our early experience has demonstrated that virtual storytelling can be effective, but we also now know that teachers must overcome significant technological challenges to include us in their lesson plans. It’s understandable that many of the teachers have chosen to delay our storytelling efforts until the classroom situation returns to normal. We have made it clear that we are ready when they are. Meanwhile, a few of our members are putting their new virtual storytelling skills to good use and are sharing stories with young listeners; some of whom are in school classrooms and others who are learning at home. Several new members have joined our expanded Steering Committee and will bolster our efforts to support our members and intended audiences. We have also initiated monthly Virtual Story Circles that allow participants to gain experience with the technological challenges of virtual telling and to share new stories and help each other refine their tales and techniques. Our monthly chapter meetings (via Zoom) continue to be well-attended and provide more networking opportunities as well as tools and techniques for expanding story repertoires and honing telling skills. We are planning a webinar from 4-5 p.m. on December 12 in which our storytellers will share “Stories of the Season” with the Broomfield community and beyond. Details will be available on the BCAH website. Be on the lookout for details from BCAH and plan to join us. It will help us all get the “Holiday Spirit,” a much-needed antidote to these trying times. NOTE: Like everyone else associated with BCAH, we were shock and saddened by Sherill Bunetta’s sudden passing. She was a true friend and advocate. We will miss her.

Broomfield Art Guild News

Broomfield Art Guild’s in-person meetings and activities are currently paused, but we are planning a few virtual events in the December through February timeframe. We will host a virtual Christmas gathering from 1-3 p.m. on December 8 to allow members to visit while opening packages from a porch-drop art and card exchange. In January, we are planning to start exhibiting member art in the upper lobby of the new Broomfield Community Center. Camie Rigirozzi will be organizing and coordinating artist sign-ups for this space. We may resume monthly virtual meetings next year if there is member interest. We are pleased to share that Broomfield Art Guild member and local wildlife artist Dennis Dickerson recently won a commission from The Rocky Mountain Wolf Project which raises awareness of the gray wolves in Colorado. His commissioned work is on display at the Jax location in Broomfield. To find out more about this fun and creative art group, follow the Broomfield Art Guild’s Facebook page and visit our website at BroomfieldArtGuild.org. If you would like to contact us, send an email to [email protected].

Virtually Christmas December 18 at 7 p.m. Link to be shared on BCP’s Facebook page Looking for a heartwarming diversion for the upcoming holiday season? Search no further! The Broomfield Community Players (BCP), a program of the Broomfield Council on the Arts & Humanities, will present a holiday gift to the community in December with a series of seven original monologues featuring a personal connection to each actor telling the story. The performances will be filmed at the Broomfield Auditorium and broadcast on YouTube beginning with a premier performance at 7p.m. on December 18. A diverse group of talented volunteer actors have been working hard to create and refine their stories, rehearse online, and make this a special show for everyone to enjoy. Max Cabot, Director said, “These stories are funny, sentimental and infuriating, but all with a common theme of hope and charity.” Actors include Steve Blount, Theresa Collins, Sam Gilstrap, Elizabeth Lietaert, Wade Livingston, Rob Mess, Kelli Oberndorf, Magally Rizo, Andrew Uhlenhopp, and AJ Voliton. Themes include celebrating Christmas far from home; what the holidays mean to a single parent; family issues in a mixed culture household; fun, sadness, delight and despair – all the crazy mixture of emotions that can accompany the holiday season. These stories, told beautifully by our remarkable cast, will certainly resonate with everyone. Watch the Broomfield Community Players’ Facebook page for updates and links to view the show. The performance will run approximately 90 minutes and is free, though donations will be gratefully accepted. To make a donation, visit ArtsinBroomfield.org, click on the Donate button, and choose Broomfield Community Players from the program drop-down list.

Broomfield Community Players Presents Virtually Christmas, A Theatrical Gift to the Community

ASTER Women’s Chamber Choir

Memories of holiday concerts from the past will become a Christmas CD in the future. Using recordings from live performances and “remastering” them in the recording studio ASTER Women’s Chamber Choir, a program of the Broomfield Council on the Arts & Humanities, hopes to bring much joy to the world in time for Christmas 2021. The choir will be adding a few new pieces so that the CD will include the beautiful voices currently singing with the group, as well as the wonderful voices who sang with ASTER in the past. All the Way Home will include pieces about snow, angels, stables, elves and miracles. Traditional Scandinavian holiday music and excerpts from Benjamin Britten’s Ceremony of Carols and contemporary compositions by women composers Sarah Quartel and Amy Bernon, along with arrangements by Artistic Director Christina Lynn-Craig, make this an eclectic and imaginative tribute to one of the most special times of the year. ASTER hoped to have this ready for you at our November 2020 concert, which could not be held. Instead, the choir looks forward to when we can share our plans for a concerts and eagerly awaits the time when we can sing for you again.
