ENGINEERING THE WAYDear Donors,

Because of your generosity, Colorado School of Mines continues to

build momentum in earth, energy and environment, fields that are

critically important to the world today. It is our pleasure to thank each

and every one of you for helping to further Mines’ distinction through

your philanthropic contributions.

Over the past year the Colorado School of Mines Foundation

recommitted itself to strengthening Colorado School of Mines through

private support. With endorsement from the alumni association and

the faculty, the foundation modernized its bylaws to better reflect best

practices and established a board of governors of up to 35 members to

extend our relationships and further develop private philanthropy for

the benefit of Mines.

This 2007 – 2008 Annual Report to Donors illustrates the foundation’s

focus on advancing the school. It celebrates the outstanding

commitment of our alumni, friends, students, faculty, staff and parents.

It also recognizes the many corporations and foundations whose

investments support Colorado School of Mines’ educational mission

and research enterprise.

Last year, donors contributed more than $14 million for student

support, endowed faculty positions, facilities, and academic and

extracurricular programs that provide a strong foundation for our

excellence. A record 762 contributors made gifts at or above the $1,000

President’s Council level. With such a strong community of support

behind them, our students, faculty and graduates are engineering the

way toward a prosperous and sustainable future for our global society.

As this letter is written, the world is in the midst of an economic crisis.

We understand that these are difficult times for most everyone, and

are especially grateful for your interest and support. Your gifts ensure

continued opportunities for the outstanding young people who choose

to pursue a Mines degree. Your investment is in the future. Thank you

for keeping this exceptional institution moving forward.

up to the challenge

Editor’s Note: While this annual report primarily covers gifts made between July 1,

2007 and June 30, 2008, this article covers progress on a multi-year project with

comprehensive gift information as of November 15, 2008.

Mines will break ground for Marquez Hall this summer, elevating

the school’s profile and expanding its capabilities as a global energy

leader. A landmark $10 million challenge gift from Tim ’80 and Bernie

Marquez launched the building campaign, and Mines recently raised an

additional $10 million to match the Marquez contribution, thanks to

generous investments from corporate partners, alumni and friends.

With an outstanding $2 million contribution, EnCana Oil & Gas (USA)

has led corporate investment in the Marquez Hall project, followed by

Chevron, Marathon Oil Corporation and Hess Corporation, who have

each pledged one million dollars. Other major corporate supporters to

date include Anadarko Petroleum, BHP Billiton Petroleum, Bonanza

Creek Energy, Devon Energy, Noble Energy, St. Mary Land and Explo-

ration, Questar, Ward Petroleum and Whiting Petroleum.

A $1.5 million bequest from the estate of Mahir M. Jalili ’71 is the

second-largest individual contribution toward the facility, after the

Marquez gift. Major donors also include William Barrett, Harry Campbell

’42, Marshall ’67 and Jane Crouch, Lawrence ’49 and Rose Curtis, Will

Fleckenstein ’86, M ’88, PhD ’00, Bud and Kaye Isaacs ’64, Joe ’42 and

Mary Keating, and Michael ’83 and Patricia ’83 Starzer.

Designed to accommodate expanded student enrollment and

increased faculty research activities, Marquez Hall will house Mines’

world-renowned petroleum engineering department and facilitate

interdisciplinary work with the school’s geology and geological

engineering and geophysics departments. The building will include smart

classrooms equipped with wireless networking and interactive multimedia

technology, state-of-the-art teaching and research laboratories, and a

multi-purpose visualization classroom.

Marquez Hall is a two-phase $45 million facility. Phase one requires $25

million in private funding. Fundraising continues in order to reach the

phase-one goal, and an additional $20 million in funding will be required

to complete the building's second phase.

to remember his grandfather, Guy Grimes ’32;

honor his father and mother, Gerald ’58 and

Abigail Grimes; and celebrate his parents’ 50th

wedding anniversary. Establishment of the

Grimes Family Scholarship was announced at

Gerry’s 50th reunion dinner in an inspirational

letter written by David, who couldn’t make it to

the event. The new scholarship fund will sup-

port deserving Mines’ students and enable them

to achieve their educational goals.

Siblings Denice Volk Reich, Richard W. Volk ’58,

Russell D. Volk and Dasa A. Metzler established the

Russell H. and Alice C. Volk Scholarship Fund in 2008

to honor their parents and provide scholarship sup-

port for Mines upperclassmen who are in danger of

losing funding to continue their education at the school.

Russell H. Volk ’26, M ’31 and his wife, Alice, instilled

a strong work ethic in their children, something the

Volk siblings hope to promote among Mines students.

This new source of scholarship awards will allow at-risk

undergraduates to persevere and successfully complete

their Mines degrees.

Margaret Campbell and her hus-

band, Edward Johnson, contributed

$50,000 in 2008 and $50,000 in 2007

to honor Margaret’s father and one

of Mines strongest philanthropic

supporters, Harry D. Campbell ’42, on

his birthday. These gifts were made,

according to Margaret, “in gratitude

for the rich legacy he has given to his

children and their families,” and have

gone toward the Harry D. Campbell Endowed Scholarship Fund, which

Harry established in 2006 to provide scholarships for Mines student-

athletes who are on the varsity football team.

Pat ’68 and Sharon James established the

Leslie S. James Endowed Scholarship Fund

10 years ago to honor Pat’s father and

support mining and metallurgy students in

their junior and senior years at Mines. This

year, Pat and Sharon continued their support

of these scholarships with a $25,000 contribu-

tion in honor of Pat’s 40th reunion. Since the

first awards were made in 1998, 15 student

scholarships have been made possible by Pat

and Sharon’s generosity.

75% of Mines students participate in

varsity and recreational sports—and

they are as committed to excellence

on the playing field as they are in

the classroom. Alumni and friends

have generously supported efforts to

develop state-of-the-art athletics and

recreation facilities for our high-caliber

athletes and energetic student body.

The STermole Track and Field complex, named for

ardent Mines supporters Frank and Dot Stermole, will be ready for the

2010 season with venues for all track and field events built to NCAA

specifications. The Stermoles have supported Mines athletics, as well

as other campus initiatives, for more than 30 years and have provided

major support for the track and field complex. Frank Stermole, professor

The JameS W. darden BaSeBall Field, dedicated last April,

pays tribute to a remarkable coach who touched the lives of hundreds of

student-athletes during his 38 seasons at Mines. Leadership gifts from

Steve Chesebro’ ’64, Rob McKee ’68 and Bob Irelan ’68 launched the

renovation of the Oredigger diamond in Darden’s honor, and many

former players and friends of Mines athletics made contributions to

help complete the field’s transformation.

In fall 2007, Mines’ STudenT recreaTion cenTer opened

to great enthusiasm among recreational athletes and varsity competitors

alike. With Lockridge Arena, an exciting venue for basketball and

volleyball made possible through an outstanding $3 million gift from

John ’52 and Erika Lockridge, and a state-of-the-art aquatics complex,

the facility gives varsity athletes a competitive edge. The Adolph Coors

Foundation Fitness Lab, the Harold and Patricia Korell Outdoor

Recreation Center, the Maytag-Anibarro Family Climbing Wall and a

gymnasium dedicated to intramural sports provide the entire student

body with opportunities to balance Mines’ rigorous academics with

sports and fitness. More than 50 donors contributed a total of $6.7

million toward making the recreation center a reality.

Plans for a new FooTBall STadium have been jumpstarted with

a $700,000 gift from Harry Campbell ’42. The stadium’s synthetic-turf

field will be named in honor of Campbell, quarterback of Mines’ 1939

undefeated football team. A longtime, outstanding Mines supporter, he

has recently made generous contributions to the Harry D. Campbell

Endowed Scholarship, the Harry D. Campbell Endowment for

Excellence in Football, and Marquez Hall.

Recent graduates made generous commitments to Mines in 2007 – 2008. Of

the alumni who graduated between 1999 and 2007, 286 individuals made

gifts to Mines totaling $57,187 – a 36 percent increase over the previous

year’s recent graduates group. Seventy-eight of these donors made gifts

at the Young Alumni President’s Council level. By making their alma mater

a philanthropic priority, these newly minted Miners help carry the school’s

outstanding reputation forward.

ClaSS of 2008 leave their legaCy The Class of 2008 raised a total of $5,711 for The Mines Fund

through the student-organized Hand It Off campaign. With 20

percent of class members—102 donors—contributing to the gift,

the 2008 graduating seniors accomplished their goal of beating the

previous year’s participation rate of 18 percent. The Hand It Off

campaign was strengthened by a contribution from the Class of 2007

senior gift committee and generous matches from President and Mrs.

Scoggins, as well as two members of Mines’ Board of Trustees, Frank

DeFilippo ’72 and Terrance Tschatschula.

“We chose to designate our class gift to The Mines Fund because it

supports Mines’ highest-priority needs,” says Stacie LaRocque ’08, co-

chair of the Hand It Off campaign. Stacie continues, “We have benefited

from the generosity of alumni who came before us, and we want to

return the favor to ensure that future students have the same valuable

experiences we had.”

“Carolyn and I have contributed to The Mines

Fund each year since my graduation in the early

1970s because Mines graduates possess the

unique skills needed not only to develop the new

technologies and industrial processes that sustain

our modern society, but also to address the

environmental consequences of those processes.

By supporting Colorado School of Mines, we

can help keep our country competitive in the global economy

and enhance the sustainable development of our planet’s natural

resources.”

the educational experienceBequests, endowMents and annual support For Mines’ world-Class proGraMs

its mining history collections. Frank

Seeton, a 1947 mining engineering

graduate, has been supporting Mines

athletics and academics with annual

gifts for nearly three decades. The

media room in Mines’ Student Rec

Center bears his name in honor of his

generosity. Frank’s recent contributions,

along with annual gifts made by his

sister-in-law, Louise R. Seeton, in honor

of his birthday, enabled the library to

purchase special powered lockers that

securely charge laptops, iPods and

other devices for students and faculty.

By incorporating up-to-the-minute

amenities like powered lockers, Arthur

Lakes Library addresses the needs of the Mines community and enhances

its stature among its peers.

Support for Mines’ academic, research and other campus programs takes many forms. Some of the school’s most loyal partners have helped to ensure that our departments and divisions have up-to-date equipment and support for program development, that our library provides the resources our students need, and that our expert faculty have opportunities to enhance curriculum and improve student learning. These generous contributions make a real difference in numerous program areas across campus, helping Mines sustain the level of excellence in academics and research for which it has long been known.

When Charlie Fitch ’49 passed away in March, the school

realized a $300,000 charitable gift annuity that Fitch had

thoughtfully established for the benefit of Mines. He had

been a longtime supporter of both mining engineering and

chemistry education at the school, making significant gifts

that most recently enabled the Department of Chemistry and

Geochemistry to establish the Charles R. Fitch Laboratory in

Coolbaugh Hall, and to purchase first-class instrumentation

equipment for student and faculty use. By leveraging additional

financial resources with Mr. Fitch’s generous gifts, the depart-

ment increased the power of his contributions to make an

even greater difference for students. Charlie’s support for aca-

demic programs at Mines is generous, and his legacy will continue into

the years ahead.

Gifts to Arthur Lakes Library empower every researcher, from the

undergraduate to the industry professional, and enable the library

to continue to provide invaluable resources for the entire Mines

community. Last year, the library received several gifts to its Library

for the 21st Century Fund that created a more modern, welcoming

research and study environment for students and faculty, and impacted

A new endowment, spearheaded by Stan Dempsey and estab-

lished by the Society of Mining Law Antiquarians in partnership

with the Rocky Mountain Mineral Law Foundation with gifts

totaling $25,000, will allow Arthur Lakes Library to build a robust

mining and mineral law history collection. By providing support

for the collection in perpetuity, the endowment opens new doors for

the Russell L. and Lyn Wood Mining History Archive, enabling the

library to assemble a comprehensive collection of mining and mineral

law resources and to preserve some of the original sources of Western

history.

When Ralph Hennebach ’41, H’90 passed away last March, he

left a strong legacy at Mines through a named endowment

for the humanities. The Hennebach Visiting Professorship and

Program in the Humanities was established in 1991, in memory

of his father and in honor of his family, to infuse new ideas,

teaching methods and perspective into Mines’ curriculum. Mr.

Hennebach once explained, “My involvement with literature

and the other humanities has broadened me and greatly enriched

my life, and I hope to help others have the same experience.”

With nearly $2 million in contributions toward this unique

program over his lifetime, Ralph Hennebach has surely provided

a welcome and essential complement to Mines’ technical course

offerings, and opened the world of humanities to thousands of

future scientists and engineers.

Global energy demands and unprecedented advancements in

engineering practices and technologies mean that Mines must

work harder than ever to stay at the forefront of engineering

education, and help build a pipeline of talent for the future.

Some of Mines’ most loyal contributors have ensured that curriculum

advancement efforts at the school will

be supported in perpetuity. The Grandey

Curriculum Mini-Grant Endowment,

established by Gerald ’68 and Tina Grandey,

provides faculty mini-grants for program

development and enhancement. The Grandeys

established the fund in 2004 and contributed

once again last fall to the endowment, making

their total gifts to the fund more than $150,000

in support of projects that help prepare the

next generation of engineers for work in the

global arena of natural resources. The John U.

and Sharon L. Trefny Endowment for

Curriculum Advancement has received more

than $800,000 since its establishment in 2002,

and serves as another major source of funding

for engineering education at Mines. Outreach

efforts at the school were bolstered last spring

with a $2.5 million challenge grant from Stephen D. Bechtel, Jr. H’07.

The Bechtel K-5 Educational Excellence Initiative is enabling Mines

faculty and students to work with local public school districts to spark

student interest in math, engineering and science, and to create effective

teaching strategies for educators nationwide.

investing in mines’ initiativeCorporate and Foundation partners Make tHeir Mark at MinesInvestments from corporations, foundations and other organizations are essential to Mines’ continued leadership in earth, energy and environment. Their support for Mines’ people and programs sustains the school’s distinction in engineering and applied science teaching and research.

Metallurgical and materials engineering has long been one of Mines’

areas of expertise thanks in part to support from industry partners like

U.S. Steel. The company has been a loyal partner of the school, with

recent gifts from U.S. Steel Foundation, Inc. going to fund the U.S. Steel

Scholarship Program, which supported 20 metallurgy undergraduates

last year. In addition, U.S. Steel provides ongoing support for Mines’

Advanced Steel Processing and Products Research Center (ASPPRC).

David Matlock, center director and a professor in the Department of

Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, says, “U.S. Steel has been a vital

corporate partner through its ongoing support for promising metallurgy

students at Mines and contributions to the ASPPRC. With their

investments, we are better able to prepare future leaders in metallurgy

and materials engineering, and to take the lead in advancing ferrous

metallurgy nationwide.”

With approximately a half million dollars in support for scholarships,

fellowships and faculty development since 1995, the Henry Luce

Foundation has fostered continued excellence at Mines. The New York

foundation’s Clare Booth Luce Program is one of the most significant

sources of private support for women in science, mathematics and

engineering in the U.S., and, in 2004, the Luce Foundation established

the Clare Booth Luce Professorship in Engineering at Mines. Kathryn

Johnson was appointed the Luce Assistant Professor in the Division of

Engineering in 2005. Under the leadership of Johnson and her colleagues

at partner universities and national laboratories, a new center – Colorado

Research in Education and Wind (CREW) – was recently approved

to advance the science of wind power. CREW is one of six centers

created and planned as part of the Colorado Renewable Energy

Collaboratory, a research partnership among Mines, Colorado State

University, the University of Colorado at Boulder, and the National

Renewable Energy Laboratory.

14

With a $300,000 gift, the Xcel Energy Foundation is investing in

research that will lead to more efficient energy technologies and a

cleaner environment in Colorado. Xcel’s grant helped establish the

Colorado Clean Energy and Environment Project, administered

by the Colorado Energy Research Institute (CERI) housed at the

school. Kevin Moore, Gerard A. Dobelman Distinguished Chair and

engineering professor at Mines, says, “The long-term impact of this

project will be that Coloradoans can enjoy clean and efficient energy

through improved conventional energy generation capabilities and

widespread adoption of distributed, renewable energy technologies.”

Mines’ project partners include the University of Colorado and

Colorado State University, the three of which will draw upon their

combined research and development expertise to address some of

the technical barriers to clean energy generation and distribution in

the state.

The Adolph Coors Foundation has been a valued partner of

Colorado School of Mines since the 1970s. Last year, the foundation

made contributions totaling $1,097,000 to support scholarships, the

Student Recreation Center and two endowed faculty positions. Nigel

Sammes joined Mines’ Department of Metallurgical and Materials

Engineering in 2007 as the Herman F. Coors Professorial Chair

in Ceramics. The focus of his research at the Colorado Center for

Advanced Ceramics (CCAC) is the development of the fundamental

knowledge that generates technological developments in advanced

ceramics and composite materials. Anthony Dean holds the other

faculty position established at Mines by the Coors Foundation. As

William K. Coors Distinguished Chair in Chemical Engineering,

Dean leads a dynamic kinetics research team and teaches in the

Department of Chemical Engineering. Dean says, “Establishment

of the Coors Chair was a major factor in my decision to come to

Mines. These funds gave me the flexibility to jumpstart our research

program and allowed me to add a senior researcher to my team. With

this support, we have developed detailed models that range from the

kinetics in solid-oxide fuel cells, to biomass conversion, to combustion

of alternate fuels.”

The Viola Vestal Coulter Foundation has been an invaluable partner

of Mines for more than four decades, contributing to the school through

scholarships, fellowships, faculty support and programs with nearly $2.3

million in total gifts, $110,000 last year alone. The Coulter Foundation

has been vital to the evolution

of Mines’ mineral economics

program, now regarded as one

of the finest such programs in the

world. As part of its ongoing

support, the Coulter Foundation

established a named professorship

in economics to help Mines

attract experts in the field. John

Cuddington, the William Jesse

Coulter Professor of Mineral

Economics, joined Mines in

2005. An expert on modeling

and forecasting commodity prices, Cuddington attributes his expanding

research activities to the availability of funding from the Coulter

Foundation. “Coulter funding has been pivotal in facilitating my pursuit

of new aspects of my research on trends and cycles in metals prices,

namely the measurement and modeling of super cycles in metal prices.

Over the past year, this has resulted in two published journal articles

with my PhD student co-author, Daniel Jerrett, plus a number of

additional research papers that are still in process.”

the president’s councilThe generous alumni and friends who comprise the 2007-2008 Mines President’s Council – donors who contribute $1,000 or more during a given fiscal year – provided almost $7 million this year to help fund the school’s strategic priorities in earth, energy and environment. These dedicated individuals set an all-time record of 762 President’s Council members this year, almost 80 of whom were recent graduates giving through Mines’ special young alumni program.

The President’s Council is founded on the principle that the school’s vital mission is best served when a dedicated community of alumni and friends remains intellectually and financially invested in the institution. Mines would like to thank them for helping to carry on its long history of philanthropic support. Add “President’s Council members are highlighted in the listings that follow. The complete 2007 - 2008 President’s Council Directory is available online at http://giving.mines.edu/pcdirectory.
