Tips for Moviemaking
Start Small: Make a movie about a single conflict, with one major conflict, one to three characters, and one or two locations
Be original: Odds are your ideas are much more interesting than you doing someone else’s!
Plan ahead: Moviemaking takes time. A ten-minute video could take a long time to make!

Storyboarding
-
Storyboarding
As we previously talked about, the more you plan the easier the shooting will go.
Storyboarding is a visual representation of the camera shots we will use when actually filmmaking.
A storyboard is essentially a blueprint for your movie.
-
Overview
Reminders:• Switch up your shots• You don’t need to draw to storyboard• Storyboarding Tools
-
Switch up Your Shots
When you first start storyboarding it is easy to draw everything from the same angle.
Use a variety of shots to create visual interest and create meaning in the film.

You don’t need to draw!
While storyboarding is always recommended, you don’t need to draw in order to storyboard.
Taking test pictures of people, action figures, or simply using stick figures will help when you actually start filming.
-
Storyboard Software
There are several versions of online storyboard tools. While they are typically less detailed than something you can create, they are often an easy way to get started.
Left is a storyboard from ‘Storyboard That’ that offers simple storyboard tools for free.

Filming
-
Cheap Lighting
You don’t need a huge budget to use ‘film lighting.’ We recommend using cheap clamp lights and China balls. When using any kind of lighting for filmmaking be cautious about burning yourself. These two lights can create great effects for around $8-20 dollars each.
-
The Creative Studio
We have a bunch of cameras and film equipment you can use in the building.
• You must use equipment in the building• You have to be accompanied by an adult

Sound
-
Basic Tips for Sound
Sounds Tips• Avoid recording sound outside• Avoid using the camera microphone• Always use headphones to record• Record sound effects later and add
them in (this is called Foley)
-
Editing
-
iMovie
There are lots of different kinds of editing software. We recommend using iMovie, which is located in the Silent Computer Lab and Creative Studio.
-
iMovie
iMovie allows you to import, drag, and drop files very easily.
If you’re using a public computer make sure to create a new library and start editing.
-
Final Cut Pro
Once you’re a little more comfortable with iMovie, feel free to start using more advanced software such as Adobe Premiere and Final Cut Pro.
