Iwas impressed with this latest Kia Picanto. I liked the exterior styling, which I thought was attractive and well balanced. The inside was similarlyattractive and well finished, exuding a feeling of the highest quality in everything you could see and touch. The leather covered steering wheel inparticular had the feel of the highest quality and luxury.

easy to get in and out and it provided seats andadequate power for all one’s normal motoringneeds. The two outer rear seats have ISOfix fittingsfor child safety seats. While the normal luggagespace is small, the split rear seats can be folded ifadditional space is required for larger items, orwhen going on holiday with only two people onboard.

No jack, wheel spanner or spare wheel isprovided. Instead there is a container of latex and aplug-in air compressor, so it is advisable to be amember of the AA or some other rescue service incase you need them in an emergency. This isespecially important if you intend to go touring, orholidaying away from your local environment.

The instrument panel is well laid out forcomfort and ease of use. The three main analogueinstruments have black faces with white lettering.The large centre unit is the speedometer and itincorporates the trip and total distance recorders inred figures. On the right is the fuel level gauge,

Under the bonnet there was an all new threecylinder petrol engine. My past impressions of threecylinder engines, were that they could be a bitraucous once they got going and especially whenaccelerating. This engine, however, remained wellsubdued at all speeds. Perhaps it was just wellinsulated, but looking under the bonnet there didnot appear to be any excessive amounts ofsoundproofing materials.

The engine is linked to a five speed manualgearbox. The gearchange was smooth and precise,which is just as well, as in city and suburbandriving, you do have to make frequent changes,especially when the traffic slows and thenaccelerates as it usually does. Once you can getaway from the traffic, the Picanto will cruise alongcomfortably in fifth gear, but in undulatingcountryside, you may well have to change down forrises in the road, depending on your cruisingspeed.

Although it has a small capacity engine, itsperformance is not compromised. Top speed is saidto be 153 kph (95 mph), which is well above thenational speed limits, for both motorways and otherroads. Acceleration from 0-100 kph takes 14.4seconds, which is perfectly acceptable for a car ofthis size. Remember this is a comfortable fourseater economy car, not a boyracer’s drag racingmachine.

A number of years ago when I had the previousmodel Picanto on test, I was convinced that its fuelconsumption was far heavier than that suggestedby the EU testing standards for Urban, Extra urbanand Combined cycles. Unfortunately when Icollected this car, the tank was not full. I thought Ihad reset the trip mileage, but a few days later, itbecame obvious that I had not. As with the previousmodel, I got the impression that this new Picantowas far thirstier than the published figuressuggested, but unfortunately I have no concreteevidence to prove that is in fact the case. The

published figures give an Urban cycle reading of 53mpg (5.3 lt/100 km), extra urban cycle of 74 mpg(3.8 lt/100 km) and a Combined cycle average of67 mpg (4.2 lt/100 km). In the Picanto’s favour isthe fact that Dublin’s traffic can be very congestedand slow moving. On one afternoon, it took meover an hour to cover just ten miles, from the citycentre to Malahide.

Steering is electrically power assisted and isgeared to give a very comfort orientated 3.5 turnsfrom lock to lock. In spite of this low gearing, itnever felt vague or imprecise. The ride iscomfortable, even over our incredibly poor roadsurfaces. while the roadholding is good within thecar’s performance potential.

My firm impression of this latest Picanto, wasthat it is an excellent car for young unattachedpeople. It provides comfortable transportation forwork related and socialising requirements. It isalso a very good car for older married couples,whose families have grown up and left home. It is

The three round knobs below theaudio panel are the controls for the heating andventilating system. The left hand arm of thesteering wheel has additional audio relatedcontrols, while the right hand arm has controls forthe mobile telephone facilities. Controls for the exterior rear view mirrors, centrallocking and four electric windows are all located inthe driver’s door armrest. In the large open storageplace, ahead of the gearlever, there are sockets forfurther electronic attachments. In the normalmanner the left hand stalk controls the directionindicators and lights, while the right hand stalkoperates the wipers and washers.

Urban cycle fuel consumption is 38 mpg (7.4lt/100 km), stretching to 55 mpg (5.1 lt/100 km) onthe Extra urban cycle. This gives a Combined cycleaverage of 50 mpg (5.6 lt/100 km). This level ofconsumption gives exhaust emissions of 148gm/km, placing the car in the upper limits of Irishroad tax band C, with a current annual demand of€302. This surprised me, as with the high gearing,I spent a lot of my driving with between 1,000 rpmand 1,500 rpm on the tachometer, which can leadto stalling if you slow down for other traffic, thentry to accelerate again, without changing down. Toavoid this in urban traffic you may spend a lot ofthe time in second or third gear, especially if youkeep in mind the fact that maximum torque isdelivered at 1,750 rpm.

Out on the open road, the top speed of 204 kph(126 mph) is far more than the legal maximum, soyou can cruise along in comfort with plenty ofpower to spare. Acceleration from 0-100 kph takes

The instruments and drivingcontrols are laid out forconvenience and ease of use.The large instrument on the leftin the binnacle is the tachometer.It is easy to see. My onlycriticism is that it is perhaps toodetailed with markings for every100 rpm and figures for every500 rpm. The needle is currentlypointing to 800 rpm in thepicture above. Thus for 1,750rpm the needle would be up neara 10/11 o’clock position on theinstrument face. From 5,000 rpmupwards, the markings are inred.

The smaller indicator in thelower section is the enginetemperature gauge. Thematching large instrument onthe right is the speedometer,with the fuel gauge in its lowersection. The clear digital panelbetween the two shows a varietyof information, like the time, anopen door, outside airtemperature, trip and total

distance recorders, current fuelconsumption, distance to emptyand similar useful information.

In the top centre of the facia,above the two air vents, there isa very useful covered storagebox. The switch for the hazardflashers is between the two airvents.

The radio/CD is below thetwo vents and the large screenalso serves the satellitenavigation when that isoperational.

The heating/ventilatingcontrols are below the audiounit. There is another smallcovered storage space at thebottom of the stack, ahead of thegearlever. Controls for theheated, electrically adjustable,exterior rear view mirrors are onthe driver’s door, adjacent to theright hand ventilation outlet.

Switches for the four electricwindows are in the driver’s doorarmrest.

The leather covered steering

wheel has a comfortable, highquality feel and is geared to givethree turns from lock to lock.

The steering itself iselectrically power assisted and ithas a light yet positive feel at allspeeds. The upper horizontalarms of the steering wheel haveadditional controls for the audiosystem on the left and theBluetooth mobile telephonefacilities on the right.

A circular switch on the righthand side of the facia, close tothe driver’s door, controls thelights and fog lamps. In thenormal manner, the left handstalk under the steering wheeloperates the direction indicatorsand main/high beams. Amatching stalk on the right handside operates the wipers andwashers.

Included in the standardspecification are Cruise Control,rear parking sensors, satellitenavigation and Bluetoothfacilities. Both front seats adjustfor reach, height and backrestangle. The steering wheel is,likewise, reach and heightadjustable. The rear bench seatis divided 60/40 and has ISOfixfittings for child safety seats inthe two outer positions. Thecentre section of the rear seatbackrest has a folding armrest.To fold, the rear seat cushions liftup into a vertical position behindthe two front seats and thebackrests then drop into thespace thus vacated by thecushions.

Ford’s Mondeo is a large, executive size car, comparable with cars like the Mercedes-Benz E class, Audi A6 and BMW 5 series. However, where the others willcost you an arm and a leg, the Mondeo comes to the market very reasonably priced. It looses nothing in terms of comfort, refinement, performance, drivingpleasure, or levels of equipment, when compared to the others mentioned. The range also offers the choice of saloon, hatchback and estate body styles.Ford is also demonstrating its heritage with this latest model by offering some state of the art engine technology.

Inthe not too distant past, cars of this type wouldhave had two and a half, or three litre engines,to deliver an appropriate level of performance.The car comes with Ford’s ECOnetictechnology, designed to improve fuel economyand reduce exhaust emissions. It is verysuccessful on this score, as exhaust emissionsare just 114 gm/km, allowing this big,comfortable, refined executive car, to fall intoIrish road tax band A. Top speed is said to be190 kph (118 mph), which is well above thenational speed limit, while its 0-100 kphacceleration time is 11.9 seconds, which whilenot in the super performance category, isnever going to embarrass you in normal daily

driving, be it out on the open road, or withinthe limits of city and suburban traffic.

Its fuel consumption, according to EUtesting standards, is equally impressive. Onthe Urban cycle it is 56 mpg (5.0 lt/100 km),stretching to 72 mpg (3.9 lt/100 km) on theExtra urban cycle. This gives a Combined cycleaverage of 65 mpg (4.3 lt/100 km). That isvery impressive if you take into consideration,that this is a big spacious executive car, not asmall compact economy model.

From a driving point of view, all theinstruments and controls are laid out forcomfort and ease of use. The instrumentbinnacle is under a curved hood, directly infront of the driver. The main instruments havea black background, with white lettering and

large dials. This panel can show a variety ofselectable information, like the time, trip andtotal distance recorders, current fuelconsumption, average fuel consumption,door open, seat belt unfastened etc.

At the top of the centre console, under thetwo central air vents, there are a row ofbuttons for (from left to right), windscreendemisting, rear window demisting, hazardwarning, automatic stop/start and parkingwarning sensors. The large panelimmediately below is the the radio/CD andaudio associated equipment. This has adigital panel at the top to show audioassociated information. When the audiosystem is switched off it shows the date and

Although it is a saloonmodel, the rear seat is divided60/40 to give a degree ofadaptability, in its loadcarrying abilities. The cushionlifts into a vertical positionbehind the front seats,allowing the seat backrest todrop into a horizontal position,to give a level extension to theluggage compartment floor.The limiting factor is the sizeof the opening in the bodystructure between thepassenger area and theluggage compartment. Underthe luggage floor, there is ablack polystyrene tray, withcompartments for storingsmaller items.

If the normal luggagecapacity is insufficient forspecial occasions, like familyholidays, the Mondeo cancarry up to 75 kg in a suitablecontainer on the roof. If that isinsufficient, or towing is arequirement, it can towunbraked trailers of up to 750kg in weight, or brakedtrailers/caravans of up to1800 kg. This Mondeo doesoffer a degree of versatilityand adaptability as befits amodern family executivesaloon. The large towingcapacity for braked trailers isparticularly impressiveconsidering the small capacityengine under the bonnet.

In Zetec specification thecar has a recommended retailselling price of €27,745, Astested the car came withthree optional extras, whichare very worthwhile if you canafford the small additional

driver’s door armrest hascontrols for the four electricwindows, plus the heated andfolding, electrically adjustableexterior rear view mirrors. Arotary switch on the lowerright hand side of the facia,looks after the lights,headlamp levelling and

comfortable and well shaped,with an adequate range ofadjustments. The steeringwheel adjusts for both reachand height. Thanks to its longerwheelbase, compared to theprevious model, which lifts theMondeo out of the large carsegment, into the executivebracket, there is also plenty ofkneeroom for rear seatpassengers. As in most cars
