Depending on who you ask, overall new car registrations are up between 23 and 25 percent on the same period last year. All but one of the top ten brands are reporting double-digit increases (Audi showing just 6.6 percent more registrations) — the top four being Volkswagen (+20.7%), Toyota (+27.1%), Ford (+28.6%) and Hyundai (+30.3%).The top four models in registrations are VW’s Golf, Nissan’s Qashqai, Ford’s Focus and Toyota’s Corolla, the last showing a whopping three times unit numbers so far this year.In emissions performance, the overall reductions continue, with the sub-120g/km CO2 going beyond average unit sales by a 37 percent increase over the corresponding periods, and this segment now represents two-thirds of all cars sold. Car sales healthy againAFTER the first bright signs of a recovery in the car sales trade late last year, the trend has continued through the first five months of 2014, writes Brian Byrne.

three quarters of all registrations were diesel, similar to last year. Hybrid sales have more than doubled, but to a very tiny number of 700+ while there has been a five-fold uptick in electric car registrations, but again to a tiny total of 119.Silver, black and grey remain the most popular colours, accounting for about half of all registered cars between them.Let’s hope things stay bright for the second half of 2014.

Volkswagen was the brand that kicked it off in earnest, largely because it had its own bank and could operate independently of the traditional finance providers, which tended to be the main banks under a variety of trading labels relating to individual car brands.

Up to half of all financing of VW vehicles is now done through PCPs, which typically work by putting down a deposit, ‘parking’ an agreed estimated final value figure for the car after the period (generally three years, but it can be more), and then making what are reduced repayments on the balance.

All the major distributors now offer similar schemes through their dealers, with interest rates varying mostly around whether the company has its own bank (like VW and Renault) or are using traditional banks.

Trying to go through the differences here would take up far too much time and space,

but here are a few of the key current offers.

DepositVolkswagen’s ‘Bank Solutions’ include a PCP which requires a minimum deposit of 10 percent of the car’s price. At the end of the period, there’s a choice of part-exchanging the car for a new VW vehicle, paying off the final ‘parked’ agreed value or refinancing it subject to credit approval, or returning the car to the dealer and ‘walking away’ — though that last is subject to ‘acceptable vehicle condition’ and there’s also an annual mileage limit.

Toyota’s version is its ‘Flex’ scheme, which allows a deposit of between seven and 36 percent of the on-the-road price of the car, and 37 months later similar options to other schemes apply. The Toyota deal is underwritten by Bank of Ireland Finance. Fair Wear and Tear guidelines and contract kilometres driven apply.

Ford’s ‘Options’ travel the same route, with a deposit of between ten and 30 percent required. The scheme is available on Ka, Fiesta, B-MAX, Focus, Kuga and S-MAX models. (Ford also has a ‘Swappage’ promotion going until the end of June, which offers an extra €1,500 on top of the trade-in value of your current car. It applies to Fiesta, Focus, B-MAX or C-MAX cars.)

Nissan’s ‘Go’ PCP is available on Micra from €169 a month, Note from €179/m, Juke from €199/m, Leaf from €229/m and Qashqai from €269/m. It’s a three-year period

spreaDs costHyundai Ireland’s ‘Hyundai PCP’ is available to all customers and spreads the cost of a new Hyundai over 37 months. Again, the customer pays a deposit or a part-exchange off the cost of the vehicle and the rest of the amount is financed over 37 months at a rate of 8.49 percent.

Kia’s example on a cee’d works out at €257 per month and involves a minimum deposit of 10% and maximum deposit of 30% of the retail price applies and a maximum term of 37 months applies. It’s currently available to June 30th, 2014 at participating dealers and the credit provider is Bank of Ireland Finance.

For anyone looking to use PCPs they should be aware that it is a hire purchase agreement and ownership of the car does not transfer until all financing, including the agreed minimum value, is paid off.

The standard caveat applies, no matter which scheme you go for ... do the maths, and compare and contrast like with like, to see which offers the best value and suits your pocket best.

It’s a good strong car, comfortable, pretty thrifty given its size, and looks smart. For the larger family, well worth a consideration. Price Range: €27,045-€39,645.

NIssAN QAshQAIIn the second generation, and swinging along with the trend that it was part of inventing, the SUV/crossover. For those worried that it’s bigger than its predecessor and therefore maybe more unwieldy, it’s not. It just looks more. Excellent engines, don’t forget the petrol option if your mileage is lowish, and local. You won’t be disappointed with the finish inside or out, and you can spring for all the safety and smart technology you want at not too much money extra. Price Range: €24,495-€34,995.

PEuGEot 308If there was ever a compact hatch that will impress even die-hard Golf addicts, this is it. Really good looking, really nice finish inside, really comfortable drive, and a range of engines to suit all kinds of drivers. It’s European Car of the Year too, so the German makers are really looking to their southern neighbours to see what they’re doing right. There’s a wagon version coming in June, and that makes it a very tidy family car indeed. Price Range: €18,990-€25,890.

Ford Tourneo ConneCTThis is new, and offers an alternative to the compact wagon or crossover for family use, with more space where it counts and the roughhouse durability of its van underpinnings. Really worthwhile for the out there alive and kicking all-extreme leisure people, who need to take their bikes, boards, and all the rest with them on the weekend, but require a real car the rest of the week. Not too many of you will buy here, but on the very practical Continent, they know their value. Price range: €24,100-€28,800.

MerCedes GLAWhen Mercedes-Benz decided to seriously chase the younger profile market, they decided their A-Class in its all-new ethos was the vehicle to do it with. Beginning with the compact hatch, they expanded the range with the CLA coupe saloon, and now they have the GLA with elements for the urban warrior class who like a distinctive crossover look. It doesn’t take long to warm to the GLA, which comes with a good range of engine options and a reasonably accessible price given what’s adorning the bonnet. The whole exercise is proving worthwhile. Price range: €35,800-€48,075.

MAzdA 3Mazda has been doing some serious restyling of its range over the last few years, and the latest to get the smooth and sexy treatment is the Mazda 3 compact family car. I’m of the view that it might well be cannibalising sales from its larger sibling Mazda6, but is probably doing quite well in gaining conquest sales too. There’s a choice of hatchback and saloon in the model, each with its individual differences, and both equally attractive. Needs the 1.6 diesel to arrive soon. Price range: €21,595-€31,195.

HyundAi i10My sweetheart favourite of the city cars so far this year, the new i10 is getting top reviews from all my motor writing colleagues. It now looks good, has a proven powertrain that buzzes the car along with frugality and verve. It’s a 4-seater, they don’t try to make it anything else. Like all current Hyundai products, it has a high-quality finish and a 5-year warramty. The market for small cars here is ... well ... very small, but for the single in the city or the suburban empty-nester couple, it makes a lot of sense. There’s an automatic. Price range: €11,995-€15,495.

SSangYong RextonBack in the Irish game now since last year, this Korean brand is flexing its muscles gently but gaining a following particularly in the rural areas where tough and reliable is prized. The Rexton W is the latest iteration of a large SUV which has been in the model range for as long as SsangYong was first in Ireland. Tilting at the luxury end in finish and fittings, but with very tough underpinnings and strong off-road capability, and the brand’s own 2-litre diesel. Price Range: From €34,119.

BMW 2 SeRieSMuch more than a rebadging of the old 1 Series Coupe, this is a brand new car with the potential to develop a cult following from those who like classic sports car lines with 4-passenger capability. It is arguably the best-proportioned and best looking BMW around, and is attracting attention from the smart singles who find the 3 Series has gotten a little too big for their tastes. There’s nothing girly about it, but the girls will be among the enthusiastic buyers too as the economy loosens up. Price Range: From €38,480.

BMW i3We still have a long way to go before electric cars become the mainstream, but bit by bit the idea is chipping away at the perceived difficulties of range anxiety and cost. kia SOulA second generation of a car that looks quirky (or distinctive, as I’d say) and which provides a roomy alternative to a family hatchback and yet offers similar performance to it. without looking like a van. A quiet and refined driver, and with all the Kia traits of fine quality and build, and that 7-year warranty. Think of it now as a different kind of crossover. Price range: From €24,495.

MerceDeS-benz c-claSSThe latest generation has just landed here, and represents inexorably continuing improvement from Mercedes-Benz in this particular segment. It’s the biggest seller of the marque globally, though not in Ireland. But this new one may be when the tilt from the larger E-Class to that position happens. Lighter, bigger, and there’s a hybrid as well as a smaller diesel. Price range: €37,750-€43,300 (more versions later in the year).

Super swish on the outside and lap of luxury within, it also drives with serene aplomb. Despite its size and power, a very nimble car to drive, so much so that the chauffeur may be from time to time asked to take a back seat. Price range: From €98,255.

Ford eCosPortThis is Ford’s car for the rapidly-expanding sub-compact SUV market in Europe, but adapting India/South American vehicle for Europe has taken more time than expected. I’ve driven it and I expect that it will fly the blue oval flag respectably when it does get here later in the year. But the brand has a lot of product coming into play at the moment, so it might not have been a main focus. Arrives: Summer.

Women’s car insurance costs set to riseBY PROINSIAS O’MAHONY

WOMEN’S car insurance pre-miums are set to rise nextmonth, when an EU directivebanning gender discrimina-tion for insurance comes intoplay, but young men will behoping that their costs contin-ue their recent decline.

The EU Court of Justicewas responsible for the direc-tive, with increases of be-tween 10% and 45% beingmooted for women drivers be-tween the ages of 17 and 30.The rises are expected to belower for older women.

Women have traditionallyenjoyed much cheaper car in-surance than male drivers. Arecent survey found a 21-year-old woman with a provisionallicense paid around €1,000for car insurance, comparedto almost €2,000 for a 21-year-old male learner driver.

Statistics bear out the logicbehind the price divide. Whilewomen suffer as many acci-dents as men, the cost of theseaccidents tends to be less thanthose involving men. Youngmale drivers aged 17 to 24 arefour times more likely to bekilled than females in thesame age category. Further-more, a recent UK analysis ex-amined the performance of19,000 drivers and found thatfemale drivers are 20% saferthan men, speed 12% less andbrake hard 11% less.

However, the price changesmay not be as dramatic as onemight think.

A recent survey found in-surance costs for men andwomen are already converg-ing, with insurance compa-nies increasing female insur-ance rates and decreasingmale rates in advance of theruling. Michael Horan of the

Irish Insurance Federation(IIF) said insurance compa-nies ‘did not want the EU gen-der ruling’ but ‘have to adaptto what the directive says.’

And for women, the newsisn’t all bad. Currently,women drivers in Cork andWaterford can find the cheap-est car insurance in Ireland,with a 27-year-old Cork fe-male driving a Ford Focuspaying €91 less than her Lim-erick counterpart. Cork menalso benefit – a 27-year-oldCork man driving a Volkswa-gen Passat can expect to pay€106 less than his Limerickequivalent.

Gender differentials aside,Irish insurance rates comparefavourably to British rates, ac-cording to Michael Horan.Recent figures showed the av-erage premium to be €584, hesaid, half of what is charged inBritain.

Between now and December 2nd, Ford is offering singleprice bodystyle on Mondeo – wagon, hatchback or saloon– just one price, starting at €26,995.

FORD Ireland has announceda range of offers on key mod-els that includes an extendedfive-year warranty. Under thebanner of Ford’s ‘Big Four’,customers are invited to visittheir local Ford dealer to availof the offers over the week-ends leading up to December2nd.

The offers on the their top-selling models - Fiesta Focusand Mondeo - include free 16-inch alloys, front fogs, premi-um mats and upgraded con-sole on the Ford Focus; singleprice bodystyle on Mondeo:wagon, hatchback or saloonjust one price starting at€26,995.

Ford is also introducingFordOptions, a new financepackage that helps customerspurchase their car with the se-curity of a guaranteed mini-mum future value. The flexi-ble finance programme allowsthe customer to agree withtheir Ford dealer how muchto pay as an upfront depositand/or trade in, in addition tothe term and monthly repay-ments.

At the end of the term, thecustomer has a few options: 1To renew their car with a newmodel; 2 return their car withnothing further to pay; 3 re-tain the car once the agreed fi-nal payment has been made.

A typical deal under For-dOptions for a new FiestaStyle 1.2 three-door model (onthe road price from €15,136)could see monthly paymentsof €167 once an agreed de-posit / trade in is factored in.

Trade-in bonus

THE Mazda Trade-In Bonuspromotion is back. The Japan-ese manufacturer is now of-fering up to €3,500 trade-inallowance on a new Mazdaregistered in January 2013,easing the cost of changewhen trading up to a new car.

The trade-in bonus al-lowance starts from up to€1,500 for a new Mazda2, upto €2,000 for the Mazda3 andMazda5 models, with up to€3,500 allowance availableon the current Mazda6 model.

The brand’s best-seller con-tinues to be Mazda3 whichhas been refreshed and updat-ed for 2013. The Sport SE isnow available in a four-doorsaloon. It features a 1.6 com-mon-rail diesel engine, emitsjust 115g/km C02 and has im-proved fuel economy of 4.3L/100kms (65mpg).

Seat’s new Cupra

SEAT’S new Ibiza Cupra inproduction form has barelychanged from the conceptshown at Beijing last April.

The car offers a sprint capa-bility to 100 km/h of 6.9 sec-onds, powered by a 180hp 1.4TSI petrol engine, with a fuelconsumption of just under48mpg equivalent. Transmis-sion is a 7-speed DSG.

RHD versions will be avail-able from January. No Irishprice or arrival date yet.

Favouring Audi Finance

ONE in five Audi buyers areusing Audi Finance to buytheir cars in Ireland, up from17.7 per cent of customers ayear ago.

Some €30 million has beenprovided in vehicle financepackages to Irish customersfor the first seven months ofthe year alone.

The company says the ac-ceptance rate for applicationsis 85 per cent, and nearly halfof customers are using theAudi Ireland Personal Con-tract Plan.

More safety technology

THE market for advanceddriver safety systems is ex-pected to increase ten-fold by2020 because of new tougherstandards to be introduced in2014.

At the moment the marketis worth €1bn a year, butFriedrich Angerbauer, headof Continental’s AdvancedDriver Assistance Systems(ADAS) unit, expects that tobe worth €8-10bn in eightyears’ time.

He told Automotive Newsthat the Euro NCAP upcom-ing requirements for anti-col-lision and pedestrian safetywill boost the business area.

Distractions other thantexting while driving every bit as dangerous

BY BRIAN BYRNETHOUGH the road safety spotlight has recently been on the new regulations which ban texting and emailing while driving, there are many other actions in a car which are seriously distracting.

Liberty Insurance has decided to highlight some of them with a survey of Irish drivers, and has come up with a result that shows almost half of us are doing stuff that takes our eyes off the road for longer than is safe.Much of it we do without thinking, such as changing the channel on our radio. Hey, haven’t we been doing that since the first radio was installed in a car in the 1920s? Yep, but that doesn’t make the process non-distractive. Indeed, the choice and complexity of our entertainment systems nowadays makes it much more so than when I started driving in the 1960s. Plus, we’re stroking and poking at screens today while travelling an awful lot faster and on much busier roads.I’ll leave to one side the issues we’re almost deaf to now because of repetitive warnings — talking on the phone (9% of respondents admitted to it), texting (4%). But what about eating? Liberty Insurance’s survey pulled in a 9% result here, which I personally think is on the conservative side. And, again, we’ve been doing it for decades (and fiddling with cigarettes and lighters too). But it isn’t a very safe process unwrapping a chocolate bar at 120km/h while trying to steer and concentrate on the

road at the same time.It takes about ten seconds to pick it up, undress it, crack a square and get it into mouth and tuck the remainder safely into some receptacle near the shifter. In that time you’ll have travelled more than 300 metres, most of it not being aware of much that’s going on out there. Much the same applies to dealing with sandwiches, breakfast baguettes, and the danger is compounded if you happen to spill some of that hot coffee as you try one-handed to get through that changing traffic light and suddenly have to brake.Liberty Insurance found that 46% of respondents admitted to some of the above and more habits while driving. Though only 3% of them considered themselves to be bad drivers.In recent RSA research, driver distraction plays a role in 20 to 30% of all road collisions. In Liberty’s research, 13% of drivers stated they engaged specifically in digital distractions behind the wheel.Liberty is calling on Irish drivers to look at their own behaviour and make a change.
