Keeping the young ones safeTHE festive season is when cityfolk leave their urban dwellingsand go back to their hometowns.

As adults are usually the oneswho grew up in the kampung, their children will need to adapt

to the new environment. As ruralareas are less hectic, parents cansometimes get too complacentand forget that accidents canhappen anywhere.

Back in the city, parents arerather strict in limiting themovement of their children butin the kampung, many would lettheir guard down. One commonexample is when parents let theirchildren and teenagers go aroundthe kampung on motorcycles.

Perhaps due to theirinexperience, these parentsbelieve that riding a motorcyclearound the kampung posesthe same risk as children goingaround on bicycles.

According to statistics from theMalaysian Institute of Road SafetyResearch, 75 children up to theage of 15 were killed and another192 were seriously injured in roadaccidents at residential areas in2008.

Another study shows thatfrom 2006 to 2008 most fatalroad accidents involving childrenoccurred between 4pm and 6pm.In 2008, 43% of the children werekilled in accidents involvingmotorcycles.

Parents should realise that theirgrandfathers motorcycle is not

a toy. Motorcycles, in any form, can be deadly in the hands of aninexperienced rider.

Many of these young daredevilsdo not wear helmets and manyparents do not bat an eyelidwhen their children ride around

without a crash helmet or, moreimportantly, a motorcycle license.

This coming Hari Raya season,we would like to get parents torestrict their children from goingon these joyrides, which cansometimes be fatal.

    Avoiding trafficjams this Raya

The right time to changeONE thing Malaysians do wellis celebrating our festivities.Soon, Muslims will begin

their fasting month Ramadan. The fasting month will be

followed by one of Malaysiaslargest festive celebrations HariRaya Aidilfitri.

Malaysians enjoy preparingto celebrate Hari Raya and whilesome are content with getting

new items for the house, you mayfind yourself interested in gettinga new ride instead.

This is one of the best timesto upgrade your vehicle. It iscommon for car companies to giveout amazing offers and packagesin conjunction with festivals.

These usually appeal to anyindividual and you might justfind yourself doing a doubletake at some offers. While somelook at how much of discounta car company can offer, otherssearch for more comprehensiveoffers such as free maintenancepackages or purchases with low orzero downpayment.

While a free maintenancepackage helps to lower the costof ownership for three to fiveyears, a purchase with low orzero downpayment is a favouriteamong those who wish to replacean old car that is still being paidoff.

Car companies often kick offthe sale of their new models withoffers and discounts to promote its

sales to potential buyers. It may also be worthwhileto wait for such offers if a carcompany does not immediatelygive such packages, as theymay do so after a few monthsdepending on the status of theirsales and stock.

Some research on your partmay reveal the companys patternin offering sales and packages. It might be wise to hold off apurchase to wait and see if abetter deal comes up within a fewweeks.

Buying a car can be exciting butit should be tackled with properconsideration of your needs, howmuch you can afford and the typesof deals on offer.

Do not buy out of impulse andrisk getting something you willregret buying. Instead, properresearch and patience will proverewarding in getting your newride.

BEFORE embarking on yourjourney, give the highwayoperators a call or check theirwebsite for offers or traffic timeadvisory to ensure a smoother andquicker drive.

This could be the easiest wayto ensure your trip back to yourhometown during the Hari Rayacelebration is a smooth one. However, many fail to do this andend up in the massive traffic jamsthat our highways are famous for.

It must be rememberedthat festive seasons will see anincrease in the number of roadusers from the usual 1.1 millionusers a day to 1.4 million users aday, a 30% increase.

By following the traffic timeadvisory, congestion can bemanaged better and if possible

avoided completely. The other reason is to find out

what discounts are offered bytoll operators during the festiveseason.

    Some operators offer discounts

during the highways off-peakperiod to encourage more users totravel during non-peak hours.

    Getting a tyre changeR

EGARDLESS of how advancedor classy your car maybe, the biggest factor that

determines your control of the caris the tyres.

You should know how tomaintain tyres when the timecomes and not hesitate to replacethem when required.

Before embarking on your tripback to an interstate hometownfor Hari Raya, it is best to check onthe condition of your car tyres.

Unfortunately, many driversdisregard the importance of theircar tyres and the technologybehind them. Tyres are theoutcome of high-tech studies and

    research.In 2012, the American car

industry consumed more thanRM120bil worth of replacementtyres and globally there was aconsumption of RM600bil ofaftermarket tyres.

If your tyres are worn outand you are looking to get somereplacement tyres, here are sometips to help you get started.

    1. Choose the right tyre shopAsk friends or relatives to

recommend a tyre shop theyfrequent. Recommendations willminimise the risk of unfair sales.People who offer services suchas tyre-fitting and balancing are

good only if they have a proventrack record. So if you knowsomeone who has had satisfactoryservice, it may be worth your timeto check them out.

    2. Read your manualYour manual will provide you

information on the proper tyresize for your vehicle.

If you have not changed yourtyres before, get replacement tyres

Sport GL is priced at RM151,227.60

    (prices quoted are without roadinsurance).

Mitsubishis two-year freemaintenance package offerscomplementary maintenanceon lubricant for parts and labourcosts. The package also offers newMitsubishi owners a hassle-freedrive and peace of mind.

Some of the free maintenanceparts included are fuel filters, engine oil, air cleaners, brakefluid, coolant, differential oil andtransmission oil (based on therecommended scheduled service).

The Pajero Sport VGT and theMitsubishi Mirage won the firstprize in the 2012 Asian AutoFuel-Efficiency Awards in the

Premium SUV and the CompactCars category respectively. TheMitsubishi ASX, meanwhile, wasawarded the most fuel-efficientcompact SUV in the 2.0-litreCompact SUV category at the 2011Asian Auto Fuel-Efficiency Awards.

of the same size.Changing the diameter might

effect the speedometer calibrationand changing to lower profiledtyres might affect how your carperforms on the road.

    3. Be wary of cheap tyres

There are often shops thatsell tyres at much lower prices.Although most are parallelimporters that have managed toget lower tax for their tyres, there

are also shops that attempt to sellused tyres at a lower price.

Tyres have a six-year lifespan, which means you should not buytyres that been shelved for morethan six years.

To identify how old a tyre is,look for the DOT letters, whichwill be followed by four numbers. The first two denote the numberof the week and the last twodenote the year the tyre was

manufactured. For example, 1712means the tyre was produced inthe 17th week of 2012.

    4. Do not mix and matchIt is best not to mix and match

tyres as every tyre has its owntread pattern that gives differentroad performance. If you must, change in pairs, that is, either thefront pair or the rear pair.

    5. Know your tyre pressure

Ensure that tyres are properlyinflated according to the manual.

    6. Efficient tyresNowadays, tyre companies

have the technology to producetyres that offer high grip for safetybut lower rolling resistance thatcan help reduce fuel consumption. If your car is mainly used for dailydriving, these eco tyres are a goodinvestment to consider.

Always check your tyres before a long drive.

Tyres have a lifespan of six years.

The newly launched Toyo NanoEnergy 3 tyre is specifically designed for sedans andcompact cars.

The latest Mirage sets green targetsI

N its bid to change peoplesperception of its products,Mitsubishi is steering away from

motor sport-oriented products tosomething more practical a goodcity car.

The Mirage has a big fan basein Japan and its rapid sales in thecountry serves as a testament tothis.

The world is facing an energycrisis and people are becomingmore aware of the importance ofgoing green.

Mitsubishi has realised this andhas wheeled out the new Mirage,a compact four-door hatchbackwith a three-cylinder engine thatconsumes minimal fuel.

The 3A92 engine has only threecylinders in its aluminium bodyand it kicks out 77hp.

To achieve that, you need to revit up to 6,000rpm. The engine feelsso light and getting to 6,000rpm iseasier than you think.

The best part is that althoughthe Mirage has a three-cylinderengine, the quality of its interior isthree times better than a Peroduacar.

The noise, vibration andharshness level is very low for athree-cylinder engine.

Our test unit came withthe continuously variabletransmission gearbox, whicheasily achieved impressive rpmfigures.

Although it is not as quiet as a

car with a four-cylinder engine, the Mirage offers quite a punch.

    Mitsubishis vast rally

experience is put to use whentuning the Mirages suspension. For such a light, softly sprungcar, the handling dynamics of theMirage is surprisingly good.

The front tyres tend toundersteer if your turn-in is tooabrupt, but do it well and you willsee how remarkable the Mirage is.

Our test unit came equippedwith some RalliArt specials, including a complete bodykit, arear spoiler, leather interior and adouble DIN Kenwood head unit.

When we were testing theMirage on the roads and also athigher speeds on the highway, itsfuel consumption was only at alow 8.2L/100km.

When we drove at regularspeeds around the city, withminimal change in our drivingbehaviour, the Mirages fuelconsumption went down to7.3L/100km.

In short, the Mirage is fuelefficient, has an adequatelypowerful engine, turns wellaround sharp corners and, mostimportantly, it has an impressiveprice tag.

Currently, the Mirage GS ispriced at RM64,000 while theGL is set at around RM60,100 butfor the upcoming festive season,Mitsubishi is offering a cash rebateof up to RM6,000.

The Mirage is an economical city car.

Well-equipped interior of the Mirage. The Mirage has a start/stop button.

Crossing boundariesCARS nowadays bank heavilyon styling and design becausethey make good selling

    points.The new Volvos, for example,

are not just boxes with a newpower train, and are still as quickas other makes.

One of the interesting optionsavailable from Volvo is the VolvoV40 Cross Country T5.

V40 indicates that it is ahatchback, and Cross Countryindicates its ability to withstandwater crossings while T5represents the same tuned four-cylinder turbocharged engineused in the V40 T5 hatchback.

Designed by an Americannamed Chris Benjamin, the samedesign style used on the V60 hasbeen applied to this smaller VolvoC30 platform-based hatchback.

The main lights in the frontand rear are a standout and thesculpted hood brings out thestylish designs of this Swedishstunner.

The V prefix to this model hasconfused some into thinking ofit as another variant of Volvosstation wagon line. On thecontrary, the V40 is actually ahatchback.

The V40s boot offers more than400 litres of space in standardformat, and is expandable to 1,032litres with the rear seats foldedflat.

The dashboard sports Volvossignature design of simplicity. Thefloating centre console gives youspace to store things out of sightas well.

The lighting system of the V40offers a whole new experience. There are seven colours you canchoose from within its ambient

    lighting system.The instrument panel is

monopolised by a thin-film-transistor high-resolution LCDscreen, which has three differentskins elegance, eco andperformance.

The gauges shown dependon the skin. For example, inperformance mode, you have apower meter than informs youhow much remaining power youhave for you to push your carfurther.

The eco skin highlights fuel-saving gauges such as current andaccumulated fuel-consumptionfigures. The elegance skin, on theother hand, has a nice and calminglook.

The test unit came with huge19-inch Alecto wheels that hadglossy matte black inserts. Our

advice is to skip this option or anyof the 19-inch wheel options andstick to the 17-inch bog standardalloys. You get a better ride qualityand it gives your V40 a better look.

    The 19-inch options are not

recommendable for city driving. The thin 225/40 R19 fails to absorbany shock taken from driving intopotholes and may cause someserious damage to your wheels.

    The interior is quite compact

but this is a small hatchback andeven with the new and slimmerVolvo seats, average-sizedMalaysians might find the rear abit small.

The car is well suited forchildren. A remote child-lockbutton on the drivers door panelis available and you can get theBLIS blind spot warning, CitySafety, traction control and manymore additions.

The boot floor can be hinged upto cut the boot size in half, whichis good to store smaller items thatyou want to prevent from movingabout when travelling.

In terms of the drive, Volvohas a better grasp on ride andhandling now. The steering hasbetter control and the suspensionstops the rear from swaying toomuch.

You still need to be carefularound corners but good controlof the car will prove its ability tohandle twists and turns at a goodspeed.

The brakes on the V40 areimpressive and may take somegetting used to if your previousride was a less powerful car.

Placing your foot on the brakepedal lightly will immediatelyproduce an effect. Such stoppingperformance is required becausethe V40 Cross Country is a fast car.

Fuel consumption can bequite high although if you driveconsistently below 100kmph, fuelconsumption can be as low as8L/100km.

The V40 Cross-Country has a high ground clearance.

    A classy Volvo interior.
