Mother Post News
Stoughton, Wisconsin Volume 3, Issue 52 September 2015
Comrades,
Our Memorial Park fundraiser was a huge success. We had beautiful weather and a great
turnout. Rumor has it that we even made Utica nervous. I want to thank all the volunteers
for their time and hard work in making it so. Thanks also to American Legion Post 59 for
making this a team effort. Donations of food and silent auction items made it possible to
raise a total of $7,400 towards this grand project.
On Sept. 12 at 11:00 hrs. I will be hosting the VFW Annual Pig Roast. This event has been a
tradition at our post for decades and is one of our most popular events of the year. A signup
sheet will soon be posted on the bulletin board for the three work shifts. I really enjoy doing
it but I need a lot of help to pull it off and make a little money for our Post.
At this year's National VFW Convention some big changes were made affecting the Women's
Auxiliary. For generations these wives and mothers have supported their Veterans with all
their hearts and souls. Most posts, including ours, wouldn't be where they are today without
these ladies. For several years a Men's Auxiliary has been struggling to get off the
ground. Now the By-laws were changed to combine the men and women into one
organization and will be called the Veteran of Foreign Wars Auxiliary. Now anyone with a
direct tie to a VFW member is eligible to join. Big changes are coming.
Even though the summer is going by too fast, it has been the most pleasant one in several
years. This is a good time of the year for recruiting new members. There are thousands of
past and present service members who are eligible to join our distinguished
organization. Let's find them and sign them up.
Next meeting is on 15 Sept. at 18:30 hrs. See you there!
Regards,
Patrick Nowlin Comrades,

President Edee March
Greetings
We are now known as Auxiliary Post 328. The National Auxiliary is working with the VFW on legal
issues and has asked that we be patient. This is great news for the auxiliary as we can now support our female
veterans by asking their husbands and sons to join! This will help the VFW as a whole and we will be able to
reach more veterans in need with their help. If you know anyone that fits that criteria please send them our way!
I am also excited to announce that I will be attending an instructional meeting in Fort Atkinson at the
end of August. This will allow me a better understanding of my presidential duties and inform me of the most
recent changes to the National Auxiliary policies. I am looking forward to being a better leader for the
Auxiliary.
Our fundraising event for the Stoughton Area Veterans Memorial Park was very successful. Thank you
to everyone who donated their time to help this great cause.
We have quite a few calendars for sale as well, they are beautiful and showcase our fine men and
women in the military.
Sister Judy Rabe is doing well after her hip replacement and Sister Linda Schmidt had surgery on
August 26th. Please continue to keep this ladies in your thoughts for a speedy recovery. If you know of anyone
else who needs an extra prayer or in need of help please let us know!

FUND RAISER AT VFW A SUCCESS
Although the planning and organizing for the fund raiser for the Veterans Memorial
Park started weeks ago, the work began in earnest on Friday, August 8, when eight
volunteers met at the VFW to shuck 300 ears of sweet corn, which had been
donated by Eugster's Farm Market.
At 7:00 the next day, additional volunteers set up the tents and cooking equipment.
In addition, several tables, containing more the 60 items for the silent auction, were
also put in place. These items were all donated by local merchants, members, and
friends. Sherrie Barrett spearheaded this very successful donation drive.
At 11:00, volunteers began serving the meal consisting of brats, hot dogs,
hamburgers, sweet corn, baked beans, coleslaw and dessert. After the meal,
customers visited the popular silent auction area to submit their bids. Youngsters
enjoyed the bouncy house located at the back of the VFW lot.
At 4:00, the winning bids were read off and the top bidders contacted. The winner
of the 50/50 raffle, more than $200, was also contacted.
Profits from food sales, silent auction, t shirt sales and private donations totaled
more than $6,000.
The VFW team responsible for this fund raiser deserve a pat on the back.

The Haunting
By Lenny Ellis
To all you heroes of Viet Nam who came back with mental bombs.
How deep is your pain as
soil absorbs the rain.
And yet you preserve.
Your honor still contained.
The scars are deep.
At night you weep.
You fear the sleep
Which brings the dreams.
Your wives, families and friends
try to understand.
However, they cannot for alone
you fought in a distant land.
From day to day you live in the
bowels of fear, pain and terror
snapping at you like a gargantuan
jowls.
You slip, bob and weave to
escape the domain.
The memory of war which your
memories contain.
The pain of not living, of
losing control.
Your fate being sealed, not
knowing your soul.
You pace, you smoke, you go for
walks.
You drink a beer
with tears of anguish.
Yet….you can’t talk.
About the horrors, the terror too.
Sometimes at night it visits you.
You toss and turn
And then you sweat.
You wake up screaming
At false regret,
The war is over and yet it’s not.
It’s those dammed ghosts
Which can’t stop.
You hear the voices, the mortar
shells.
The bullets fly as fast as hell.
The smoke and fires, they’re also
there.
The stench of bodies everywhere.
Your buddies shout but you can’t
hear.
You’re too busy and full of fear.
“Oh, please dear god don’t let me
die. It’s much too soon!”
Aloud you cry.
You’re too pumped up, and so you
fight. With all your might and full
of fright.
Yet…those ghosts keep coming
night after night.
You think you’ll lose your mind, if
you dare to drop your guard.
You think you’ll hurt someone,
how vigilant you are.
You look for options to escape, the
mental stress that accumulates.
It tears your heart out to even
ponder about those options, and so,
you wander.
Some take a drink, some take pills
Some pull triggers, and end up
on boot hill.
But some of you are wise enough
to ask for help, although it’s tough.
But believe you me, I shit you not.
There are people around who
haven’t forgot.
Of how you fought.
Full of terror, wounds, screams,
and sweats is what you bought and
paid for.
So tell your stories and end the
dreams
Which wake you up in silent
screams.
And don’t forget that you survived
the fiercest battle of your life.
Strong and brave you’re still alive.
Talk to someone who was there, so
you can bare your hidden terror.
Let some light in for your own
sake.
Don’t put it off.
Your Life’s at stake!
End the misery.
End the dreams.
End the terror, and those silent
screams.

A Little Humor
Damned Sniper
General Baldwin had barely arrived in the forward area when a sniper's bullet removed a button from his shirt. He threw himself to the ground in terror. The men stood around with the greatest unconcern. The general yelled at a passing sergeant. "Hey, isn't somebody going to kill that damned sniper?" The sergeant looked down at the general and replied: "I guess not, general. We're scared that if we kill him the enemy will replace him with somebody who really knows how to shoot."
How to get a good night sleep
By the time a Marine pulled into a little town, every hotel room was taken. "You've got to have a room somewhere," he pleaded. "Or just a bed, I don't care where." "Well, I do have a double room with one occupant, a Navy guy," admitted the manager, "and he might be glad to split the cost. But to tell you the truth, he snores so loudly that people in adjoining rooms have complained in the past. I'm not sure it'd be worth it to you." "No problem," the tired Marine assured him. "I'll take it." The next morning the Marine came down to breakfast bright-eyed and bushy-tailed. "How'd you sleep?" Asked the manager. "Never better." The manager was impressed. No problem with the other guy snoring, then?" "Nope, I shut him up in no time." Said the Marine. "How'd you manage that?" asked the manager. "He was already in bed, snoring away, when I came in the room," the Marine explained. "I went over, gave him a kiss on the cheek, said, 'Goodnight, beautiful,' and he sat up all night watching me."
Cargo plane in trouble A military cargo plane, flying over a populated area, suddenly loses power and starts to nose down. The pilot tries to pull up, but with all their cargo, the plane is too heavy. So he yells to the soldiers in back to throw things out to make the plane lighter. They throw out a pistol. “Throw out more!” shouts the pilot. So they throw out a rifle. “More!” he cries again. They heave out a missile, and the pilot regains control. He pulls out of the dive and lands safely at an airport. They get into a jeep and drive off. Pretty soon they meet a boy on the side of the road who’s crying. They ask him why he’s crying and he says “A pistol hit me on the head!” They drive more and meet another boy who’s crying even harder. Again they ask why and the boy says, “A rifle hit me on the head!” They apologize and keep driving. They meet a boy on the sidewalk who’s laughing hysterically. They ask him, “Kid, what’s so funny?” The boy replies, “I sneezed and a house blew up!”
