The Nutcracker returnsStageWorksProjects will

present two

performances on

Saturday, Dec. 5

BILL LIVICKUnified Newspaper Group

StageWorks Projec tsreturns with two perfor-mances of the NutcrackerBallet the first Saturdayin December at part of thecity’s Victorian Holidayweekend.

StageWorks Projects’Nutcracker is a perennialholiday favorite in its 21styear in Stoughton.

“All our productionsare a labor of love,” saidStageWorks board presi-dent Dave Gasner. “The

Nutcracker is one we holdespecially dear. It’s a magi-cal, classic story and anopportunity for dancers toconnect with children dur-ing an enchanted time ofyear.”

StageWorks is proud toprovide an opportunity forgifted area dancers to per-form roles that they wouldnot have a chance to do inother companies that bringin established profession-als to fill the main roles, artistic director ColeenKehl said. Dancers aredrawn from throughoutDane County and beyondand include many in pre-professional programs.

“The dancers we use

bring a delightful freshnessto the roles they dance,”Kehl explained. “Theirprofessionalism and tal-ent makes them a joy towatch.”

The production show-cases lavish costumes ofvelvet and other luxuriousfabrics in rich, jewel tones.Kehl sa id StageWorkshas invested “between

$50,000 and $75,000” inthe costumes used for theshow, including tutus from

Grishko, a dancewear com-pany that provides tutus forthe famed Bolshoi Ballet inMoscow.

The StageWorks’ ver-sion of the Nutcrackeralso features an alternativetreatment of Mother Gingerand her Bon Bons.

“Renamed Mother Lenaand her Krumkake (Nor-wegian cookies), (the char-

acters) are a fun tribute toStoughton’s strong Norwe-gian heritage,” Kehl said.

The staging of the bal-let keeps the running timeto about 90 minutes, shortenough for small childrento stay engaged.

The ballet is staged everyother year in rotation witha StageWorks’ original bal-let version of A ChristmasCarol.

Kehl explained that afterperforming the Nutcrackerfor 20 years, StageWorkswas “looking for a newchallenge, but didn’t wantto abandon a ballet thataudiences love so much.”Alternating the two balletswas the perfect solution, she said.

Tickets are $14 for bothchildren and adults and areusually available up to theday of performance. Thereare two performances, 1:30p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Satur-day, Dec. 5, at the Stough-ton High School Audito-rium. Tickets are availableby calling Stoughton Cen-ter for the Performing Arts

at 873-0717, at stoughton-performingarts.com, or atthe door.

She suffered mul-tiple fractures of her legs, left hip, pelvis, neck and arm, internal bleeding and ablood clot in her lung that has requiredseveral surgeries, with more to come.

Rachel Langenohl, vice presidentof Kids-4-Kids charity organizing theevent, said they are asking people todonate to help offset medical bills for thefamily. She said MLCS has offered tomatch up to $7,000 raised at the event.

Christmas music from the Gille/Farris family will be playing through-out the day while people can enjoy ahot cocoa bar with toppings, ornament-making, cookie decorating stations andother activities. There will be also be aspot where visitors can make a Christ-mas card for the Reynolds family, andfamilies can also take a photo by an old-fashioned sleigh.

Kids-4-Kids was established by localfamilies in Stoughton who wanted tohelp other families facing difficult cir-cumstances while spreading the spiritof giving in the community. Its firstevent was a garage sale two years ago to

benefit Ella Hembrook, now 9 years old,who underwent radiation treatments inBoston for a brain tumor.

Hembrook, whose condition remainsstable, will be at the Family Fun Dayselling bracelets that she made andteaching other kids how to make them.Langenohl said kids play a lead role inplanning and carrying out the event.

(Their) hearts are so large and openat this point in their lives, and we wantto continue to foster that spirit of givingand love,” Langenohl said. “We hopebeing a part of this will mean they turninto very compassionate adults whoreach out to those in need.”
