Courtyard Estates of Peoria Supports 2012 Walk to End Alzheimer’s Submitted by Amanda Hendricks, Executive Director

The 2012 Walk to End Alzheimer’s was held October 7th and Team Courtyard Estates arrived in their vibrant purple t-shirts reading “We Walk to Remem-ber”. The team consisted of residents, employees and family members of the Peoria Retirement Community.

“Alzheimer’s is a horrible disease and all too many people are affected by it across the United States and in our own community” stated Hendricks, Execu-tive Director for Courtyard Estates of Peoria. She continued, “The Alzheimer’s Association is a great organization that offers resources and support to all those affected. We are glad to be a part of such an amazing walk so that we can help make a difference in the future for those affected by this awful disease.”

Participants of the walk carried differ-ent colors of flower pinwheels, with each color representing how the disease is or has effected them; Blue flowers for those with Alzheimer’s, Yellow for those caregivers, purple flowers for those who have lost someone to the disease and orange for those who support the cause.

“I think the most heart wrenching part of the walk is looking around at all the colors of pinwheels and realizing how many people are directly affected by Alzheimer’s” Stated Ashley Steward,

It is estimated that nearly 5.1 million Americans have Alzheimer’s. Alzheim-er’s is not a normal part of aging, but as you age the risk for developing the disease rises. The National Institute on Aging indicates that the prevalence of the disease doubles every five years beyond the age of 65. Alzheimer’s is a progressive disease that worsens over-time. While Alzheimer’s does not have a current cure, there are treatments available for those that show symptoms. These treatments can temporarily slow the symptoms and improve quality of life for not only those with the disease, but their families and caregivers.

“While the cure does not exist, the research continues in hope that some-day there will be a cure and we will know and understand more about this disease” stated Hendricks, Executive Director at Courtyard Estates of Peoria. “Until then, the resources and the support systems remain to help those

affected find relief and hope. Courtyard Estates of Peoria will continue to sup-port those resources like the Alzheimer’s Association.”

Communication among members is vital to the MBRA mission. An obvi-ous example is for communications regarding security issues, such as reports of crime incidents. Another is to alert members to issues likely to be of interest to them, such as an item on the City Council agenda of particular relevance to our neighborhood. A third example might be a reminder regarding an event such as a meeting, holiday gathering, or hanging of the holiday greens.

We know of many instances when neighbors have regretted that they did not remember an event or did not know about an issue that needed their attention.

We do have means of communicating such information to members, including our newsletter and membership meet-ings. Sometimes, however, the informa-tion comes to us without sufficient time to use those avenues of communication, or a second reminder is worthwhile. In

those circumstances it is useful to have faster ways to get the information to you, and for many people a good option is email.

We are considering making the newslet-ter available digitally, posting a regular calendar of events, as well as a message center on a rejuvenated MBRA website. We would like to be able to send email no-tices when each issue and posting is made.

When we have asked for members’ email addresses in the past the response has been somewhat limited. Some members were not regular users of email, and some told us that they didn’t want their address to be distributed widely because that would bring them more “junk” mail. As time passes it seems that more of us are becoming comfortable with using email regularly. Nevertheless, even the list we maintain for sending out “security alerts” still has less than 40 addresses on it.

I want to encourage all members and interested parties to give us their email address for our database for the pur-pose of improving communication. We send messages as “blind copies,” so that the addresses of recipients are not made available to other recipients. We will not share our list of addresses with other organizations, businesses, or other members without specific permission. This is another way you can contribute to improving quality of life in the Moss Bradley neighborhood.

Hanging of the Greens

Saturday, November 19 9:00 a.m. Ed Tarbuck and Joanne Bannon’s home at 1705 W Moss Ave

Get in the holiday spirit with friends and neighbors by joining in the annual Hanging of the Greens!

Weather permitting, we’ll meet on Saturday, November 17th at 9:30 a.m. at 1705 W Moss (Ed Tarbuck and Joanne Bannon’s home). Remember to bring work gloves, small wire clippers and, if possible, a sturdy ladder (6’ minimum, 8’ preferred). Trucks are also greatly appreciated for green delivery around the neighborhood. Lunch follows at Ed and Joanne’s for all volunteers!

St. Mark S.M.A.R.T. Kids Submitted by Pat Nedza

As you may have noticed, St. Mark S.M.A.R.T. Kids are back on the streets picking up trash in the neighborhood. Unfortunately we are not able to go out every Monday, but hopefully you notice after we have been out. We are recycling aluminum cans. If you have cans to donate, you can bring them to the school or call the office to ar-range for us to pick them up.

November 4th we will be having a Kindergarten Round-up for students who will be entering Kindergarten in the Fall of 2013. The Open House will take place from 10 to 11 a.m. Our Kindergarten teacher, Laurie Gilbert, will be on hand to answer any questions and give you a brief overview of our program. Coffee, juice and donuts will be served. If you are planning to come, please call the school office at 676-7131.

St. Mark’s longest standing tradition the “Stunt Show” will take place on Friday, November 9th at 7 p.m. and Saturday, November 10th at 2 p.m. and a dinner show at 6:30 p.m. Mothers of our students and “Pros” perform skits to the theme “Tonight is Gonna Be a Good Night”. The cost is $5 for the Friday show and the Saturday 2 p.m. show. The dinner show on Saturday is $10. Tick-ets will be sold at the door.

November 17th will once again bring a little friendly competition to the St. Mark Gym-Souper Trivia Night. A night of soup and a trivia contest will begin at 5:30 p.m. Bring a team and join the fun!

We would like to wish our neighbors a very Blessed Thanksgiving! Enjoy time with family and friends!

How do we look to those passing by?Observations ... questions ... hopes ... concernsCompiled by Marjorie Klise 

Winston Churchill once observed that we build build-ings, then buildings build us. Simply put, we are formed by our surroundings.

And that got me wondering about the Moss-Bradley neighborhood. Were people, when they moved here, already the friendly, generous and imaginative folks that they are? Or did our homes have an influence?

The diversity of our people is obvious, from our occupa-tions, our skin color, or political preferences, our ages and our talents, but the overwhelming similarities can-not be missed.

We cooperate…hanging of the greens, summer street sale, holiday celebrations, etc.

We are generous…greenway support, head shaving (and yes, we had that) and both local and national charitable causes.

We are friendly…welcome committee, large parties, small cook-outs and happy hours.

We accept responsibility…as board members, commis-sion members, council members, and block captains.

We jump in to help…our newsletter has been valiantly led by Melissa, then Kelly and now Stephen and Carolina…with Skip always doing the labels.

We mourn…for the many good people who have died or gone to new locations, and are never forgotten and often remembered.

So, maybe good people just like the way our inner city homes hug us and stimulate us to be better people than we might otherwise be.

The November 18 program guest group is the Illinois Central Jazz Train. The Illinois Central Jazz Train, directed by Larry Harms, will play a variety of mu-sic, with most of the tunes consisting of selections composed by Duke Ellington and Thelonious Monk.

The Central Illinois Jazz Society House Band will perform during the first set, which will begin at 6:00 p.m. The Jazz Train will start their set at 7:15 p.m.

Our programs are in The Starting Gate Banquet Room, located in Landmark Rec-reation Center, 3225 N. Dries Lane, Peoria.
