Reflection on neighborhood events over the past year and planning for the next year lead once again to the question “What makes this a good place to live?” There are, of course, many answers to the question, but one important answer is the willingness of residents to pitch in and help with this week’s or this month’s project.

All those Moss-Bradley signature events, such as the Hanging of the Greens, the Moss Avenue Sale, the annual potluck, the vibrant membership meetings, publication of the Monthly Messen-ger—all of them depend on numerous volunteers. Look at the tasks performed by those volunteers and you will find that added together they have a big impact—even though individually they may be so small they may go unnoticed. These volunteer efforts define the Moss Bradley Residential Association and the neighborhood we live in.

Many contributions keep this organiza-tion going. Some take only a little time and occur infrequently. Some must be done every month and take more time. Almost all of them bring multiple peo-ple together to accomplish a common goal, and thereby help create the cement that holds us together and makes us as sturdy as these old houses we love.

There is something you can do to make your life better by making the neighbor-hood better. The task may seem small and inconsequential, but it will make a difference. Consider asking one of the Board members listed on the back of this newsletter, “What can I do to help?” I guarantee, we will find some-thing that suits you. As my predecessor was fond of saying, “After all, it’s the Moss-Bradley way.”

How do we look to those passing by?Observations ... questions ... hopes ... concernsCompiled by Marjorie Klise

One September morning in 2011, the answer to the newspaper’s “Crypto-quote” was one that definitely resonated with me:

Community is gathering around the fire and listening to someonetell us a story.

This is such a perfect example of what our neighborhood is all about.

At large civic gatherings we listen to our government tell us the story of what is happening in Peoria and what is planned for our future. We listen and learn.

At commission gatherings we hear the stories of particular problems and op-portunities. We listen and take action.

At our monthly neighborhood gather-ings we hear from our neighbors in or-der to help when needed. We welcome new friends and their stories. We say goodbye to those who leave us and keep their stories close to our hearts.

On our front porches we listen to some very personal stories of sorrow and joy and we offer support and encourage-ment. We laugh and we cry. We listen to honor our past. We listen to invigo-rate the present. We listen and envision the potential of a vibrant future. Our community gathers and listens and learns.

Send us your observations, story ideas or feedback! E-mail Kelly at [email protected]

Editor’s Note: A few of our writers are taking a break this month. We will see them back next month!
