On March the 5th more than 20 volunteers joined MCIB in a village-wide litter-pick as part of the national ‘Clean for the Queen’ campaign. 2 hours of hard work was followed by a tree-planting on the Common by the Mayor of Wigan in recognition of the Queen’s 90th birthday. We would like to say a huge thank you to all who turned out on the day to make it such a resounding success. (See the ‘red sofa’ report pg 2)

Mosley Common in Bloom at the BBC ! The events of the Clean for the Queen day
came to the notice of the BBC via Twitter
and the group was approached to appear
on Radio 5 Live the following morning to
discuss the clean-up campaign and the
Wigan Council scheme ‘The Deal’. Not only
did MCIB take part in the radio programme
along with Matt from The School of Military and a local councillor Barry
Taylor, but group members Maxine Abberley and John Worrall were also
invited to share the red sofa on the morning BBC news programme!
Garrett Hall in Bloom! Have you noticed the lovely flowerbed on the Garrett Estate? The bed was funded through a BNF bid from WLH and created by Greenspaces at Wigan Council. The upkeep of the flower bed will be maintained by volunteers from Greenwood Close and Garrett Hall Rd. A great example of how the community can make improvements to the area. Thank you all!
The Copse & Biodiversity Project
You may have noticed that we have started the second phase of this project and that some of the lost paths have begun to reappear. This was achieved with the help of Wigan Council (as part of #The Deal) John from JTW Services and MCIB, Louise Cook, Vice Chair of MCIB, Barry Thomas, a local resident, and other volunteers. Thanks to Matt from A Planet Fit For Nature, we have been lucky enough to win a selection of bird boxes and a hedgehog hotel which, along with bat and bug hotels, wildflowers and fruit-bearing trees, will be placed in the copse to attract wildlife. All of this will be part of the fun and educational nature trail which we hope will attract both children and adults. Once complete the space will be more manageable and also accessible for our litter picks. On-going management of the space will be done by MCIB, and we are always looking for more help with this type of project so if you feel you can help in any way please get in touch.
Before Overgrown trees and brambles made the copse a haven for antisocial behaviour and fly tipping.
After The new paths will make the area more safe and welcoming for visitors of all ages.

Anti Social Behaviour MCIB has held 2 meetings about the ASB taking place in the vil-lage. We are liaising with residents from Astley, Boothstown and Gin Pit who appear to be suffering the same problems. The next meeting will take place in Lindale Hall at 7.30pm on Thurs-day 22nd September. Please don’t forget to ring 101 to report ASB in confidence. It is very important that you do so as the statistics are recorded, reviewed and influence policing.
