Cossack Maslenitsa in the Park “Fili”

Maslenitsa - traditional Rus-sian holiday.

But Russia is so vast and multifaceted that it is com-posed of representatives of different nations and ethnic groups. They are character-ized by both Russian and original tradition. In the 18th century on the

outskirts of the Russian gov-ernment formed a special class, called “Cossacks”.

They have different origins; their customs are slightly different depending on the area of residence, but the Cossacks - certainly original and unique culture.

Take notice, who will take the first pancake:

male or female - this will be the sex of the next new born in your family.

• All pancakes are taken - waiting for good fortune for the new coming year.

•How many pancakes would remain - so many years you will be unmarried or unhap-py in your relationship.

Find an amazing recipe for Russian Pancakes in our Maslenitsa guide!

If the middle turned black – husband/wife is faithful. If the side – he/she will ad-mire neighbours more than you;

•How many holes in the pancake - so many kids in the whole family;

•Beautiful rosy pancake – healthy you will be; if pale – might get ill

•Thin pancake - for an easy life, thick – for much work.

• If a pancake rolled easily - this year you will get mar-ried or will be even more in love with your partner if you are already married;

•If a pancake stuck to the pan – spend 3 years more at the parental home;

•Smooth edges in pancake - a happy marriage is waiting for you, or happiness with your partner;

•The edges are uneven, ragged - you need to think twice before getting mar-ried, your choice is not so good for you;

Another magic way to enjoy this cele-bration is...

Robert Doisneau “The Beauty of everyday Life”Born in a northern suburb of Paris in 1912, Robert Do-isneau retained a lifelong connection to this city. It was his hunting ground, ready to be used, his chosen source of images and emo-tions. Paris was his world, photography his pretext, curiosity his driving force and lightness his style. No-body else could take such unforgettable photographs, capturing an imperceptible moment of balance, the fruit of his rare mastery and its relentless cultivation. One of the most important rep-resentatives of humanistic photography, Robert Dois-neau went a long way from professional craft to artwork of unexpected seriousness, capturing on film fragments of a world to which he wished to bear witness.

He grew up in a petit bour-geois world that he never really loved but from which he never completely de-tached himself. Having fin-ished his studies, he started to work as a draughtsman at Atelier Ullman. In 1931, he became an assistant to André Vigneau.

This extensive selection provides us with an updat-ed critical re-reading, show-ing us how the apparent spontaneous beauty of his photographs was, in fact, the result of considerable work.Aside from the streets of Paris, where he encoun-tered and portrayed lovers and children, Doisneau also produced some remarka-ble and unexpected colour photographs. In 1960, the magazine Fortune engaged the French photographer to reveal the life of an ex-ceptional city, born like a brilliantly coloured flower in the middle of the Californian desert: Palm Springs. Do-isneau accepted the chal-lenge and, amid the desert sands, palms and cobalt blue sky, the noisy inhabit-ants’ flashy attire, cocktails and golf courses, created his own personal American dream — not in black and white, but in an explosion of colour. The images from the album Palm Springs 1960 reveal a little-known side of this great photographer, and even the most seasoned ex-perts will be surprised and carried away by the festive and ironic universe that Do-isneau created.

Doisneau always ap-proached his work with a little self-mockery. Perhaps, it was his antidote to the an-guish of not being a jester, a tight-rope walker or a magi-cian, as he was too much of a realist.

And here lies the paradox of one who wished to carry out his work like a street artist, with the chaste joy and fun of an artist malgré lui.

Until 1994, the year of his demise, Robert Doisneau lived with his camera as his constant companion, curi-ous about this little theatre in which he was an actor.

MAMM16, Ostozhenka Str.m. Kropotkinskayawww.mamm-mdf.ru

In 1934, he was employed by the Renault factories and left this job five years later to join the celebrated pho-tography agency Rapho.

Thanks to the intellectual Robert Giraud, whom Dois-neau met in 1947, he gained access to the world of night life that was so far from his own and that, perhaps for this very reason, completely fascinated him.

Doisneau’s first book, La Banlieu de Paris (a joint pro-ject with Blaise Cendrars), was published in 1949. Success soon followed: his photos became known all over the world.

Doisneau became, per-haps without even wanting it, the ‘portraitist’ of a city, Paris, and of a world, partly real and partly invented, in which it would be beautiful to live.

For many years he was looked upon as the minstrel of picturesque Paris, with a charming eye and a unique sense of the unexpected visual anecdote.

As a result, he was champi-oned as a poet of the ‘pure’ moment.

Doisneau’s oeuvre is, how-ever, much deeper and complex than that reputa-tion suggests. This exhibi-tion presents his famous images set alongside some previously unseen in public.

The result of a trip to Dik-son became Mannharta re-port, as well as a joint photo exhibition Ursa and Beata “Dikson Life / Ice margins”, reflecting the daily life of the city in the Arctic Circle.

Power Point project by Alexander PogorzhelskyMoscow Museum of Mod-ern Art presents the Power Point project by Alexan-der Pogorzhelsky, one of the most promising young painters of Russia.

The artist’s oeuvre is re-markable for the desire to identify the essence of the moment, colour perception and vision of reality. Alex-ander Pogorzhelsky anal-yses his feelings that arise in the process of contem-plation. The author paints his artworks on memory, re-searching their new facets. The artworks call to reflect on the transience of time and on what remains when the boundaries of visual and sensual are eliminated.

The exhibition on the ground floor at 10, Gogolevsky Boulevard is conventionally divided into four interrelated parts. The works are made as field sketches. The ex-hibition is based on the im-ages of megaliths that are located in all corners of the globe, often called the pow-er points.

26 Moscow Digest www.intermarkrelocation.ru

Page 27: Moscow Digest 004.2015 February 21st&22nd

Characters and objects that excite the author are in the canvases to emphasize the inexhaustible admiration of the mankind before the an-cient monuments. Tourists, traditionally loaded with cameras, rucksacks and other objects of camp life, catch the eye of the artist. In contrast with them, in can-vases there are people, who are able to put everyday ob-jects aside, to feel the majes-ty of forms of the ancient ar-tifacts and to experience the history of the place. The an-cient stone monuments and rock paintings are the next part of the composition and form the focus of the scen-ery, making amazing land-scapes. Modern abstract sculptures that surround us in the everyday life of big cities seem to be inspired by the strange forms of the pre-historic monuments.
