    Designing in the street

A group of Design students from Sheffield Hallam

University in the UK did a research project

about innovative street design. The purpose of

their project was to eplore how design can be

used to create interesting and innovative urban

spaces. The students focused on a section of

!loucester "oad in #ondon. They considered the

street in terms of the people who lived there

permanently$ such as home owners and shop

owners$ the people who passed through$ such as

pedestrians$ and those who regularly interacted

in the street$ such as post men$ tai drivers$

bus drivers and rubbish collectors. At the time

of the study there were plans to reduce the

number of vehicles in the street by only

    allowing electric cars.

The students started the project by observing

what went on in the street over a wee%. They

also tal%ed to people in the street$ as%ingtheir opinions about what they would li%e to see

made better and how they wanted the street to

change in the future. Then the students went

away and thought about how they could improve

the neighbourhood. They didn&t just focus on

design$ but also on how they could encourage a

sense of community and sharing between

    strangers.

'ne of the ideas they came up with was ()us Stop

*essaging&. They put a large notepad on a bus

stop with the +uestion$ (,hat are you thin%ing

about to pass the time-& *any people on the

street wrote their thoughts on the pad. The

students discovered that people li%ed sharing

their stories with each other and reading other

    people&s stories.

The net eperiment was a (Swap )o&. This was a

bo that people could leave things in that they

no longer wanted and as% for things they wanted.

ach object in the Swap )o had a paper tag

attached with a short story about the history of

the object and why the owner wanted to swap it.

This idea was +uite successful and proved an

effective way of recycling objects and reducing

    waste.

Another rather humorous idea that emerged as a

result of the research was the (!ossip /ehicle&.

This is an electric car that could be shared by

the people living on the street in an effort to

reduce the number of cars in the area. 0n order

to gain access to the car$ the passenger has to

whisper an eciting piece of news or gossip to

    the car1

The students& creative ideas helped to

temporarily transform a typical #ondon street

into a friendly and helpful place with a real

    sense of community.
