MORNING PRAISEarranged for orchestra by David Winkler

MORNING PRAISE is a symphonic setting based on the magnificent hymn, “WhenMorning Gilds the Skies.”

The arrangement is based loosely on Ferde Grofé’s famous “Sunrise” from the Grand

Canyon Suite. Included also is a hint of the melody from Grieg’s well-known

“Morning” from Peer Gynt . There are also little touches of the hymn “Morning Has

Broken” in some of the woodwind figures.

The piece is scored for a typical church orchestra in which strings are optional, though

strings, if present, will contribute greatly to the symphonic character of thearrangement. The organ is also optional, but will add much to the ending if included.

A synthesizer could easily substitute if an organ is not available. Note that, except for

optional cues, the organ does not actually enter until measure 59. If desired, the organ

could be featured more prominently by having the orchestra tacet beginning at measure

63, beat 3, coming back in at measure 66, beat 4.

On the last measure, the conductor may choose to use brass only (with the percussion

accent). If organ is used on the last chord as well, as special effect could be obtained by

having the organ continue after the brass are cut off (a la Also Sprach Zarathustra).

For certain performance applications, you may wish to omit the introduction and begin

right at measure 8. Tempos are marked clearly throughout. Be careful to keep the piece

moving, not allowing it to drag.

The scripture speaks often of meeting God in the morning, our Lord’s example being

the most outstanding occasion that comes to mind. It is hoped that this arrangement

will be useful in inspiring a greater devotion to God, from the first waking thought. “O

God, Thou art my God; early will I seek Thee.” (Psalm 63:1).
