Co-operative Fruit-Drying— Work in the Beet Sugar Factories— The Artesian Wells for Oakland. Niles. Sen. 15. —The fruit-dryin: yards are being cleared. The last prunes and peaches are being handled this week, and tbe first year's work in the dryer is about at an end. The season has only been two mouths, but an immense amount of fruit considering it is the initial year has been handled. Five hundred tons of apricots, 100 tons of peaches and 150 ton* of prune's is about the bulk of the green fruit dried. Several tons of pears and sil- ver prunes buve also been handled. The number of tons of dri^d fruit on band of ail varieties trust be about 200 tons. 'I» is now being sorted, regrad«*d, and will soon be in a condition to sell. What the ex- pense bss been fa individuals cannot yet be determined, as i: is » co-operative con- cern. Tbe expense falls proportionately upon each member. Hence tbe work must be complete before tbat can be de* termined. From various reasons fresh fruit com- manded but medium pri'-'s this year, so owners oi dried fruit hardly look forward to fancy prices, but expect 10 do better by handling the fruit in Urate quantities than by selling It out in small quantities, as in- dividual dryers hate to. Th» benefit to tie worker* in town can hardly be over-, estimated. No Chinese wnre employed. and the money went into the pockets of those who spend their money in the town where ihey live. The payroll reached a* higti as .800 some weeks. Koug ly speak- ing, ihe diver probably bandied half ot the fruit grown in the immediate neigh- borhood of ilea , tin* does not i. elude almonds, which ere grown iv large quan- tities her:-. The capaci y of the sugar lactory at Al- varaao has been doubled this year, and work be.an last Monday. An 'addition, 50_t"0 feet, has been built 10 handle the in- creased number of tods fir which have been contra: ted. Two hundred inns a day was ibe run last season; 4DO will be run this year. A new lti_e_ lv and mote sheds have been built Some 880 cars, or o_oo tons of beet*, wi!! oe sent from Al- vi»o, A.di-w- and Santa Clara this season, and no less t.ian l_iO cars, or about 15,000 tons, from lfasauiou. it is bardiy pos- sible to tsl yet what the local y.eld will be, but the beets are a hue size this season an. will doult be of as good quality as usual. Ibe hauling of the Pieasaoiiu beets from Dt-coiu lr tbe mill is no small item ot expense. D. L.. Stone of Sau Leaudro bas the contract. The amount of coal burned m the mill i* also quito an item. Tbree thousand ions were received last week from British Columbia. An enterprise which is making thing* livelyin that tame section is 'he tiDing of the artesian well water to Oakland. The several well- winch wer« tae exclusive property of Mr. Granger a. id son have been bought by Oakland capitalists and the water is being carried to Oakland, liumen»e concrete reservoirs sro being built, keeping numbers of teams busy hauling gravel. Thi* l- in addition to tie men actually engaged io tbe work. Hun- dreds oi men are therefore employed at gooa wages and at work which will keep them busy for some lime at the sugar mill ana ihe water works, so n_* ate very lively in the ueuhburuood of Aivarado. Grapes are ripening and in Mission ban Jose aud Waim Springs tha wineries will be in ful working order within another two weeks, so in various pans of our county targe interests are being worked, money ts free and people generally are looking forward to an easier winter than la-<! one. The only di-turbinu element just now is ia a pf'litical.sense, but ihe good candidates put rward in this section by each p.»ny bring also a fee. lug of security as regards local mailers. Several entertainments of a bun order are being projected in tbe valley, for work being over the piny time of ibe country people winter is cotui ig. Mbs. J. E. Tn__vTE. It is said .that window paces of' porous glass . ie b ins made in Pari.. The minute hulas m the glass are too fine to permit of a draught ana yet large enough to cause a pleasant ami healthy ventilation in a room. FOR BEING GOOD. Annual Distribution of Prizes to Orphans. THE BEHRENDT MEDALIST. Prizes for All Manner of Good Behavior. A BEHRENDT FOR GIRLS WANTED Pleasant Occasion at the Pacific He- brew Orphan Asylum— A Musical Entertainment. The little people and their bigger friends at the Pacific Hebrew Orphans' Asylum on Devisadero street had a grand jollification yesterday. It was the occasion of the dis- tribution of tbe annual prizes for merit of every kind, and the event was celebrated in the usual way by a musical entertain- ment given by the children themselves. ' The invited guests were notified on their cards that the entertainment would begin at 2 o'clock sharp, and those who arrived after that hour found their places taken. Every seat in the ball was occupied at tbat time, and standing room was taken so far as the guardian at the door guardian of the comfort of those inside would al- low, and so very many were turned away. There are l_s little ones in the asylum, their ages ranging from devotees of the "bottle" to 15 and 16 years, and the pro- gramme included ail who could walk and talc, and was very entertaining and amusing. President of the asylum S. W. Levy offi- ciated in the distribution of prizes, while the entertainment was under the direction of Superintendent Henry Mauser and Mrs. Mauser, Miss Janette Ephraim, Miss Eva Kropp. Miss Adele Levy and Professor L. yon der Mehden, teachers. The programme included several selec- tions by "our brass band." our brass band being composed of course of small orphan boys, some of tbem blowing lot■> instru- ments larger than themselves, and the per- formances were all very creditably done; vocal selections by the singing class, piano aolM and duels, Amelia Snook and Haitie Fried; a barytone solo from "The Bohe- mian Girl" (William Hirseh), and a cornet soio by Abe Reuben, the latter quite dis- tinguishing himself. A march and song by "our kindergar- ten." which was carried through by a band of little tots without a slip in song or step, was the most effective number of the first half of the programme and showed the re- sult of careful training. The second naif of the programme was an operetta, "Hunt the Thimble, or Nellie Grant's Surprise Party," and was rendered very nicely. It was taken part in by Ray Goltman, Marie Albert, Hulda Lacomy, liam Hirseh, George Plato, Artie Ocpenheimer, Hannah Rosenthal, Susie Rini;stein, Jennie Anshel, Etta Wein- berg, Hatiie Fried and a chorus of sur- prises. And then a great bos full of mysterious packages -»• put upon the stage and Pre ident Levy began the distribution of piiz-s. here is one very valuable prize the! Bebrend" medal, wi h which goes a cash j prize of 3250. This is given to the boy who stands highest in hi* studies at the pat-in school, and whose record i*good for ' department as well. The cash priza is the i interest on foOOC) left some year- ago by Herman B«r_iidt to t*>e asylum to create j for al! time such an annual priz-*, a sub- stantial and constant stimulus for good. The winner of tne piize was 13-year-old Ilarry Holz-r, a manly looking lite lel- low, who bore his honors mode-tiy. In bestowing the priz--. President Levy said that his teacher in the Crocker ib ie j school bad spoken of him as unusual y i lever. In the sixth gra<le he had stood ] 99)4 Per cent the first moutti of his entry. | ahU a the end of the year h*d be<-n ad- vanced from the sixth to the eighth grade, | skipping the seventti. The $259 will be placed in a savings | bank an«, w.tb the -accrued interest, will I be turned over to him when he comes of ■ age. lv bestowing it President Levy ex- i pressed the hope that some of the rich j friends of the institution would do for the i girls what Mr. Behrendt bad done for the boys— the prize was limited to the boys. Fannie flyman and Leo Drosdovit re- ceived the house medals lor "best deport- { ment."' Ahe Hyiuan and Fannie Bushel received j the $5 god risces given by Mrs. H. H. | Meyers for deportment Besides these other small prizes such as "game of lotto," "lunch box and marbles," etc., were civen for deportment to Isadore Schwariz, WiilFogel, Moses ßloomenihal, Sol Sapero, Haitie Anshel, Ray Strikes, ! Niles. Sen. 15. —The fruit-dryin:yards are being cleared. The last prunesand peaches are being handled this week, and tbe first year's work in the dryer isabout at an end. The season has onlybeen two mouths, but an immense amountof fruit

has been handled. Five hundred tons ofapricots, 100 tons of peaches and 150 ton*of prune's is about the bulk of the greenfruitdried. Several tons of pears and sil-ver prunes buve also been handled. Thenumber of tons of dri^d fruiton band ofail varieties trust be about 200 tons. 'I»isnow being sorted, regrad«*d, and willsoonbe in a condition to sell. What the ex-pense bss been fa individuals cannot yetbe determined, as i: is » co-operative con-cern. Tbe expense falls proportionatelyupon each member. Hence tbe workmust be complete before tbat can be de*termined.

From various reasons fresh fruit com-manded but medium pri'-'s this year, soowners oi dried fruit hardly look forwardto fancy prices, but expect 10 do better byhandling the fruitin Urate quantities thanby selling Itout in small quantities, as in-dividual dryers hate to. Th» benefit totie worker* in town can hardly be over-,estimated. No Chinese wnre employed.and the money went into the pockets ofthose who spend their money in the townwhere ihey live. The payroll reached a*higtias .800 some weeks. Koug lyspeak-ing, ihe diver probably bandied half ot

A BEHRENDT FOR GIRLS WANTED

Pleasant Occasion at the Pacific He-brew Orphan Asylum— A Musical

Entertainment.

The little people and their bigger friendsat the Pacific Hebrew Orphans' Asylum onDevisadero street had a grand jollificationyesterday. Itwas the occasion of the dis-tribution of tbe annual prizes for merit ofevery kind, and the event was celebratedin the usual way by a musical entertain-ment given by the children themselves.

'

The invited guests were notified on theircards that the entertainment would beginat 2 o'clock sharp, and those who arrivedafter that hour found their places taken.Every seat in the ball was occupied attbat time, and standing room was taken sofar as the guardian at the door

would al-low, and so very many were turned away.

There are l_s little ones in the asylum, their ages ranging from devotees of the"bottle" to 15 and 16 years, and the pro-gramme included ail who could walk andtalc, and was very entertaining andamusing.

President of the asylum S. W. Levy offi-ciated in the distribution of prizes, whilethe entertainment was under the directionof Superintendent Henry Mauser and Mrs.Mauser, Miss Janette Ephraim, Miss EvaKropp. Miss Adele Levy and Professor L.yon der Mehden, teachers.

The programme included several selec-tions by "our brass band." our brass bandbeing composed of course of small orphanboys, some of tbem blowing lot ■> instru-ments larger than themselves, and the per-formances were all very creditably done;vocal selections by the singing class, pianoaolM and duels, Amelia Snook and HaitieFried; a barytone solo from "The Bohe-mian Girl" (William Hirseh), and a cornetsoio by Abe Reuben, the latter quite dis-tinguishing himself.

A march and song by "our kindergar-ten." which was carried through by a bandof little tots without a slip insong or step, was the most effective number of the firsthalf of the programme and showed the re-sult of careful training.

The second naif of the programme wasan operetta, "Hunt the Thimble, or NellieGrant's Surprise Party," and was renderedvery nicely. It was taken part in by RayGoltman, Marie Albert, Hulda Lacomy,

liam Hirseh, George Plato, ArtieOcpenheimer, Hannah Rosenthal, SusieRini;stein, Jennie Anshel, Etta Wein-berg, Hatiie Fried and a chorus of sur-prises.

The winner of tne piize was 13-year-oldIlarry Holz-r, a manly looking lite lel-low, who bore his honors mode-tiy. Inbestowing the priz--. President Levy saidthat his teacher in the Crocker ib ie jschool bad spoken of him as unusual y i
