Based on 90 years of engineering pedigree, Morgan Advanced Materials – Composite &

Defence Systems design and manufacture advanced products using composite materials.

Formerly known as The Morgan Crucible Company Plc, the company originally designed and manufactured specialist commercial industrial products. In 1982, Morgan Composites and Defence Systems (previously NP Aerospace) won the contract for the manufacture of the Mk6 combat helmet. The company has been a key supplier of armour systems to the UK and International markets ever since.

Today, Morgan Advanced Materials – Composite & Defence Systems is the world leader in the manufacture of advanced armour systems for personal and platform protection.

Awarding Excellence

As recognition of this heritage and outstanding service to the defence sector, the Senior Management team of the Security Industry E Magazine are delighted to announce Morgan Advanced Materials as the deserving recipients of the Specialist Material Manufacturer of the Year Award for 2014. The Award reflects the industry leading material solutions that the company provide for the global defence market.

Whilst awarding the company with the Specialist Materials Manufacturer of the Year accolade, the Security Industry E Magazine is also well aware of Morgan advanced Materials world leading capabilities which include the provision of sector-leading engineering solutions for military based land vehicles.

Advancements in materials engineering have set Morgan apart from other industry competitors, as Duncan Eldridge, President of Morgan Advanced Materials – Composites and Defence Systems explained in a recent interview:

“Morgan CD&S has been providing armoured composite related solutions for over 20 years. These solutions have been developed in conjunction with the end user and our material scientists. No other company has this pedigree and experience, we have continued to invest in not only composite and ceramic technologies but also in manufacturing techniques and capabilities, this results in solutions which include world leading performance, at the best value for money and at the lowest weight. As the protection level increases the weight benefit of composite materials increases significantly.”

Morgan's facility in Coventry is dedicated to the defence and commercial composite markets. In addition to the Soldier Protection systems, the site is also home to the design, manufacture and integration of high performance, lightweight, multi-hit armour systems for land vehicles, ships and aircraft.

Vehicle Protection

The most advanced lightweight, multi-hit vehicle armour in the world and the specialist systems integrator for many armoured platforms, Morgan played a major role in the development of the Mastiff, Ridgback, Wolfhound and MAN support vehicles and is the on shore design authority for all UK Cougar platforms. The company continues to invest in their capabilities and drawing on impressive engineering resources, are able to respond effectively to complex problems with short lead times - supplying products that perform more efficiently, more reliably and for longer.

Utilising CAMAC® advanced composite technology to deliver outstanding performance in ballistic and IED protection, CAMAC® armour provides a protective shield with outstanding ballistic and mechanical performance and up to a 50% weight saving (when compared to the latest equivalent steel armour options) when protecting against armour-piercing projectiles. CAMAC® armour also deflects a wide range of threats, including fragmentation, high velocity small arms, grenade attack, mine blasts and burning fluids.Composite panels are precision moulded in shapes to match individual vehicle configurations and are upgradeable as threat levels in theatre is identified and increases via Morgan’s Modular Applique solutions.

The initial design for the Snatch Land Rover platforms has formed a blue print for future projects. Additional investment in technology advancements has enabled Morgan to offer Light Weight structural armour in vehicles and protected weapons system reducing the Centre of Gravity and reducing inertia when rotating. Morgan Advanced Materials is a world leader in composite pods and have won a number of development

contracts for multiple International development agencies.Drawing on its extensive materials and engineering expertise, Morgan have designed and developed a bespoke armoured composite crew compartment for Tata Motors' Light Armoured Multipurpose Vehicle (LAMV) programme for the Indian Ministry of Defence. Their LAMV prototype was successfully unveiled at Defexpo, New Delhi, in February. The LAMV incorporates crew protection based upon Morgan's bespoke composite and ceramic 'pod' technology. The pod creates a detachable, blast and ballistic-resistant crew compartment, which was easily integrated onto the Tata-produced chassis and can be modified to provide higher levels of protection as and when required. The Morgan composite and ceramic 'pod' provided a weight saving in excess of 1,000 kg, making it less than half the weight of a similarly protected steel structure.

Vehicle Systems

Morgan is the on-shore Design Authority for the Mastiff family of vehicles. The company has designed, developed and produced over 1,100 vehicles in the past six years whilst continuously investing in its capabilities to provide cost effective support to the fleets for the coming years.

Due to the company's quick response times, Morgan Advanced Materials was the only company able to respond within the Mastiff UOR time restraints, with 70% of the vehicle value being integrated in Morgan's Coventry facility. MOD DTSL tested, the systems manufactured by Morgan exceeded MOD expectations and featured unique multi-hit technology, as well as additional bolt-on armour providing increased levels of protection.

Personal ProtectionMorgan Advanced Materials supply the most advanced lightweight soldier protection system (LASA) technologies in the world including combat helmets, body armour and explosive ordnance disposal suits (ERGOTEC).The company has supplied over one million Combat Helmets worldwide, including 100,000 Mk7 helmets for UK operations in Afghanistan and Iraq. The Mk7 helmet provides protection from blunt trauma, blast, fragmentation and ballistic threats, the system is stringently tested in-house in Morgan’s ISO 17025 accredited laboratory – these ballistic ranges are two of only a few in Europe.

Using its material processing knowledge, Morgan has developed the latest generation multi-hit, lightweight combat helmets, the AC904. The AC904 is 30% lighter than competitive solutions, providing the user with a reduced weight burden of 400g. Along with its unique design, the AC904 combat helmet is bend resistant whilst still possessing the capability to withstand blunt trauma, blast fragmentation and ballistic threats due to the material lay-up used during manufacture. This reduced weight philosophy at the same or higher levels of performance has been further developed in Morgan’s latest Combat Helmet offering the AC905 high cut assault helmet.

Morgan's production capabilities are driven and flexed to meet needs of the customer providing a process which is fully traceable and uses dedicated cutting, moulding and QA systems.

Ballistic Protective Inserts are engineered to the most demanding of requirements including NIJ0101.04 and NIJ0101.06 levels I to IV and higher multi-hit threats. The design and manufacture of the plate carriers and complete body armour systems make the inserts the ideal solution for military, police and civilian end users.

Morgan's unparalleled experience enables the company to produce systems that meet the specific and urgent requirements of its customers. For example, the UK MOD Osprey plate, which was used in Afghanistan, took just a few weeks to develop, qualify and produce. To date, Morgan Advanced Materials have manufactured 100,000 Osprey plate with the whole system design, prototype qualification and delivery capabilities on site in Coventry.

Morgan also conducts batch destructive and non-destructive testing for the UK MOD using its x-ray capabilities to characterise post-conflict helmets and protection plates to detect any anomalies in the ceramic structure.

Morgan Advanced Materials' latest product offering is the LASA Soldier System comprising of light weight helmets, light weight ballistic plates, load carriages and Tier 3 ballistic protection. The range was launched at Defence Security Asia (DSA) held in Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia and more recently at DVD, Millbrook, UK.

Morgan's revolutionary Ergotec EOD Suits combine maximum protection with class leading ergonomic performance. Designed for use in disposal strategies and gathering of forensic intelligence, the suits are favoured by the UK MOD and an increasing number of countries worldwide.

Designed with leading-edge materials technology and garment engineering, the EOD suits provide the user with maximum protection with minimal hindrance to movement. They are lightweight, comfortable to wear for extended periods and feature effective ventilation and cooling systems thus reducing operator fatigue.

Morgan's ERGOTEC EOD suits are available in two versions:

ERGOTEC 4010 EOD suit offers maximum protection and ergonomic performance allowing the operator the freedom required to gather forensic intelligence, whilst typically offering a 30% reduction in weight or a 12kg saving in weight burden for the operator.

ERGOTEC 3010 is a lightweight EOD search suit designed to enable extended duration missions in a high threat environment.
