reflection
• The bouncing back as a wave hits a surface
• Free boundary – one end is free to move up and down, wave will be identical to the first wave
• Fixed boundary – one end is fixed – wave will be opposite to the original wave
Example or reflection
refraction
• Bending of waves when they pass from one medium to another less density to greater density
interference
Two waves in the same spotAs they pass through each other, they
create a new wave. After they pass each other they go back to their
original size
Constructive interference
• Two wave passing and the crests line up creating a larger wave as they pass. After they pass they go back to original size
Destructive wave interferenceWhen two waves pass each other and the crest and trough line up creating a smaller wave as they pass – after they go back to original size
Standing wave
• When two waves interfere that have the same amplitude and speed they look like they are not moving only revolving
Doppler effect
• A moving vibration pushes the wave in front making a higher frequency shorter wavelength higher pitch and the wave behind stretch out making a lower frequency – longer wave length lower pitch
Doppler with light waves
• The color of light for something going away would be red (wave stretched ou making longer wavelengths) – coming closer would be blue (waves pushed together making shorter wavelengths
• Red shift Blue shift – that’s how we know the universe is expanding
