Aspiration is the taking of foreign material into the lungs

It could be inhaled food, fluids, medications, gastric contents, saliva, bacteria, or foreign objects

This can cause pneumonia

“Foods” like hot dogs, popcorn, nuts, carrots, grapes, bacon, hard or chewy candy, and crumbly foods can become “foreign material” in the lungs if individuals can not chew and swallow them adequately

If individuals have impaired cognitive functioning,they may accidentally swallow “things” like deflated balloons, pennies, pen caps, beads, batteries, and small toys that can cause lung or respiratory problems
