The sun is shining and a snow-covered Mount Taranaki is looking splendid this morning. It is still winter as I write this but I know spring is just around the corner as I saw some daffodils today. The coming months of August and September are exciting as we celebrate Poetry Month in August and launch a brand new programme for our adult readers in September. Many of you commented after seeing children enjoying the Summer Reading Programme that you wanted something to do as well.

So we have developed The Reading Connection, a six week challenge to read and review three books, learn more about our collections, attend lots of fun events all around the district and come to the big launch night in Hawera on 16 September. Watch out for posters and entry forms, everyone over 18 years of age can take part and I look forward to meeting you all at the launch night.

Ancestry.com is a wonderful resource for those wanting to explore family history. The library edition of this is available for free in all seven LibraryPlus centres. Anything you find can be printed or saved to a USB stick. Ancestry.com is an online family history resource built up over the last 10+ years. It includes historical records, photos, stories, family trees and contributions from a community of millions from around the world. It is strongest in North American and United Kingdom information but also has New Zealand and Australian resources. ‘New’ information is constantly being added from public sources, e.g. all New Zealand Electoral Rolls 1853 – 1981, and from private sources, so you are now able to access private Family Trees that individuals have agreed to share. One customer found Army records for a Great-Uncle who died in WW1, a family tree with photographs that have helped identify some very old unnamed photos inherited from an aunt, traced where various relatives lived in England at different times and learnt who was in their household through Census records. Come in to any of our LibraryPlus centres with the information you already know about your family and see if you can find out more through Ancestry.com.

The Secret of the Nightingale Palace Dana Sachs

“I read this novel over last weekend and thoroughly enjoyed it. The writing was vivid and flowed well. I wanted to keep reading and learn what happened. There are delightful twists and turns and the astringency of the grandmother is well portrayed. The granddaughter is finding her way into life again will she make? That’s for you to find out.” – Lynne

“This is an awesome story that precedes The Walking Dead series on TV. If you want to know how the Governor became what he is then read these two books The Rise of the Governor and The Road to Woodbury'” – Karen

“I absolutely loved this book. Couldn't wait for my next chance to turn the pages. For those of us who like the murdering sadistic read - definitely one not to miss.” - Tanya

The Marx Sisters: a Kathy and Brock Mystery Barry Maitland

“Yippee I have found another great crime writer in the English traditions of ‘Who done it?’ as well as a new crime fighting duo to boot. Really enjoyed this first story involving Brock and Kathy already reading my second one.” - Lynne

Get to Know your Librarian: Ann-Louise Vonk, Children’s Librarian at

Hawera LibraryPlus

How long have I been a librarian? I’ve always loved libraries, I’ve been immersed in the ‘library world’ ten plus years, doing a Level 5 Diploma in Library Studies while being a Teacher Aide. I loved doing this qualification and was really excited getting work in a school library, then Paraparaumu and Porirua Libraries and now LibraryPlus in Hawera. What is the most rewarding part of my job? It’s helping people, meeting lots of different people and knowing that what I do makes a difference. I love my work. LibraryPlus runs many programmes, which is cool and it’s great being able to bounce ideas around with the library team. What is my favourite book that I would recommend? That's always changing. At the moment I'm reading a lot of teen fiction. I've just finished The Nature of Ash by Mandy Hager, it's a thriller set in a future New Zealand and it was hard to put down and had characters that stay with you. I’ve also just read and enjoyed Janie Face to Face, it's the last in a series about a girl that was kidnapped as a child and recognises herself on a milk carton. I am a huge fan of children's picture books and love reading them in story time and promoting them.
