A Message from Lynne Libraries and Cultural Services Manager

Welcome to More Than Books, the winter edition. As I write this I am thinking of

Christchurch covered in snow and have no doubt Mt Taranaki has a glistening

white coating as well. This is the season to hunker down by the fire with a good

pile of books or an eReader filled with titles from our two eBook suppliers. You

can also download an audible book and listen on your iPod or Smartphone. The

world is changing fast and South Taranaki Libraries are pleased to bring you

eBooks as another format of the “Book”.

When I visit the libraries I see a great variety of activities taking place: from

people on our free internet to those studying quietly; children listening to a

storytelling session and a coffee morning group being shown our Music Online

Resource during Music Month. It will be dog registration soon when many dog

owners head into their local LibraryPlus to pay for their precious pets and

working dogs to be registered for another year. I enjoy seeing our vibrant

facilities being well used by the residents and visitors of South Taranaki.

Bye for now

Lynne

An original copy of Geoffrey Chaucer's Canterbury Tales sold for a record £4,621,500

My 5+ favourite books: Monique Sinclair, President of Opunake

Business Association, shares her favourite reads:

It is indeed a privilege and pleasure to be able to

share my love of reading with the South Taranaki

community. I love reading! Especially at this time of

the year, during those cold winter nights when I can

curl up under the blanket with a Milo

and lose myself in another time and

place. One of my favourite books is

also one of my children‟s Baggy

Bottoms are Best written by their aunt,

Heather Sinclair. The pictures and text

go together extremely well. I love the point that the

grass isn‟t always greener on the other side, be

happy with what you have got! The Lee Child series

with Jack Reacher as the main character are always a

good read. He is the modern version of MacGyver;

nothing is too difficult for him to overcome. No

matter how tricky the situation, he always manages

to find a way out of trouble.

I am also a big fan of non-fiction. When I travel, I

tend to head for books that are relevant to the area

that I am visiting. While on the Band Aid Box

expedition in 2010 to Nepal, I accumulated several

books related to Everest expeditions. Some of my

favourites were Doctor on Everest by Kenneth Kamler

MD and Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer. Both are

personal accounts of their experiences while in the

region. Another book collected when travelling is

The Elephant Whisperer by Lawrence Anthony. Set in

South Africa, Lawrence risks his life to save a rogue

herd of wild elephants on his Thula Thula reserve. I

am really excited as I have just

picked up his latest book The Last

Rhinos. Kelly Cutone, a very well-

known fashion publicist in New York,

has written 2 great books. If You

Have to Cry, Go Outside and Normal

Gets You Nowhere. Cutting at times,

no holds barred and to the point, she always gets me

thinking about world events and the way society is

today, from another perspective.

I can honestly say that I have yet to meet a book that

I haven‟t liked. My general rule of thumb is to read

the first page and make a decision from there.

Sometimes, putting it back and coming back to it

after some time may change my initial view of it and

I‟ll give it a go. Enjoy your local library, if you are

looking for something in particular, just ask. You will

be pleasantly surprised at what the librarians can

find for you!

Happy winter reading!

Get to know your librarian: Cath Sheard – Cultural Services Assistant Manager

How long have you been a librarian? I started in the libraries 19 years ago at the

end of this year. Initially I worked part time, in the old Hunter Shaw building in

Patea, moved onto Waverley and then back to Patea to manage both facilities. Earlier this year I took over

management of Aotea Utanganui the Museum of South Taranaki as well. Do you read much? Not as much as I would like to be honest. I read mainly non-fiction – art, travel, biographies –

Amish, lesbian/gay romances and serial murders. It‟s an odd mix I suppose; not sure what it says about me! What gets you out of bed in the morning? Apart from the alarm clock you mean? I love the idea that we provide

a place where anyone in the community can feel at home. We don‟t just lend books; we connect with people in all

sorts of ways. For me it is all about being part of the community. If you could change one thing, what would it be? I would love to see our children have bigger dreams for

themselves. We have such bright young people in our communities whose talents could take them all over the

world, if only they saw a place for themselves „out there‟. Is there anything happening in the library world that excites you? Yes. I really like the fact that more and

more titles are available in print, as audio books, and in electronic formats. It means people have a choice about

how they enjoy a story And finally, what book are you recommending at the moment? Sonoma Rose by Jennifer Chiaverini. I love

Chiaverini‟s books, all based on women who quilt – gentle and entertaining.

The Library of Congress, Washington DC, USA contains 28 million books and has 532 miles of shelving

“How to Improve Your Chess Game” by Charles Manson made the Worst-selling books of all time list

In focus: Manaia LibraryPlus

In 1983 a small committee of volunteers from Manaia, including Carole Hosie and June Wallace, was formed to

start a library. There was a call for the community to donate books and the committee rented a small room in the

Temple Buildings (formerly housed a solicitor and then a photographic studio). The committee formed a roster

and the library opened for a few hours each week.

It wasn‟t long before the library was deemed to be an essential need for the community. The Town Board began

to assist with a small budget and support. The National Library loaned books and came to visit in a mobile bus.

The Librarian was in charge of choosing the books.

By April 1985 the Manaia Town Board was now the Waimate Plains Council and had purchased the building. With

a lot of help from service groups - such as the Fire Brigade, Lions Club, etc - new carpet tiles were laid, the

building was given a paint job and more shelves were purchased. The library was still only open for six hours per

week over three days. The library used to charge an annual subscription fee to borrowers, however, this fee was

ceased because the National Library would only loan to free libraries. Carole Hosie was officially appointed

Librarian in 1985. The National Library increased their loan total and more money for books was gained from the

Waimate Plains District Council.

The library was pretty basic at this stage, no phones, no computers, and basic heating. In spite of the lack of

facilities the library has always been active in organising children‟s activities. Holiday programmes, author visits

and storytelling times were being held from the beginning of the library‟s conception.

Community support continued to grow and the library steadily increased the hours. The Librarian was now being

paid and volunteers were still on hand. In 1989 the local councils merged and formed the South Taranaki District

Council. Manaia Library became part of a team of seven libraries. The library grew and facilities improved. Kath

Copeland began working as a volunteer along with Margaret Fox and Mary Hogwood. In 1992 computerisation

took place.

In 1995 the Temple Buildings was declared an earthquake risk and the library moved to the Council Buildings at

the other side of town, opposite the swimming baths. The hours were then increased to 20 per week.

In 2002 LibraryPlus was established. This meant that the library staff trained and up-skilled so that Council

facilities (rates, dog registrations etc) could be undertaken and June Wallace was transferred to the library. At

present the library is doing well and is the hub of the Community. It is a modern facility open 40 hours a week and

offers class visits, Little Critters, junior and adult book clubs and crossword mornings.
