Sacrificial Giving and some thoughts….. 2 Corinthians 9:6-7 “Whoever sows sparingly will

also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compul-

sion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” This Advent we cheerfully await the coming of our

Lord at Christmas. Let us not think so much about what we will receive this Christmas, but what we can give. When we sacrifice our gift of self we cover a

multitude of sins. The Lord smiles on us as we cheer-fully give our time, talent, and treasure.

SACRED HEART PARISH IS SEEKING A DIRECTOR OF MUSIC

Sacred Heart Catholic Church has an opening for a full-time Director of Music. The successful applicant will

work as a vital part of the parish staff team to bring the parish vision of ‘Inviting Everyone to Passionately Live the Gospel’ to realization, specifically through the work

of sacred music. Tasks include coordinating music to enhance the liturgical services of the parish, including

selecting music, playing the organ and piano for liturgies, directing choirs, coordinating cantors and accompanists,

and maintaining the pipe organ and piano. A full job description can be found at sacredheartaberdeen.net/employment-opportunities. Interested candidates are

asked to send a copy of their resume and an accompanying cover letter to Fr. Mark Lichter, Pastor of Sacred Heart, at [email protected], or by

mail to 502 2nd Ave SE Aberdeen, SD 57401.

This Sunday is December 8, but it isn’t the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception. Usually, if a Solemnity oc-curs on a Sunday, the Solemnity takes precedence. But a Solemnity cannot supercede a Sunday in Advent. Ad-vent is a time of preparation, and we must observe all four Sundays in Advent. Therefore, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception gets moved to the following day, December 9. Most years, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception is a holy day of obligation for us Americans. But it isn’t this year. While the solemnity moves, the obligation does not. Canon law allows for the obligation to attend Mass to be dispensed, as it sometimes is when a holy day of obligation falls on a Saturday. Canon law also allows a day which carries an obligation to be transferred to the nearest Sunday, which sometimes happens on Ascension Thursday. But when a solemnity which carries an obligation is transferred to a different weekday, the obligation to attend Mass does not transfer along with the solemnity. Because the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception is not a holy day of obligation this year, there will only be one Mass at Sacred Heart, our normal 5:30 daily Mass. Mass will also be available at St. Mary’s, St. Luke’s Hos-pital, and Presentation College. And although you are not obligated to attend Mass this Monday, it is still a good idea to try to attend one of those Masses. After all, for us Americans, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Concep-tion is our patronal feast day. The Blessed Mother, under the title of the Immaculate Conception, is the patroness of the United States. It’s a particularly good day to pray for our nation as we move into an election year.
