Hello MoPas,As a lover of creamy summer white #ootd and a

natural sun kissed glow, I have to say that summer

is my favorite time of year - aside from the winter

holidays.

Whether you like driving around on dewy nights

with the windows down, listening to grasshoppers

chirping and the Red Sox on the radio or lazing your

days at the beach with the littles - there is a certain

easiness about summer.

I’m really proud of the magazine that we’ve put to-

gether for you. From a stylish Modern Mom, to ideas

for staycations, and tips on how to snack on the go

and staying fit with your kids – there really is a little

something for everyone.

Enjoy the magazine and stay cool.

SET THE SCENEOur seasonal forecast: pair playful prints and sherbet hues for an on-trend party space.

Mix up glassware, linens and decor. Gone are the days where we coordinate anything except the menu.

Unexpected details: repurpose everyday items you have at home. For instance, our scarf easily becomes a table runner at this party.

Fresh fruit displays offer up color and work as an easy-to-reach garnish. Cheers.

Play up height when bringing the party outside. Stream trees, hang bunting or light lanterns.

Balloons are not just for birthday parties. We love the perfectly round oversized variety for almost any occasion. Buy them in bulk and keep within reach, year round.

Bring the indoors out. Everyday furnishing and accessories not only add capacity to your party space, but will offer comfort and charm. Genius.

Create seating vignettes throughout your party space. Throw pillows are a favorite! They offer comfort and design.

9MoPa’s SUMMER EDITION

Typical day for you? I work part time, so my days vary, but a typical work day begins with a 4:45 am wake-up (coffee is an absolute must!), getting my kids school things prepared, NPR in the car, a busy work day at Brahmin, pick up kids, dinner, homework, play, then crash!

Share with us a bit about your work? I have been a designer for Brahmin, a Fairhaven, MA based handbag company for about six years. I do a little bit of everything from designing handbags and small leather goods to developing custom leathers. Growing up, my Mom was an illustrator and my Dad was an automotive designer, so i was very fortunate to realize from an early age that you can actually make a living in a creative field. I have my degree in apparel design from the Fashion Institute of Technology and designed for several companies in New York before moving to New England about 12 years ago. After a brief period attending MassArt for graphic design, I realized that fashion was truly in my blood. I transitioned into accessory design and have never looked back. I love designing handbags, as I feel it is something every woman can wear, regardless of age or body type. Handbags are a great way to freshen up your look or try out a new trend without having to invest in a whole new outfit. I feel very proud to be working for Brahmin, as we are somewhat unique in that we have a local manufacturing facility.

I like to cook when I have the time, and enjoy reading lots of silly fantasy fiction and anything that has to do with the decadence of European royalty during the Renaissance. I love art history and I am an NPR and PBS junkie.

My boys are pretty close in age, which makes them naturally quite competitive. There are definitely those moments when I want to tear my hair out because of their constant bickering, but there are an equal amount of times when they are declaring each other their best friend and coming up with all sorts of silly games. i think my favorite moments are being able to just eaves drop on their play time together. it just amazes me to see their imaginations at work.

Three words that describe your family? Passionate, active, and playful.

Your style icon? I first became aware of fashion in the 80’s, by trying to mimic denise Huxtable from the Cosby Show. This later evolved into an obsession with deborah Harry and 80’s New Wave style in my 20’s. You can’t get much more fabulous than Iris Apfel- talk about using fashion as a form of play.

Happy mom moment? I am never happier than when I am playing at the beach or having an impromptu dance party with the boys.

Dedicated you time? I couldn’t function without yoga - it’s what keeps me sane and gives me the stamina I need as a busy Mom. I feel like I am always in the fast lane, so I really try to put on the breaks and steal a little “me” time every week. I discovered the hard way that you need to recharge your own batteries first so you can care for the rest of the family.

What you’re listing to right now? I could never get sick of Prince, but I also love Phoenix, Vampire Weekend, and Of Monsters and Men. I have a decent length commute, so singing in the car is essential.

Three things in the bottom of your Brahmin? Helios Pure Relief spray which smells amazing (and is made in Rhode Island!), my Retrosuperfuture sunglasses that make me feel slightly cooler when I am wearing them, a couple of matchbox cars and Lego people.

We’d find you where on date night? Our last date was at Launch, a trampoline park in Warwick, and the roller skating rink is next on our list.

Page 12: MoPa Summer '13 Magazine

JUNESwiss ChardWhy Helps to reduce inflammation, regulate blood sugar, and boost bone health, which is so important for women.

Serve Use in place of spinach, sauté in virgin coconut oil and garlic as a yummy side dish, or try this {rich} recipe for Four Cheese Swiss Chard Lasagna.

SpinachWhy Improves blood cell function, strengthens bones, regulates heart rate and blood pressure, and combats those pesky free radicals that disease and age us.

Serve Add to casseroles to boost nutrition, toss into a smoothie, or make a raw spinach salad like this recipe for Spinach Strawberry Salad with Roasted Asparagus and Balsamic Vinaigrette

Kale Why Kale is the darling when it comes to leafy greens. For good reason. Research has also shown that kale contains 45 different flavonoids with a variety of antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. It has been shown to lower cholesterol and may reduce the risk of certain types of cancer, plus it’s an incredible source of well-absorbed calcium, one of the many factors that may help.

Serve Kale is versatile, and any Google search will yield numerous recipe

ideas. My favorites include homemade kale chips, sautéed in virgin coconut oil and garlic as a yummy side dish, or {of course} a hearty kale soup like this recipe for Roasted Vegetable and Kale Soup

RadishesWhy Radishes are natural detoxifiers, aiding in gallbladder and liver function, are a stellar diuretic, preventing and fighting urinary tract infections, rich in fiber, and aid in relieving respiratory congestion.

Serve Radishes tend to be favored raw as a salad add-in or you can make them the main event like in this recipe for Cucumber, Radish, Chick Pea, and Parsley Salad with Creamy Feta & White Wine Vinegar Dressing.

StrawberriesWhy Boast cancer-protecting antioxidants, inflammation-fighting phytochemicals, immunity-boosting and wrinkle-fighting Vitamin C, and heart-healthy potassium and fiber. Be sure to buy your strawberries organic, since conventionally-grown are flooded with pesticides that are impossible to remove from the delicate and porous skin.

Serve They are amazingly delicious eaten fresh, in smoothies, yogurt, a-top homemade granola, among other things, including baked goods like in this recipe for Super Omega-3 Strawberry Rhubarb Crisp

JULYBroccoliWhy One cup contains the entire RdA of immune-boosting and free-radical fighting Vitamin C, which aids in cancer protection as well as sun damage and supporting skin detox and repair. Broccoli is also high in fiber, aiding in digestion, weight management, blood sugar balance, regularity, and appetite control.

Serve Roast it, steam it, sauté it, or enjoy it blanched and cold in this recipe for Sweet ‘N Sour Broccoli Salad.

BeetsWhy Great source of folate which is necessary for the production and maintenance of new cells, including that of growing babes {as well as preventing birth defects}, loaded with cancer-fighting antioxidants, aid in cleansing the blood and colon, while strengthening the gallbladder and liver {super-detoxing}, and contain betaines, which naturally boost our happy hormones, giving us a sense of well-being and relaxation.

Serve Absolutely delicious roasted and make a great addition to salads, like this high-protein Blushing Quinoa, Roasted Beet, and Feta Salad with Chick Peas and Honey Balsamic Vinaigrette.

CucumbersWhy Great natural detoxifier and hydrator, since they are 95% water, cancer-fighting with a nice does of lignans, and a great source of immune-boosting Vitamin C {10% of

LOCAL SUMMERPRODUCE GUIDEBy KriStEN BouCHErFor complete recipes visit www.fortheloveoffiber.com

Page 13: MoPa Summer '13 Magazine

the RdA}, particularly in the skin. Be sure to buy your cukes organic, since conventionally-grown are doused with pesticides.

Serve Refreshing addition to smoothies, green salads, as well as summer pasta salads like this Greek {Whole Grain} Pasta Salad.

TomatoesWhy Great source of potassium, folate {for those buns in the oven} and Vitamins A, C, and E. Besides being super heart-healthy and potent cancer-fighters, tomatoes may also help the body burn fat. Bioflavonoids found in the skin of tomatoes have been found to reduce inflammation, helping to regulate hormones like leptin, which is responsible for appetite control, metabolism, and ultimately weight loss.

Serve The better question is what can’t you do with a tomato? How about ditching the canned stuff and stocking your freezer with homemade tomato paste {yes, really}? Check out this Fresh Tomato Paste recipe at www.fortheloveoffiber.com.

BlueberriesWhy Practically the Patron Saint of the berry family, blueberries have the highest antioxidant capacity of all fresh fruit. All fruit. That’s a lot. This helps to boost immunity, neutralize free radicals, reduce heart disease, protect from cancer, aid in digestion, and has also been shown to help reduce belly fat.

Serve Everything. Blueberry pancakes, coffee cake, a yogurt or cereal topper, or old faithful, muffins, like these Whole Wheat Flax and Blueberry Muffins with Walnut Streusel. Or take a walk on the wild side with this Sweet ‘N Sour Green Smoothie.

August

PeppersWhy From hot peppers to bell peppers to sweet peppers, and everything in between, peppers are loaded in vitamin A, vitamin C, beta-carotene, lutein, and zeaxanthin, a carotenoid that promotes eye health. Hot peppers, however, get an A+ in the awesomeness category due to their energy and mood-boosting capabilities. The capsaicin in hot peppers raises endorphins {our happy hormones} as well as body temperature, which boosts metabolism, helping to reduce body fat accumulation.

Serve Roast in the oven or on the grill, add to green salads, make a killer chili, stuff and bake with your favorite fixins’ or try this Sweet ‘N Tangy Barbeque Quinoa Bean Salad, a summer party favorite which has received rave reviews from my favorite foodies.

EggplantWhy Eggplant is super high in fiber, which aids in digestion and weight management, as well as cancer protection, not only from its high antioxidant content, but as it moves through the digestive tract, it has the tendency to absorb toxins and chemicals that can lead to the development of colon cancer. Its high-water content also boosts skin tone – who doesn’t love that?

Serve Besides the ever popular eggplant parm, which you can never go wrong, or roasted on the grill, eggplant makes a great swap for meat in many dishes, due to its fibrous and filling nature. Or get meaty with this hearty Eggplant Bolognese recipe.

GarlicGarlic gets a bad rap due to its stink factor, but its powerful healing properties make garlic breath totally worth it. Not only has it been proven to reduce cholesterol, but it’s also a powerful antioxidant. Most notably, it’s a powerful antibiotic, fighting

infection and bacteria, which is particularly beneficial with the fall germ season just around the corner when garlic is making its peak.

Serve Everything Just about every recipe calls for garlic in some form. Use it liberally and double the amount called for. Your body will thank you.

PotatoesWhy When trying to lose weight, potatoes are one of the first things people cut out, but potatoes are hardly the devil’s food ({unless deep-fried in cheap vegetable oil and served out of a paperboard container}. All varieties are nutritional powerhouses, boasting a variety of vitamins and minerals, as well as being a great source of fiber-rich complex carbohydrates, something our bodies need to stay fueled {and filled}. Better yet are the skins, which are where a good portion of the nutrients and fiber live.

Serve Roast ‘em, mash ‘em, bake ‘em, or add to salads like this Quinoa Salad with Roasted Kale, Sweet Potato, and Cannellini Beans, or really go outside of the box with his Maple Sweet Potato Hummus.

PeachesWhy There is nothing like a perfectly ripe, in-season peach. Not only are they delicious, but also boast some powerful stats, including a laundry list of vitamins (A, C, E, and K), as well as being a rich source of calcium, beta-carotene, fiber, potassium, and folate. This translates to weight loss/management, maintaining that youthful glow, and sharp eye sight.

Serve You can get all fancy with your peaches, making peach cobbler, peach pie, or peach ice cream, but my personal preference is to wash well and slowly savor the fresh, juicy nectar that can only be enjoyed for a few short weeks every August. One of life’s simple pleasures.

PLAYAnything involving water. My two-year old wakes up chanting “SWIM!” and without a pool we sometimes have to be a little creative. Bring on the old school sprinkler runs, slip and slide, water balloon tosses, kiddie pools and water tables.

Easy Tip: Sponge bombs are a fun reusable version of the water balloon, guaranteed to get your littles drenched and cooled down. Soak inexpensive household sponges (cut up sponges into thirds and wrap an ouchless hair tie around them) with water and let the games begin. Great for babies and kiddos.

Easier Tip: Make a game out of transporting water in big buckets – whoever has the most in their cup after racing across the yard wins. It’s amazing how much fun this can be to a tot.

READFor Mama: The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin. I know it’s an oldie, but it has been on my list forever and I actually bought a hard copy of it to make notes in which is rare in my gadget-love-affair world. There’s something about an actual hardcover book that brings me back to my pre-baby lazy days of summer. To those not so behind the times, Rubin released the sequel, Happier at Home late last year which I’ve heard great things about too. Who doesn’t need a reminder to find that happiness within?

For Tot: For Just One Day by Laura Leuck and Marc Boutavant – a bedtime favorite these days in the Locke household. Your little will proudly “read” along with you and is sweetly reminded that the very best thing they can be is exactly who they are.

SNACKWhat is it about frozen things that make kids bend to your every whim?  My two-year old thinks that ice is a treat. I love the Zoku Quick Pop Maker ($49.95) – instant gratification at it’s finest.  Just keep the pop maker (base) in the freezer for at least 24 hours. Our pop maker is always in the freezer so it stands at the ready to defeat almost any toddler tantrum. When you’re in need of a quick snack take it out and pour your favorite liquid into it. Seven to nine minutes later, your kiddo will be well on their way to kid nirvana. This is a great way to sneak in greens too, just pour in a smoothie of mango, peach, coconut water, spinach and kale and your kids will slurp it up without knowing they’re eating veggies. Of course you can always just pour the same thing into dixie cups with a Popsicle stick, but that requires some planning – which doesn’t do much when there is a toddler tantrum that needs to be defeated.

CAREMamas, prepare for your world to be rocked. Oil of Oregano is the end-all-be-all for all things summer-bugging your little. Be it bug bites, diaper rash, skin irritation, sun burn. It’s super strong – mix a couple drops in applesauce to take orally or mix a drop with grapeseed oil or lotion for topical relief.  It’s amazing stuff.  I’m also obsessed with MD Moms Baby Silk Sunscreen Wipes (pack of 20, $26) – easy, peasy for your wiggly baby and kiddo, water-resistant and non-irritating on the eyes.

BEST OF SUMMER by Nicole Locke

Ah, the laid-back days of Summer...  When summer traditions flip from cocktail induced naps on the beach to chasing your tot through the sprinklers, it’s nice to have some fun, simple ideas in your arsenal to help unwind and create new traditions with your growing family. Is there anything more “summer” than hammocks, corn on the cob, fireworks, slip and slides, feasts on the grill, and Popsicles? We think not.

14 MoPa’s SUMMER EDITION

TRAVELjourneyBee Travel Crib ($169). Finally, a travel crib that doesn’t break your back or take up the whole luggage cart. A light-weight (under 12 pounds!), pop-up crib that my 27-month old will stiill sleep in. An absolute summer travel must-have that you can actually fold-up without having a breakdown.

CARES Airplane Safety Harness ($74.95). Another genius creation. For those of you with a little tipping the scales somewhere between 22-44 pounds, there’s no need to lug that huge and heavy carseat on the airplane with you. I always recommend checking your carseat with your bags (once your bambino is out of their infant car seat) as it makes the airport experience so much better. The harness slips over the airplane seat and weighs less than a pound, so you can even keep it in your purse. Kids stay safe and secure, and you may even get to sneak in that pre-child airplane nap that has long since disappeared!

iPad/tablet. We all know the 30-minutes a day TV/smart phone/computer guidelines for littles but when you’re traveling, those limits just have to go bye-bye if you want any peace and stillness during those long car rides and plane trips. Some of my favorite apps that work without wifi/a connection: Endless Alphabet (FREE and a great way to get your kiddos saying word sounds), Toca doctor, Peek-a-zoo, Press-here: The App, and Petting Zoo.

Nicole’s Summer Traditions:While fun, cool, laid back Austin has become home sweet home, I still can’t get used to the inferno known as Summer here (and Spring and Fall for that matter).  My heart longs for the muggy days and cool-breeze nights of the Midwest -- and the lakes, oh the Great Lakes! My family and I spent our summers “Up North” (the favorite term for all Michiganders going to the Lake for the weekend no matter what direction you’re headed) at our family cottage in northeastern Michigan. We’re headed back for much of July and I’m counting down the days.  Not fancy at all, it’s the one place where you can still walk to the penny candy store in town, spend ALL dAY on the beach and boat, never take off your swimsuit, not have Mom yell at you for tracking in sand, roast marshmallows by the bonfire at night and not require a wifi connection.  I’ve come to realize that it’s so important to have a place like this where you and your family go and escape the world to make memories together – it doesn’t have to be a cottage or a boat, maybe just a special place to camp every summer, or a certain hiking trail or beach spot you’ve come to call your own. Maybe it’s a backyard camp out – just something that you continue to do with each other and without your computer and phone.

Watermelons are perfect and quintessentially summer. Mix it up with honey and sliced almonds for a simple fruit salad.

Dried Cranberries for a sweet tang! Toss them with dark chocolate chips and sunflower seeds for a sweet and salty treat.

Cheddar Crackers are classic. Shop a variety of flavors and brands to find your perfect pantry must-have.

Strawberries for a morning smoothie, or afternoon snack – this summer staple rules.

Graham Crackers for everyone. Mom equally enjoys how this crisp cracker plays nicely with hazelnut spread and fruit. delish!

Banana, did we mention hazelnut spread? Add sliced banana to your graham crackers, hazelnut combo, and now you’re golden. Or eat as is. Why choose?

Ham for a quick savory bite. Serve open face on a cracker, top with cheese and tomato and now it’s brunch.

Red Grape adds sweetness to the party when paired with crackers, cheese and ham. Now it’s a fancy cheese plate.

Oatmeal on the trail. Mix it up with fruit and nuts and your done. Or add all the above to yogurt for an early bird breakfast.

The size of each Wean Green container offers the perfect portion, plus they fit easily into a lunch bag or backpack. Pretty awesome snack packing all around. - denell

It’s a sizzling summer afternoon, and you’re barefoot in the sand when the moment strikes. Your little one is having a serious snack attack, and you’re far from home. There’s no fuss,

because you have snack packing down to an art. We’ll skip the snack basics and dish on our short list of seasonal treats that travel like a mini-feast. Here’s our perfectly paired, and totally portable Wean Green Summer spread.

Pregnancy #1 - I didn’t look pregnant until I was 6 months.

Pregnancy #2 - I was wearing maternity clothes at 2 months.

Pregnancy #1 - Every moment of every day I thought about being pregnant. It was the

first thing I thought of when I woke up. I dreamed about it at night. It consumed my

conversations; it consumed my mind.

Pregnancy #2 - Yesterday someone asked me how “far along” I was. I looked up from

struggling to pull my toddler’s shirt over her belly for the 5th time and replied,

“with what?”

Pregnancy #1 - I scoured every website for maternity information. I tracked my baby’s

progress day by day on BabyCenter. I researched every baby-related

product under the sun.

Pregnancy #2 - When I get the rare chance to a) sit and b) “browse” the internet - it’s usually

to look for bananas and milk on www.peapod.com

Pregnancy #1 - In one of my time-consuming completely unnecessary internet searches I read that you should always lie on your left side when going to bed because it provides the best blood

flow to you baby.

Pregnancy #2 - I go to sleep (and wake up) face down every night.

Pregnancy #1 - I stayed fit. I went on fast walks. I did the elliptical. I took yoga almost every

morning.

Pregnancy #2 - I walk up two flights of stairs carrying my 30lb. two year old and call it exercise.

Pregnancy #1 - I stayed hydrated. I had a water bottle with me at all times.

Pregnancy #2 - This morning I was lucky enough to steal a swig out of my kid’s sippy cup.

Pregnancy #1 - I took naps. They were rejuvenating and peaceful; taken in a

quiet house. Pregnancy #2 - Yea, right.

Pregnancy #1 - No bladder issues to speak of. Pregnancy #2 - I now pee when I cough.

Pregnancy #1 - I judged the crap out of moms who gave their kids juice, put them in front of

an iPad at meal times, and stood there helpless while their child melted down

in a supermarket.

Pregnancy #2 - My toddler drinks juice. She knows how to work an iPad herself. And when she goes boneless at Stop N Shop, screaming at the top of

her lungs, I can’t help but smirk... at myself.

Every mom requires a few beauty essentials to achieve an easy summer look. A busy schedule takes us from office, to playdate, and playdate to date night. A little bit of polish goes a long way towards being posh.

Of course, we want it all: protection, performance and a good finish - that’s just when we’re shopping for a new lipstick.

HERE’S WHAT TEAM MOPA HAS IN THEIR BAG

“i look for products that offer a bonus - things that nourish and care for my skin and offer a clean, but finished look. SPF and a little bronzer sets the tone, mascara is a must, and if you have an extra minute, go for a full color lip. ” -denell

“Between the extreme texas heat and a rambunctious two year old, my morning beauty routine instantly gets lightened in the summer. Some moisturizer with spf, bronzer, lip balm, and a good mascara is all i need to feel fresh while still having that much needed summer glow.” - Jessica

“Keep it simple. Having products with built in SPF make my routine much faster so i can get outside to enjoy those long summer days. BB Cream for light coverage, a little bit of blush, mascara that doesn’t melt and a tinted lip balm does the trick.” -Heather
