With analog synths, hypnotic guitar melodies and Arabic-English texts that deal withfreedom and the fight for equality, they have developed their very own sound. They bring along the re-release of exactly thisalbum, with the songs being newly interpreted with a whole bunch of fellow musicians. They were labeled by no less than Caetano Veloso as the «The future of Brasilian music». With their cool sound, the 37-year-old Céu from São Paulo builds bridges to Europe. Her very sensuous, unobtrusive voice and an adventurous stylemix, which can be described as a fusion of Samba, Reggae and electronica with a hint of Jazz, Soul and Urban Folk, hasalready brought the songstress four Grammy nominations in three categories. Her fourth album, «Tropix», whichmusically follows its predecessor, was released in 2016 and features restrained excursions into disco music, yet soundssomewhat rougher and more urban.

Saxophonist, composer and bandleader Christoph Irniger impresses not only audiences but also his colleagues over andagain worldwide with new projects! His quintet Pilgrim, which shone at the unerhört!-Festival three years ago, brillierte, iscelebrated as one of the most exciting ensembles of youngdes jungen European jazz. At this year's Festival it turns intoa premiere: with Demian Cabaud and Jeff Williams Irniger brings two musicians to Zurich, whose huge experience willshed the best light on his own brilliance. Born in Argentinia, and at 40 years of age, the bassist has made his way intothe bands of Joe Lovano, Lee Konitz/Ohad Talmor, Kurt Rosenwinkel and countless other greats of the contemporaryscene. A good two musical generations older is the great Jeff Williams, who made a name for himself at the start of the70's as an outstanding soloist and sideman of taste and groove to Stan Getz, Dave Liebman and many other greatsoloists. Just the ticket against winter depression and early year tiredness: Dr. Feelgood! The Rhythm'n'Blues legends of Englishpub rock groove straightahead and without compromise. As one of the few bands to be equally successful in the«British Blues Boom» and in the punk era, their live album «Stupidity» landed at the top of British charts in 1976. Theband celebrated global renown with hit singles such as «Roxette», «Back in the Night» and «Milk and Alcohol». Althoughthe last surviving member died in 1994, Dr. Feelgood are better than ever with drummer Kevin Morris, bassist PhilMitchel, guitarist Steve Walwyn and singer Robert Kane.

The energetic appearance in his own quartet in Willisau impressed both the audience and critics alike. As a result, EmileParisien's refreshing, expressive, authentic playing has since become the symbol for the liveliness of French jazz.

Together with the young Italian pianist and theatre performer, Roberto Negro, with whom he became acquainted on hismeteoric rise as fellow musician to Daniel Humairs and Michel Portals, he has now developed a mature, measured,intelligent and surprisingly vital improvisational program, based on the musical treasure trove of the first string quartetof György Ligeti (1953/54). In fact, this work, a meandering, constantly changing sequence of 17 short passages,respectively thoughts, offers many and surprising starting points for interesting own musical ideas, which the two greatimprovisers follow in a completely unrestrained manner. A real treat, which Moods and unerhört! equally like to serve asa closing contrast to Julian Eastman's compositions in the hands of the Kukuruz Quartet a week earlier.

As an ensemble, it is difficult to trump a big band in terms of variety. Steffen Schorn has managed to compose arepertoire which shows the band in all its aspects, that provides space for each timbre and a basis for every rhythm. Onone side of the spectrum there is the very short piece «Wildbotz», a racy number that is not even a minute long. On theother side there is the almost half-hour-long suite title track, «Three Pictures», which oscillates between lightness andgripping beats, and beguiles you, only to brusquely wake you up again. Inbetween, «Africa» sounds almost meditativeand in your thoughts gets you photographing summer sunsets. In contrast, «Why Did You Go» comes over like a tender,warm wind that carries you away. With its generous melodies, «Eye Of The Wind», offers ten minutes of space tobreathe, invites you to dream. Everything is played with wit and bravado. «Three Pictures» demonstrates the incrediblejourney that the 18 musicians have undertaken in their three years of collaboration with Steffen Schorn. «We havefantasy, we are prepared to take risks» is how Schorn summarises what makes the ZJO so unique. And one should add:a dozen-and-a-half of really superb musicians.

Originally conceived by George and Ira Gershwin and Heyward DuBose as an opera, the songs such as «I loves You,Porgy» or «Summertime» from «Porgy and Bess» quickly became part of the Great American Songbook. Interpretationssuch as those by the creative duo of Miles Davis and Gil Evans helped the songs to be even more popular andindependent. Now the Zurich Jazz Orchestra breathes new life into the legendary collaboration, with none less thanMatthieu Michel tackling the trumpet part of Miles Davis in the Gershwin adaption. The Swiss jazz trumpeter is adependable set player and lyrical soloist, has realised projects with Richard Galliano and Joachim Kühn, and was amember of the Vienna Art Orchestra before it was dissolved. In 2016 he was nominated for the Swiss Music Prize.

On the 25. April 2017 the American jazz songstress Ella Fitzgerald would have turned 100. With her inimitable, eternallyyouthful, voice, The «First Lady of Song» is recognised as the the ultimate jazz songstress. With 17 she won an amateurcompetition at the Apollo Theater in Harlem and shortly thereafter was engaged by Chick Webb for his orchestra. Withher positive radiance and musical abilities, in particular her Scat singing, she quickly acquired a large audience. Wecelebrate Ella's 100the birthday with a traditional program and a songstress who embodies Ella's music and fortunatelyhas found a new home in Switzerland: Welcome, Brandy Butler! Brandy grew up in Reading, Pennsylvania (USA) and in1997 moved to Philadelphia, where she studied music. She was highly interested in Jazz, which during her studies sheinitially considered to be «Instrumental music in a mens' domain». This changed rapidly when she discovered EllaFitzgerald and songs such as «A-Tisket, A-Tasket», «Blue Skies» and «Flying Home». For me, Ella's music has somethingfamiliar, I also see many parallels when it comes to musical expression», says Brandy Butler. She was also inspired byFitzgerald's joie de vivre and playful approach to music.

The cooperation between the ZJO and trombonist Nils Wogram who lives near Zurich has been long awaited. Wogramhas long been recognised as one of the leading trombone players, and not only in Switzerland. The 44-year-old Wogram clearly has his roots in classic jazz, yet his horizon is broad: sometimes he plays Bebop, sometimes hedrags jazz into a new millenium, then he leads another Big Band project. Or he takes on a Duke Ellington classic andtransports it courageously yet respectfully into the modern age. With the Zurich Jazz Orchestra, Wogram plays owncompositions and arrangements where he is the common denominator.

As a child, Don Ellis heard the march «76 Trombones» by a brass band and was so impressed by the sound of thetrombone that he wrote it on his Christmas wish list. However, under the Christmas tree there lay a trumpet - the smallDon had written the wrong name on the note. Nevertheless, he soon found that he liked his new, shiny instrument. Later,the workaholic experimented with elements of new music, uneven rhythms and unusual line-ups - and then several yearsafter the Christmas surprise in fact began to play the trombone. Together with the «jack of all trades» trumpeter fromVienna, Thomas Gansch, came the idea for the program for this concert: the titles to be played should be like «JesusChrist Superstar», «Hey Jude» and «French Connection», for which film score written in 1972, Don Ellis later won aGrammy in the category «Best Instrumental Arrangement».
