2 Bronco Express Fall 2014 MONTINI.ORG

Dear Friends,

“It has always been the people of the MontiniCatholic school community who make ourschool a very special place.”

As you can see from this edition of Bronco Express,it has been a very exciting and busy time duringthis first quarter of the 2014-15 school year, in the

areas of classroom instruction, extracurricular activities andcommunity service learning. The main focus of this school year, on the instruction side, has been the launch of our Digital Learning Initiative forthe entire student body (pages 8 & 9). I am happy to reportthat the DLI program has gotten off to an excellent start. Our students and teachers have adjusted well to the use ofthe iPad in the classroom instructional setting. Studentshave found the iPads to be very helpful in organizing theirschool activities and homework, note taking, reading assignments, etc. Teachers are very excited about the instruction and learning resources, beyond the classroomwalls, that the iPad provides. Early on in the process, weare seeing our students and faculty members using the digital collaboration tools to facilitate project-based learning and problem solving. Although we have placed a great deal of resources and time in utilizing technology in our classroom instruction, I assure you that the we have not lost focus on the personalattention, care and academic instruction that we provideour students. The use of the iPad is just another instruc-tional tool that we provide our students, but our facultycontinue to teach, instruct and work with our studentseveryday, in the traditional manner as well. The quality ofour teachers, the quality of instruction, and the care andconcern that they have provided over the years to our stu-dents, are the hallmarks of our school community. At Montini Catholic the “Student is the Subject.” We have not forgotten this message from our founder, St. JohnBaptist De La Salle, “touch the hearts of your students, andto do this you must know your students.” Teachers and administrators in our school community, such as Kathy Filipiak and Jim Izzo (both celebrating their 40th year ofteaching in our school community this year), have certainlyembraced this message. I have a great deal of confidencethat the five new members of our faculty and staff, whojoined us this summer (page 6), will embrace this message as well.

It has always been the people of the Montini Catholicschool community who make our school a very specialplace. As one visiting grade school principal stated in anote of thanks, after our grade school teacher articulationworkshop, “Montini Catholic is more than a high school.” Finally, this is the time of the year when I reach out to themembers of our school community to support our schoolmission by making a gift to the Annual Fund (pages 4 & 5).Please consider making a gift to our school through the Annual Fund. Although our fund is thriving, our schoolcommunity participation level is well below those of otherarea high schools. The continued growth of the AnnualFund is essential in moving our educational mission forward. Your gift helps fund and support every academic, extra-curricular and spiritual program of our school. The gen-erosity of our donors has played a critical role in the growth of our school programs. People are always amazedat the amount of course offerings, programs, resources andequipment we provide our students while maintaining anaverage school wide class size of 20. When asked howthis is possible, the answer is simple – the success of ourAnnual Fund. Each year, however, the financial challengeto maintain this level of excellence continues to grow. During the upcoming months, you will be receiving infor-mation on the fund and a request for support. Please givethis request careful and prayerful consideration. As always, thank you very much for your continual supportand generosity to Montini Catholic. Have a wonderful and peaceful Thanksgiving holiday, a blessed and joyful Christmas and New Year, and, “May Jesus Live In YourHearts Forever.”

Sincerely,

Jim SegredoPresident

Montini Catholic High School students, along with Campus Minister,Mr. Michael Blanchette, and teacher, Mrs. Wanda Drabik, traveled toWashington Illinois, on Saturday, September 6th, to volunteer with the'Compassion Ministries/Tornado Relief' at Bethany Baptist Church. The school's representatives were there to assist with relief efforts inWashington, which are still necessary due to the tornado that ripped itsway through the town and surrounding communities in November of2013. Blanchette and his team helped at two sites during their visit. They helped an elderly woman clean up her yard and around herhouse, and assisted a couple who lost their entire house in the storm. Blanchette and his team came to the realization that the victims received much more than just manual assistance. "I think that theywere comforted, not only by the help, but also by having someone listen to their story." He added, "My students received much from themas well. They were affected by the stories. They learned what is reallyimportant in life, and were able to witness that people really do care, and do reach out to help in time of need."Students agreed that the trip benefited them as well. "Going throughWashington, my heart broke seeing all the peoples' lives that weretaken away from them. It felt amazing to go out and help, and to seethe smile on their faces as I helped, made me feel great inside," saidsenior, Lauren Trojnar. "This trip was a life changer for me," she continued. "I learned to be grateful for what I have."

The Joy of Giving

Montini Catholic welcomed Bishop R. DanielConlon for a special Mass on October 21st. The Mass was celebrated in recognition of theBeatification of Pope Paul VI. The Beatificationwas made official by Pope Francis on Saturday,May 10, 2014, after a miracle was accredited toPaul's intercession. The beatification ceremonytook place on Sunday, October 19th, 2014, inRome.

Montini Catholic was devotedly named afterPope Paul VI, who was elected to the papacy in1963, during the planning of our Catholic highschool. Bishop Conlon told the students that hewas in high school when Pope Paul VI waselected. He also recalled the three words spokenby Pope Paul VI that made an impact on hislife, "Jamais, jamais plus." (Translated fromFrench - "Never, never again.") The Bishop ex-plained to the students that the Pope was talkingabout the wars of the 20th Century. "We allwant peace, especially spiritual peace," he said."Be servants, not masters and you will findpeace among yourselves, in your family, yourchurch, wherever you go."

“opening up a wh iPADS FOR With their new iPads, students are now able to conducttheir research using the Gale Database, according to English instructor, Joe Voss. The company provides a fulltext magazine and newspaper database access to schoolsand libraries. Mr. Voss shared his discovery of a uniqueapp, Socrative, which allows him to receive immediate feedback from students on what they learned in the day’slesson. “iPads have made all this and so much more possible forour students to learn and grow academically,” said Dr.Kisiki. With an infinite selection of apps, interactive text-books, videos and podcasts, at their fingertips, there is nodoubt that Montini Catholic students and teachers willcontinue to be pioneers in finding new and innovativeways to use their iPads to research, create, learn and grow.

W ith only two months of the school year underway, the Digital Learning Initiative is alreadytransforming Montini Catholic classrooms.

Everyday, teachers and students alike, are discovering new andinnovative ways to put their iPads to use. From creating videoprojects using iMovie, to collaborating in Google drive for in-class assignments, the iPads are revolutionizing the way Mon-tini Catholic students are learning. Having an iPad as a tool is presenting numerous opportunitiesfor teachers to customize their lessons to suit their particularteaching style. Notability is one app that is being put to good use. The app allows students to easily handwrite their notes, sketch outideas, and even record class lectures. Another frequently usedapp, contributing to a paperless school day, is Schoology. Theuseful app allows teachers to create assignments and due datesas well as post handouts. “When I post an in-class assignmenton Schoology, my students are able to open it and move it intoNotability and complete it there,” informed English teacher,Melanie Bava. Her students also use their iPads for presenta-tions, using Keynote and iMovie. “I use the iPads pretty muchevery class period, unless the kids are taking a test.”Math teacher, Catherine Marchese, is also a fan of Schoology.“We do not need to make tons of copies anymore,” she said ina special table discussion among teachers and TechnologyTeam members in September. “More students are doing theirhomework since they do not need to bring a book home.

According to Mrs. Marchese, the timeless excuses of ‘I lost my homework or forgot my book’ are quickly becoming obsolete. She also recognized that students with special needs are able to take notes easier, and slower note takers can take pictures of the board with their iPads to help them with their studies. “The iPads have opened a whole new world of content for ourstudents. We do immediate research on any and all terms, top-ics, settings, or authors that we read and study in British Litera-ture class,” said Dr. Michael Kisiki. English teacher, RitaKeogh is also putting the iPads to work. “I am able to havestudents learn grammar and literature on the iPads from thefree books we downloaded,” she said. Her students are watch-ing videos relating to literature and taking practice grammarquizzes on their iPads. “ We find these free quizzes very usefulas a review,” she said. Mrs. Keogh’s students are also findingthe website, Turnitin.com, a cloud based plagarism preventionservice, very useful with their writing assignments.
