MONTINI CATHOLIC

HIGH SCHOOL

Page 2: Montini Catholic High School Annual Report 2013-14

I am happy to report that our 48th year of education will godown as one of our more successful school years in MontiniCatholic history. The 2013-14 school year was filled withmuch excitement and many stories of academic and extracur-ricular success.

Over $14 million dollars was awarded in scholarships and academic grants to the 170 members of the class of 2014.Over the last three years, Montini Catholic graduating seniorclasses have earned over $40 million dollars in college scholarships and grants. I am also very proud to announcethat 15 out of 18 Montini Catholic IHSA teams have earnedthe IHSA Academic Achievement Award for the 2013-14school year. This means that the 15 teams, during their seasons, maintained an accumulative grade point average of3.0 or better. Since the award was established by the IHSA in 2003, 136 Montini Catholic IHSA athletic teams have been presented this IHSA Academic Achievement Award.

We entered 2013-14 school year excited, but also anxious, concerning the launch of our iPad pilot program for our Digital Learning Initiative. This was a huge step for ourschool. Not only did the iPad pilot program provide our students and faculty with the information and training weneeded for future implementation, it also exceeded our expectations. From the enthusiasm exhibited by our studentsand faculty involved in the pilot program throughout the year,we knew this was the direction in classroom instruction thatwe wanted for our school community.

Along with the academic success that we experienced, Montini Catholic had another outstanding year in the areas of extracurricular activities, spiritual programs and community service learning. Several State, Regional andConference championships were claimed by our teams, and several Montini Catholic students were awarded individual athletic honors as well.

Our fine arts program, exhibits, concerts and performanceswere of outstanding quality, and students performed to soldout audiences throughout the year. The Campus Ministry of-fice organized and sponsored 46 community service learningopportunities during this past school year, including two outof state Habitat for Humanity trips and several weekend tripsto homeless shelters and soup kitchens in the city of Chicago.

The success and accomplishments of all our school programsis due to the leadership and dedication of our Principal,Maryann O’Neill, and the members of our school administra-tion, faculty and staff. I can confidently say that it is one ofthe best faculty and staffs in the State of Illinois.

The success we experienced in our school programs was also experienced in the business side of the school. MontiniCatholic is in a very sound financial position and, through tuition collection and development activities, MontiniCatholic met all financial obligations and was still able to invest close to $350,000 in capital improvements.

Development Activities exceeded budget on the revenue sideby over $100,000, and we saw an increase in participants toour Annual Fund. The renovation of the baseball field is justone of the many improvements last year that added to thequality of the facilities that we provide to our students, aswell as the overall appearance of the school campus.

Our administration, faculty, staff and students know that thebar has been set high as we begin our 49th school year, andwe accept this challenge. If we continue to challenge ourselves, and continue to look at ways to grow our schoolprograms and advance our Lasallian, Catholic mission of education, I truly believe we will continue to experience thesuccess and growth we have seen in our school programs and school community.

Once again, my sincere appreciation to all of you for yourcontinual support. Your generosity truly makes a differencein the college preparatory education experience that we provide each Montini Catholic student.

Again, thank you very much, and, “May Jesus Live In OurHearts … Forever.”

Sincerely,

James F. SegredoPresident

Dear friends and benefactors,

In 2013, Montini Catholic announced the implementation of our newDigital Learning Initiative for the 2014-2015 academic school year. The program embraces the writing, thinking and design tools of thedigital age, and is the largest expansion of technology in our history."This is certainly an exciting and historic event in our academic program," said President Jim Segredo. The program involves a 1-to-1 device roll-out and installation ofAirServer software in all classrooms which will conveniently allowteachers to mirror the work being done on their iPads directly ontoclassroom SMART®Boards.

During the last school year, due to the generosity of Leigh Ann Kazma, her parents, Jerry and Margaret Kazma, and the Kazma Foundation, the school was able to provide teachers with iPads for professional development training and for use in the classroom. The iPads also allowed Montini to embark on a 1-to-1 iPad pilot program with a smallgroup of students. The success of this program inspired the technology team to move forward. The devices will not be replacing teachers, but will be enhancing theclassroom environment by allowing students to develop better studyhabits and stronger organization skills. Surveys conducted at schoolsthat have already implemented iPad programs have revealed that thevast majority of students believe that they are more productive, theirclasses are more engaging, and that they take better notes while using

their iPads. They believe that using an iPad inthe classroom has been an overall positive expe-rience. In addition to lightening the load ofheavy backpacks, the use of digital textbookswill open possibilities for content delivery neverbefore possible with a hard copy textbook.Based on anticipated digital textbook adoptions, students will also experience a significant costsavings with digital textbooks.“We’ve given out 691 iPads to students,” saidKevin Beirne, Director of Digital Learning andProfessional Development. “Students now havemany options for organizing their school life,”he added. “And they have access to almost all of their school material all of the time.” Mr. Beirne also informed that teacher/studentcommunication is greatly enhanced at Montini, thanks to the iPads. And, due to the technology, students are collaborating more outside of theclassroom.Montini's Technology Director and Instructor,Peter Farina, has been an integral part of the creation and implementation of Montini's Digital Learning Initiative, and is considered to be one of the driving forces behind it. Overthe summer, he and his technology team werevery busy installing infrastructure upgrades toensure a seamless transition going into the newschool year."We are very excited to be able to roll out ourDigital Learning Program a year ahead ofschedule," said Montini Principal MaryannO'Neill. " We believe that the iPads provide ourstudents with excellent tools that will bring theoutside world into our classrooms."Montini Catholic is dedicated to providing students with the skills, tools, and experiencesneeded to succeed in today's world. The DigitalLearning Initiative will better prepare our students for college, and the future beyond.
