November 1-26 Envuronment and Disaster Preparedness

In the Wallenford Phase 3 project 25 hectares of established seedlings have been maintained through circle weeding and bushing. Seeds are being germinated for planting of new areas in the new year.

A seminar on chronic disease was held in collaboration with Links International, Greater New York Chapter, and focussed on diabetes mellitus and hypertension. Ten practical nurses attended and participated in the activities .They expressed their appreciation for having invited them. These practical nurses and others will be catylists and change agents in their communities and in their care of those persons with diabetes, and the homes in which some do work. A podiatrist gave graphic pictorials of feet damaged by diabetes and incorrect shoe sizes.. A qualified foot care specialist demontrated the care of the feet. Diabetics and others can benefit from that demonstration.The photo inserts show demonstration of foot care , and a group of practical nurses and others listening to the talk

November 7Membership/ Interclubbing

The President, secretary and membership director ,Lions Keith and Cynthia, enjoyed an evening of inter-clubbing with the South Central St Catherine Lions Club. It was a pleasant stress free

afternoon.

Membershp/ Midyear Conference

The Lion Immediate Past President, Lion Milton MJF,PDG with the Lion Secretary; The Zone Chairman Lion Dave Scarlett ,MJF,

PCST; and Membership Director Josephine and Lion Denise MJF .were the attendees at the conference

Each Lion participated in the various workshops and Lion Dave Zone Chairman chaired the evening ’s banquet.It was both an enjoyable and informative conference.

November 15 Membership /Zone Audit

The Zone Chairman, Lion Dave Scarlett, MJF, conducted the audit of the Club.Matters discussed were the role of the membership director, percentage of dues collected and information on delinquent members and the Starlight Award.. At the end of the audit he suggested that the M&A report should be circulated to all membership. The audit as done in a comfortable non-threatening manner.

November 11Leo and Youth Empowerment - Engagement of the UWI

students

The Club started a fortnightly meeting on Thursdays on the University of the West Indies (UWI) campus in order to engage the students who ha have been enquiring about the Leo Club.

This arrangement falls in line with the UWI student’s clubs and will benefit from the “spin-offs” from the UWI administration. They had their first meeting which had thirteen persons and a guest speaker.

November 27 Leo and Youth Empowerment

The Leo Advisor conducted another seminar on the heading of Youth Empowerment. The topic for this seminar was ‘Public Speaking’, at their Social meeting.. This was held at his residence.

Leo and Youth EmpowermentMentoring of UWI First Year students for academic Year 2010-

2011

Many students are from rural Jamaica and overseasThis was to assist year 1 students in adjusting and responding to the challenges of university life.The aim was to maximize their potential for academic success through a combination of social and academic activities.Expectations of the students were: Students to take responsibility for their learning, to clarify academic nd career goals while preparing for the future ,to increase their social awareness. A and to reduce the drop-out rate for commuting students after year one of their university lives.Activities to date.Introduction and getting to know you. The draft plan for the year was distributed and agreed on. Social Graces.. how perform/act if invited to a formal dinner.The Mona Visitors lodge prepared three course meals to facilitate this delivery. A professional was engaged, who took the students through the pace from walking into the room, to sitting the guest… to proper use of the utensils. The students asked a number of questions during the session and were surprised at the high level of expectation at such dinners.Stress Management Stress Management was the topic for day.The students came prepared to discuss this topic. One of their peers delivered on behalf of the group.He describe stress as “the wear and tear our bodies experience as

we adjust to our continually changing environment”The topic was discussed under the following headings:-

How to eliminate stress

How can I tell what is optional stress for me.

How can I manger stress better.

How to overcome your stressors, and your emotional physical reactions,

Recognize what you can change.

How to reduce the intensity of your emotional reaction to stress.

Build your physical reserve

Maintain your emotional reserveStudents were asked to prepare and present the following: The Vision and Mission statement of the UWI, the Crest

and what is signifies a brief history of the UWI. They took turns to present the result of their search on the above.

This was an eye-opener for a number of these students.

Time Management was the topic slated for this day. The students were asked to come prepared to make presentation on the topic.Lessons learnt from this exercise..

November 11, 2010Visit to the Bob Marley Museum The students visited the Bob Marley Museum at 56 Hope Road. They were given a brief history of the world renowned Reggae Icon his life history, outlining his struggles and challenges in his quest to be different and to triumph above the odds in order to

achieve success and fame. They commented that greatness is an attitude and not something achieve due to your lineage.November 18, 2010Discussion on the Ethics or absence of ethics in the Jamaican parliamentarians.A lively discussion ensued with the students offering solution to problems plaguing the Jamaican society. One came away with the feeling that all is not lost and that there is hope for Jamaica. November 25, 2010Movie Day.Unstoppable.The students were taken to the Carib Cinema to the movie UNSTOPPABLE stared by Denzel Washington Denzel Washington plays a railway veteran assigned to show the new guy on the job (Pine) the ropes. Is a movie about a train with no one on it exciting?.It is hauling a substantial amount of molten phenol, a very toxic chemical.The real story takes place in the state of Ohio, not Pennsylvania. Also, the train’s number was 8888.Lessons learntThe reality that business organizations will sacrifice a good worker to achieve the profits they desire.
