Mass Contact Education Program on Food Safety, Standard And Unsafe Food
Two days training programme on awareness of food safety to
consumers and food business operators through “Information, Education
and Communication (IEC) Activities” were organised by Consumer
Association of India (CAI) and Tiruchirappalli Consumer Movement in
collaboration with National Service Scheme of Bharathidasan University
Constituent College, Lalgudi during 27th and 28th June 2013. This
programme was organised with financial assistant from Food Safety and
Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).
The first day, on 27th June 2013, the programme was started with a
rally taken out by the NSS Volunteers. Around 200 students of the college
were participated in the rally. During the rally the volunteers were
distributed the pamphlets, notices and raised the slogans related to food
safety, food standard and consumer awareness. The rally was inaugurated
by the Mr. S. Karthick, Principal, Bharathidasan University Constituent
College, Lalgudi. Students were roaming around 3 K.M and covered the
major roads, shopping areas and Hotels. After the rally there were the
lecture delivered by Mrs. Sagunthala Srinivasan, Organiser and Trainer,
(FSSAI, CH &TPI) Mr. Thamos, Trainer FSSAI and Ms.Amutha Trainer FSSAI
on various topics related to Food Safety and Standard.
In second day (28th June 2013) Training programme, welcome address
was delivered by Dr. M. Raja, NSS Programme Officer, Bharathidasan
University Constituent College, Lalgudi and Mr. S. Karthick, Principal of the
college delivered the Presidential address. Mr. David Muthunayakam, Food
Safety Officer, Tiruchirappalli was the chief guest of the function. He
delivered the lecture on Food safety and Standard. During his lecture he
explains, how the consumer should know the quality and standard of the
foods and how the consumer should identify the food adulteration etc.
Mrs. Sagunthala Srinivasan, Organiser and Trainer, (FSSAI, CH &TPI)
explained the need for this training programme and the usage of this
programme, How it will be useful to students and their family etc. Mr.
Thomas, Trainer FSSAI delivered the lecture on Food safety. During his
lecture he explained various food safety measures and methods. In the next
session Ms. Amutha, Trainer, FSSAI delivered the lecture on Food Safety
Acts. She explained about various acts related to food safety and standard.
Further she explained what are the punishments and penalties for violation

of these acts etc. Mr. Elamurugan spoke about the Food safety
measurements. Mr. Anbu Selvan, Food Inspector, Lalgudi delivered the
lecture on various practical examples and causes related to food safety
violations and Punishments. Finally there were interaction sessions,
students raised many questions on various topics of the lectures and
resources persons clarified the doubts of the students. Mr. Elamurugan
proposed the Vote of thanks.

The NSS Cell of Bharathidasan University in association with Mrs.
Sagunthala Srinivasan, Organiser and Trainer, Food Safety and Standards
Authority of India (FSSAI) organised the Food Safety Awareness Rallies in the
following colleges
1. Srimad Andavan Arts & Science College
The NSS units of Srimad Andavan Arts and Science College,
Tiruchirappalli conducted the rally on 24th June 2013 Monday at 10 am. The
rally was started from Amma Unavagam, Srirangam to Srimad Andavan Arts
and Science College via Raja Gopuram, South Uthra Street, East Uthra
Street and Nelson Road. Nearly 200 NSS volunteers were participated in this
rally.

The rally was flaged off by Sri N. Kasturirangan, Secretary and
Correspondent, Srimad Andavan Arts & Science College, felicitated by
Dr. J. Radhika, Principal and Mr. M. Pitchaimani, Vice Principal of the
college. The NSS volunteers distributed pamphlets and notices to the public
and Hoteliers.
2. Holy Cross College
Holy Cross College conducted the rally on 25.06.2011. The rally was
flagged of Mrs. Sagunthala Srinivasan, Organiser & Trainer, FSSAI, from the
college. The rally comprising the NSS Volunteers and Programme Officers of
Holy Cross College passed through Teppakkulam Post Office, W.B. Road and
came back to the college.

3. Jamal Mohamed College
The NSS units of Jamal Mohamed College, Trichy organised the Food
Safety Rally on 27.06.2013.
4. Shrimati Indira Gandhi College
As per the instructions of the NSS Cell of BDU, the NSS units of
Shrimati Indira Gandhi College, Trichy took the food safety awareness rally
on 29.06.2013. The rally was flagged off by Dr. L. Ganesan, NSS
Coordinator in the presence of Mrs. Sagunthala Sreenivasan, President,
Trichy Consumer Movement, Mrs. S. Vidyalakshmi, Principal, Mr. David
Muthuraj, Trichy corporation food safety officer, Mr. V. Azhagar, Trichy
police officer. Later Mr. David Muthuraj delivered a seminar on “Food safety

and quality assurance act”. Around 160 NSS Volunteers and 4 NSS
Programme Officer took part in the rally and in the seminar.

RRC POs Meet & Peer Educators Training Programme
The Red Ribbon Club (RRC) of Bharathidasan University in association
with the Tamil Nadu State AIDS Control Society (TANSACS), Chennai
organised the RRC Programme Officers Meet and Peer Educators Training
Programme recently at A/C Auditorium, Bharathidasan University,
Tiruchirappalli.
The Honourable Vice-Chancellor of Bharathidasan University, Dr.
(Mrs.) K. Meena inaugurated the programme by lighting the Kuthuvilaku at
11.00 am. Dr. L. Ganesan, RRC Coordinator (i/c) welcomed the gathering.
Shri. Shailesh Kumar Yadav I.P.S., Commissioner of Police, Trichy City was
the Chief Guest for the programme. Mr. K. Shanmugam, Senior CSR Officer,
EQUITAS, Trichy briefly explained about the activities of RRC.
Dr. K. Meena released the RRC Pamphlet & RRC Posters and she said
that “the students must involve various extension activities like NSS, NCC,
RRC, in which they will do service for the layman at the field level and
thereby they can develop their own personality, it facilitate them to reach the
good career in the society. She also lauded that the students have the power

to change the society by way of creating awareness on various society related
issues” while Shri. Shailesh Kumar Yadav, received the first copy of the RRC
Pamphlet & RRC Posters. Shri Shailesh Kumar Yadav, Commissioner of
Police, said that the students have to learn values and do a lot of service to
the society. He also expressed feel proud that the role of youth, particularly
NSS and NCC in making awareness among the public in connection with
AIDS / HIV awareness, road safety and traffic rules and regulations, right to
education. He also has a plan to launch youth programmes of
Tiruchirappalli City Police not only for educated youth but also for interested
rural uneducated youth. He also stated that “it was the responsibility of the
student community to create a healthy society. He added that there was a
plan to utilise the students in various services to the society along with the
police personnel.

Aruchamy, Registrar (i/c), Bharathidasan University, Shri. Selvanayagam,
Syndicate Member of Bharathidasan University offered felicitations. Mr. T.
Sampath, Consultant, Voluntary Blood Donation and Blood Safety,
TANSACS, Chennai delivered the Vote of Thanks.
Public Relations Officer of Bharathidasan University, RRC Programme
Officers from 110 RRC implementing colleges of Bharathidasan University,
Professors and RRC Peer Educators from various colleges participated in the
programme.
Technical Session held in the afternoon. Mr. T. Sampath, Consultant,
Voluntary Blood Donation, TANSACS, Chennai spoke about “Need and
Importance of Voluntary Blood Donation and Role of RRCs”, Mr. K.
Shanmugam, Senior CSR Officer, EQUITAS, Trichy delivered a talk about
“Role of Youth in Health Issues” and Mrs. R. Jesariya Mary, Former RRC
District Manager, Trichy spoke about “Celebrating Life”.

Inauguration of Part-V Activities
The inauguration of Part V activities for I UG Students of Jamal
Mohamed College, Trichy was held on 5th July 2013 at the college
auditorium by 10.30 am in the presence of the Secretary and
Correspondent, Dr. A.K. Khaja Nazeemudeen and the Treasurer of the
Management Committee, Janab K.A. Khaleel Ahamed.
The Principal, Dr. A.M. Mohamed Sindasha, presided the function and
explained that the students of Jamal Mohamed College have wide
opportunities to choose any one of the 11 areas of extra-curricular activities
under Part-V NCC, NSS, YRC, RRC, Student Exnora, Consumer Club, Leo
Club, Anti Dowry Association, Sports and Fine Arts to develop the
personality and more particularly the leadership qualities.
Dr. K. Parathsarathy, Director, Institute of Entrepreneurship and
Career Development, Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirappalli was the
special Invitee, he highlighted on the significance of NSS and insisted the
students to develop a disciplined life for a better career and living.
Dr. S. Ahmed John, Coordinator for Extra-Curricular activities
enlightened the importance of Leo Club, Rotoract Club and Anti Dowry
Association.
Dr. A. Mohamed Ibrahim, Additional Vice-Principal spoke on various
job openings and A.K. Khaja Nazeemudeen, Secretary and Correspondent
felicitated the occasion.
Dr. S. Mohamed Saliqu, Vice-Principal proposed the vote of thanks.

Release of NSS WISH Annual Report
The Release of NSS WISH Annual Report of the year 2012-13 and
Honouring of NSS Volunteers who have attended the Adventure Camp in
Arunachal Pradesh was held on 11th July 2013 am at A/C Auditorium,
Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirappalli.
The Honourable Vice-Chancellor of Bharathidasan University and
Founder Patron & Chairperson of WISH, Dr. (Mrs.) K. Meena inaugurated
the programme by lighting the ‘Kuthuvilaku’. Dr. L. Ganesan, NSS
Coordinator (i/c) & Organising Secretary of WISH welcomed the gathering.
Mr. V. Ganapathy, Coordinator of WISH and Special Correspondent of ‘The
Hindu’ (Retd.) briefly explained about WISH. Mrs. G.K. Krishnaveni,
Advisory Committee Member of WISH expressed the experience of the field
visit during the awareness programmes held at gross root level.
Honourable Vice-Chancellor of Bharathidasan University and Founder
Patron & Chairperson of WISH, Dr. (Mrs.) K. Meena while releasing the NSS
WISH Annual Report said that WISH had started off in fine style in
conveying the message of Health and Sanitation through the NSS Volunteers
in eight districts (Tiruchirappalli, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam,
Pudukkottai, Perambalur, Ariyalur and Karur) under Bharathidasan
University jurisdiction. Over 12,000 NSS Volunteers through their special
camps had covered about 200 villages and conveyed the message to the
villagers.
The mission of WISH is to propagate intensively good Menstrual
Hygiene Management and Sanitation practices to students in all the colleges
in the University and also to selected areas in other universities in the state.
Already enquiries are coming about the good work done by WISH through
NSS Volunteers from other states also.
Considering the importance of safe disposal of Sanitary Napkins under
the Public Private Partnership programme with financial support to the tune
of 55 lakhs from Maharatna Public Sector Company, BHEL of Trichy,
under Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Scheme. Already 25
institutions have been provided Electrical Incinerators in the first phase and
125 more institutions will be covered shortly.
She felicitated and distributed the certificates to the 27 NSS
Volunteers and 2 Programme Officers who attended the Adventure Camp
held at Roing in Arunachal Pradesh. She also appreciated the service
rendered by the Programme Officers during their three year tenure.
Dr. T. Ramani Devi, Vice President of TRIOGS while receiving the first
copy of the report said Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR) was high in India, 75
per lakh, which are preventable. Ignorance of good healthy food habits and
personal and Menstrual Hygiene Management were the main reasons for this
high rate of MMR. WISH could play a key role in popularising the message

of Nutritious food and MHM and thereby reduce the rate of MMR.
Dr. M.S. Ashraf, Member of Tamil Nadu Medical Council, Trichy
pointed out that a large number of college students especially girls were
suffering from Anaemia. More balanced diet and intake of cereals and
pulses can cure this menace.
Mrs. Jembaga Ramakrishnan, Coordinator, All Ladies Clubs of Trichy
offered felicitations. Mr. V. Ganapathy, Coordinator of WISH and Special
Correspondent of ‘The Hindu’ (Retd.) proposed the Vote of Thanks.

and schools of Trichy District were participated in the function.

Disaster Management Training
The NSS units of TBML College, Porayar organised the Disaster
Management Training Programme on 11th July 2013 at the college campus.
Dr. Jones Gunasekaran, Principal of the college inaugurated the programme.
The team from National Disaster Response Force, Govt. of India showed a
demo to the NSS Volunteers about the rescue operations during the disaster
period.
Blood Donation Camp
The NSS units of Imayam Arts & Science College, Thuraiyur, Trichy in
association with the Primary Health Centre of Veeramachanpatti organised a
blood donation camp at the college campus on 13th July 2013.
Mr. Periyannan, Chairman, Imayam Educational Institutions, Mr.
Andi, Secretary, Imayam Educational Institutions, Dr. Rajappan, Principal,
Imayam Arts & Science College, Dr. Cheran, Director of Health and family
welfare, Trichy, Dr. Mercy, Doctor of Blood Bank and other dignitaries
participated in the programme.
Around 75 units were donated by the NSS volunteers.
