Church Staffing

We give THANKS for God’s Willing Servants

• As most of you know by now, Pastor Tom Park has left –taking a call to Bethlehem Lutheran Church in St Paul, MN where a primary ministry focus will be to be a missionary to the Hmong population. We thank God for him and the time he served here. We pray for God’s Blessing upon him as he serves Jesus and His people in St Paul.

• So guess who is coming out of retirement “again?” If your guess is Pastor George Krueger than you are right! We are very pleased that he is willing to once again serve God’s people at ORLC. His plan is to serve through mid-Dec when he and Annette sprout wings and become “snow-birds!” Pastor George will visit the shut-ins, preach at least once a month and teach the Tuesday morning Bible class. Welcome Back!

• Alicia Bement is in transition as she looks for another full time job, which (if it is 40 hours a week) will cause her not to be able to continue as our part time business manager. Her time frame to be finished as our business manager is not firm, but most likely will be with us through September. Cindy Sprouls (former business manager here) is willing to come back on an interim basis and see if her eye will handle the computer work required. So pray for Alicia as she seeks employment and pray for God’s Blessing on Cindy’s eye.

• Campus Ministry: Well we will “wing it” relying upon volunteer members, college student Peer Ministers and whatever assistance Pastor Bruce is able to provide. Members are needed to provide Sunday lunches (Carole Borchers has graciously volunteered to head this up); cookies for cookie Sunday’s (once a month) and to lovingly be proactive in visiting with and welcoming the students who worship with us. We are blessed to have about eight people who have volunteered to lead college topic discussions called “Connect at Bistro” on Tuesdays at 7pm at Courtyard by Marriot. Mark Noennig will be the on site facilitator for this weekly gathering.

• Carole Borchers has volunteered to help out with the Board of Servant Ministry and to assist Pastor Bruce in organizing Adult Bible Studies.

Glory to God Dedications!!! We have much to be thankful for in this Mission and Ministry program and so we want to CELEBRATE and Give Thanks to God on September 29th for what HE has done among us. What are we celebrating?

• $20,000 and that has and will be given to support the ministry at Lutheran Island Camp and to support mission ministries in Germany, India and Africa.

• The installation of the new digital organ which interfaces with our pipes. We’ve been enjoying the awesome music it produces.

• The totally new renovation of the kitchen! How are we celebrating? We will do so in both worship services on Sept 29th with special music, prayers and praises. And we will also have a dinner after the late service to “check out” that new kitchen. A voters meeting will follow the dinner where we’ll have an update on the progress of the new boiler (furnace) installation and renovation. (See voter’s minutes elsewhere in the Record for information on this.) Serving Our Savior With You!

“Christians never say ‘good bye.’” (C. S. Lewis)

It is so hard to say farewells and goodbyes. The development of the transportation really spurs people to be mobile and thus causing many to say more “goodbyes.”

I really enjoyed my ministry here at Our Redeemer. It is very sad for me to say farewell to my brothers and sisters at this congregation. The warmth of your love helped and shaped me as the pastor and you made my ministry enjoyable. Although, I am moving down to St. Paul, I will always remember you and your love and will continue to keep you in my prayers. I will miss those laughs, smiles, warm handshakes, and hugs. What a privilege for me to serve you as your pastor!

It was a pure joy to work with the church staff. I will remember your kindness and love. It is my prayer that Our Redeemer would find a willing servant as soon as possible to carry out the work of the Lord.

When we are in Christ, we will never say “goodbye.” That does not mean then we will never experience sorrow and sadness. However, if we cannot see each other on this side of eternity, we will certainly see each other in our heavenly home. I will do my best to come up and see you after all, I will be in the same state!

I want to leave you with the Lord’s blessing. You have heard the Aaronic blessing from either Pastor Bruce or me at the end of the worship service. “The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you; the LORD turn his face toward you and give you peace.” (Numbers 6:24-26).

May our Lord Jesus continue to bless you! May He take away your sadness and heartaches! Please remember Christians never say good bye! See you soon!

I LOVE YOU!

Serving the Lord along with you,

Pastor Tom Park

VOTER’S MEETING AUGUST 25, 2013 OUR REDEEMER LUTHERAN EVANGELICAL CHURCH MOORHEAD Wayne Settergren opened the meeting by having Pastor Bruce begin with prayer. Gary Euren provided a history of furnace issues, recap of mechanical engineer’s report and the legal situation. The potential amount we would be able to recover due to the liability of each party involved would not offset the legal fees. We have not received bills from mechanical engineer or attorney. Potential of mechanical engineer expenses to be considered charitable contributions or no fees assessed. The two different system bid proposals were reviewed. Each provides 1 year warranty on labor which is typical for industry. Equipment has a longer manufacturer’s warranty only for defects in the manufacturing process. • Flush system, replace equipment and same type of cast iron boilers. Parts take about 2 weeks to

arrive and can be installed in 3 weeks. o Grant’s Mechanical – approx. $62,500 (does not include flushing) o Peterson Mechanical – approx. $58,000 (does include flushing)

• Flush system, replace equipment and install copper boilers. Parts take about 4-6 weeks to arrive and can be installed in 2-3 weeks.

o Grant’s Mechanical – approx. $109,000 o Peterson Mechanical – approx. $88,000 o Wrigley – approx. $105,000

Backup plan in the event the weather turns cold quickly: • Run the existing boiler as we did this spring • Utilize space heaters overnight to warm building and turn off during day. Concern over impact of any delays on the CCC; need heated building by mid-October at the latest or this will impact accreditation and operation of facility. CCC is not allowed to use space heaters when children are present. LCEF loan paperwork has been submitted for $150,000 for 15 years for Glory to God outstanding pledges and furnace costs. Doug Schmitz made a MOTION and was carried to accept the Peterson Mechanical bid to replace and flush the existing system as well as explore maintenance program options for members to complete or to hire work to be done and recorded. Matt Wychor made a MOTION and was carried to adjourn. Meeting was closed with prayer led by Pastor Park. Submitted by Brandy Rodine, Secretary

MIND, BODY, AND SPIRIT

Many of you may remember Our Redeemer members Pastor Ray and Kathryn Melheim. While they have both passed on to their heavenly home with our Lord and Savior, I wanted to share a little bit about their son, Richard Melheim who is an ordained Lutheran pastor.

Richard is the founder of Faith Inkubators and the following is the mission statement from their website at www.faithink.org/about:

“Faith Inkubators is dedicated to the health and welfare of all God's children and the whole Christian church, its congregations, families and children. We strive to make the home the primary inkubator of faith for disciples of all ages by replacing classroom models of education with parent-involved small group models.”

Richard’s biography describes him as an entrepreneur, author, cartoonist, comedian, speaker, publisher, playwright, songwriter, family counselor and has appeared on 50 network television news shows from WNBC-NY to KTLA to CNN consulting on family issues.

Richard recently published the book Holding Your Family Together: 5 Simple Steps to Help Bring Your Family Closer to God and Each Other. Richard’s book outlines five steps in a bedtime routine lasting 5-15 minutes each night that have the potential to promote security and happiness. The five steps may seem simple but, the difficult part is consistently doing the five steps. I readily admit that the five steps Richard outlines were much easier when my children were younger as they were dependent on routine and guidance for bedtime. As my children have gotten older and take care of their own bedtime routine, I see how the five steps are still important and much needed.

Step 1: Share Share your highs and lows from the day. Avoid asking “how was your day?” as the most likely answer will be “fine” but ask “tell me something good/bad that happened today” and begin a discussion. Step 2: Read Read a key Bible verse or story every night to help fill your child with the “good stuff”. Think of all the negative messages kids are receiving all day long- fill them with God’s Word instead. Step 3: Talk Talk about how the Bible reading relates (or could relate) to the highs and lows of the day that were discussed. Step 4: Pray Pray out loud with each other for the highs and lows of the day. Prayers of thanksgiving, praise, requests, guidance, support, and love. Step 5: Bless Bless each other as the children settle into bed for the night. If you are interested in more details of Richard Melheim’s five steps, his book can be found on the website listed above or amazon.com.

GriefShare sessions to begin October 28, 2013 at 6:30pm at

Our Redeemer Lutheran Church

From Mildred Tengbom in Grief for a Season, “tears are not a sign of weakness but a sign of strength. Our tears testify to our love and loving calls for great courage, for in loving we always risk getting hurt.”

Whether it has been months or years since a loved one has died holidays, anniversaries, or birthdays can stir up emotions like it was just yesterday. This is normal. It is important to acknowledge these emotions and allow yourself to deal with them in a way that helps you:

1. Talk to somebody who will listen and let you share your feelings. Grief does NOT have a time limit. People grieve differently.

2. Keep a journal to write down your feelings and thoughts about your loss. 3. Read the Psalms and write down verses that speak to you. 4. Visit the familiar environments associated with the lost relationship. 5. Say goodbye to the relationship as it once existed. Let family and friends help you create new

memories, without blocking out those of the person you lost. 6. Pray. Thank God for the time, relationship, and memories that you had with that person. Ask

God to provide you with comfort and peace

Isaiah 25:8 “He will swallow up death forever. The sovereign Lord will wipe away the tears from all faces; he will remove the disgrace of his people from all the earth.”

A new session of GriefShare will begin Monday, October 28 at 6:30pm in the Prayer Room at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church. GriefShare features Biblical teaching on grief and recovery topics. Each session includes a video seminar and group discussion. The videos include top experts on grief recovery, dramatic reenactments about living with grief and real-life stories of people who have experienced loss. The sessions include a workbook. GriefShare is offered at no cost to participants and is open to the community. Invite a friend to attend with you. More information can be found at www.griefshare.org. Please check it out for yourself or pass it on to someone who may benefit from this group.

Gracious & Loving Father, You have created each of us, and have given us this great gift of life. Help us to treasure each moment, the happy ones and the sad ones, the healthy ones and the weak ones. When our lives are running smoothly, help us to turn to You in thanksgiving and praise. When our lives are in turmoil, help us turn to You for comfort and strength. By Your Word, assure us of Your loving presence in our daily lives. Keep us ever mindful of Your loving promise to always be with us. We pray now for these fellow members of Our Redeemer:

THE RECORD Sept 2013 VOLUME 52

Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University is coming back to Our Redeemer! The class is on Tuesday nights from 6:45-8:30, starting September 24th and going through November 19th. Childcare is available (with a suggested donation). What is Financial Peace University? Financial Peace University is a biblically-based accountability class that teaches us to manage their resources in a godly manner. God has given us more than 800 scriptures showing us how to handle money His way! The class takes the teachings from God and turns it into real action in our lives through a step-by-step process taught by best-selling author and financial counselor Dave Ramsey. Financial Peace University was recently revised and updated. It is now a 9-week life-changing program that empowers and teaches you how to make the right money decisions to achieve your financial goals and God's plan for your life. The course includes practical lessons on eliminating debt, building wealth, giving like never before, and much, much more! Who is Financial Peace University for? It's for EVERYONE, from the financially secure to the financially distressed. Over 1 million families and individuals have attended Financial Peace University. Applying God's Word radically changes your life. On average, graduates have paid off over $5,300 in debt and saved $2,700 during the program! What Will I Learn? In this program you will learn: 1. Step-by-Step Cash Flow Planning Luke 14:28: "For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, whether he has enough to finish it." 2. Debt Snowball Plan Technique to Eliminating Debt Proverbs 22:7: "The borrower is slave to the lender." 3. How to Invest Wisely Ecclesiastes 11:2: "Give portions to seven, yes to eight, for you do not know what disaster may come upon the land." How can I Sign Up? Look for signup sheets on Sunday, September 1st. There is a fee of $93 for each family for the class materials. People who have participated in Financial Peace University before, whether at Our Redeemer or somewhere else, can take the class for free. Contact Dan Biebighauser (701-371-7798) with any questions.
