PastoR observations:

Invite!

[Jesus said] “…you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” - Acts 1:8b “Then the master told his servant, ‘Go out to the roads and country lanes and make them come in, so that my house will be full.’” - Luke 14:23 I love invitations, don’t you?! This time of year maybe you’ll get invited to a graduation party, a summer or fall wedding, a getaway to someone’s cabin or a road trip to visit a good friend. Of course some things we’ll do even if we don’t get an invitation, but it’s SO MUCH better to know beforehand that we are welcome, that we are expected, and that the people are excited to have us there. Like you, I am so much more likely to participate in something when there is relational accountability. If someone that I have some sort of a connection with invites me, expects me, I am much more apt to show up.

I’ve noticed something around Bethany lately – you are inviting people! You are sharing your excitement for what God is doing in your life and in the lives of people around here and you want to share that with others. You are inviting friends and family members, neighbors and co-workers. You are inviting people who have been a part of Bethany’s past to come back and check out what’s going on now. I just want to tell you that you’re doing great! Keep at it! We have Good News to share. Not only that, but what you are doing is an essential part of being and growing as a disciple of Jesus. Remember that the key thing that Jesus says he will teach his followers to become is “fishers of people.” Reaching out and inviting others will grow your faith in tremendous ways. One of the key reasons that any of us is involved in the Church is because someone invited us in a personal way just to come and see what they are excited about. Now you and I get to do that for others and be a part of God’s reaching out to save the lost. The Good News of God’s love is not meant to be kept a secret. Let’s keep having fun and giving people the joy of invitation. Yours in Christlife, Pastor Robb

May Preaching Plan

May 7 (Communion Sunday) Text: 1 Corinthians 5:1-13 Message: “Christian pt. 4 – Insiders and

Outsiders”

Jesus said, “Go and make disciples.” (see Matt 28:19) He didn’t say, “Go make Christians.” The first Jesus-followers worked to win people to the faith by the way they loved one another and held one another accountable. Something goes wrong whenever Christians try to leverage anything other than love to influence people. We need to get a handle on our judgment. May 14 Music Sunday!!! We’ll take a short break from the “Christian” series to celebrate Mother’s Day with a special Bethany tradition. Come and join us as we fill God’s house with songs of praise and lots of special music from our choirs. We’ll also have a short Mother’s Day meditation from our own United Methodist Certified Lay Speaker, Mrs. Bobbi Atkinson. Don’t miss it!

May 21 (Keith Sager Preaching) Text: Matthew 5:1-16 Message: “Christian pt. 5 – Salt and Light” Jesus says “You are the salt of the earth,” and “You are the light of the world.” (see Matt. 5:13-14) Jesus wants you to live in such a way that when people see your good actions, they don’t say, “What a nice person,” but instead recognize something so extraordinary that they begin to consider God might be involved.

May 28 Text: John 1:1-3, 10-17 Message: “Christian pt. 6 – The Tension of Grace and Truth” Jesus “came from the Father, full of grace and truth.” (John 1:14). Truth says, “Hey you’re accountable.” Grace says, “Oh, you’re forgiven.” Truth says, “You’re broken.” Grace says, “You’re fine.” There’s tension there! To be complete human beings we absolutely need both Truth and Grace. And that’s exactly what Jesus brings us in the messy ways of how he loves us. We’re going to have to learn the messy ways of love too.
