HINDU GIRL'S 'GHAR WAPASI' FUELS ALIGARH COMMUNAL TENSION

This comes even as parts of Aligarh have been wracked by communal tension ever since the killing

of two persons from a certain community on Diwali day. On Monday, too, a youth was beaten up

by members of a different community for "harassing" a girl in Babri Mandi area of the city. In

fact, in a first, police used drones to identify houses where stones were being stored on terraces

after skirmishes broke out over the issue, injuring three.

By now, Gabbard has left any ambiguity about her religious beliefs behind. She identifies as a

member of the Gaudiya Vaishnavism Sect of the Hindu faith.It’s a faith she shares with India’s

leader, Narendra Modi. But they share more than that— they share a hard-right political

philosophy that is at odds with Gabbard’s perceived role as a liberal touchstone in the

Democratic Party.Modi, a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party, or BJP, is well known in India

for his hardline right wing politics. He was the governor of the state of Gujarat during riots in

2002 that killed over 2,000 Muslims. Modi has always skirted around his level of responsibility

for the violence; on the one hand he can appeal to moderates by claiming ignorance, on the other

his claims of ignorance are delivered with winks to the country’s more extremist right-wing

elements..

The man allegedly leading the massacre is a Buddhist monk named Wirathu, who was named by

the Time Magazine as Myanmar's Bin Laden. He heads an extremist group known by its

Burmese initials Ma Ba Tha, also known as Movement 969. Wirathu once called the Rohingyas

“wolves” and justified his death march against them by saying “they are only well behaved when

they are weak.”
