Kwale International Sugar Company (Kiscol), a Kenyan sugar producer, plans to raise USD 40m-USD 50m to build an ethanol plant and a higher-education centre, said Harshil Kotecha, project director.
The company is working on feasibility studies, which it plans to complete in about five months, he added.
The two projects are likely to be funded via separate facilities but the overall debt-to-equity ratio is targeted at 60:40, said Kotecha.
Kiscol has been in talks with local and international banks, and commercial and development finance institutions, but a firm request will only be submitted once bankable feasibility studies are complete, he said.
The company is targeting facilities with nine-year maturities and interest rates in the region of 7% a year, said Kotecha.
The sugar distillery is likely to cost about USD 40m and take about two years to build. The higher-education centre, which will be a medical school located not far from the ethanol plant, will cost about USD 10m and take just over a year to finish, said Kotecha.
Kiscol specializes in cane agriculture and processing. It was established in 2007 and is part of the Pabari Group.

Cavalla Resources, a Liberian iron ore project owned by Jonah Capital, a South Africa and Ghana-based investment management company, is looking to raise up to USD 80m in debt for its USD 160m Buchanan Project, according to Fidel Jonah, executive director of Jonah Capital.
Speaking to Debtwire on the sidelines of the West African Mining Investment Summit in London, Jonah said that the company was on the verge of finalizing its definitive feasibility study for the 1.2Mtpa iron-ore fines project.
Jonah Capital has to date funded the project through an earn-in agreement from strategic partner Kumba Iron Ore, part of the Anglo American group, and pre-paid offtake from Oreport, a BBBEE partner in South Africa. Oreport is part of the Grindrod Group.
Once the DFS is completed the company needs to move to mine construction, with a target of starting production in 2016, said Jonah.
Jonah Capital is looking at a 50:50 split between debt and equity for the project financing.
It is already talking to Africa Finance Corpora-tion in Nigeria and South Africa’s Rand Merchant Bank about the equity component.
Jonah Capital would want to maintain a 51% controlling stake in the project, but all options are on the table with regard to financing, be it strategic partnerships through earn-in or equity participation, offtake to traders, private equity, project financing or a loan, Jonah said.
“Speed is the essence,” he added. "We’d be willing to pay a little bit more [in terms of cost of capital] if we could secure the funding quickly.”

Petrobras Oil & Gas is putting together a reserve-based loan secured against its Nigerian assets, according to two bankers close to the deal. The facility for the Brazilian-owned, Africa-focused energy exploration and production com-pany will total between USD 700m and USD 1.4bn, added the bankers.
Terms including the maturity and pricing are still under discussion, one of the bankers said, adding that the tenor is likely to be between five and seven years. Around 10 lenders are looking at the deal, which will probably be covered by a club of lenders.
Petrobras Oil & Gas is a joint venture between Brazilian parent Petrobras’ international subsidiary and an investment vehicle owned by BTG Pactual.
