Dear Friend
The Lordrsquos blessings be w ith
you and those you hold dear as
we find comfort in the mate rnal
embrace o f the Virgin Mary towhom this month is dedicated
As all the faithful continue to
experience the joys of the
Easter se ason may all of us
draw particular strength a nd
inspiration from the momentous
occasion that began the month the bea tification of Pope
John Paul II This towe ring figure of faith and e xample of
utter commitment to Godrsquos work wa s a loyal student a nd
friend of the Friars Often he drew attention to our
Founde r St Dominic and the Orderrsquos tradition and mission
through the agesmdashnot least
our firm belief in the power of
reason the human intellect
to d emonstrate the existence
of God in an age of
indifference disbelief and
nihilism It is one crucial
aspect of our contribution to
the New Evangelization called
for by the late P ontiff
During these weeks leading
up to P entecost the first reading at Mass focused our
attention on the Acts of the Apostles What have w e
heard The very beginnings of the Church are rooted in
Christrsquos promise that the
ldquopromise of the Fathe rrdquo
the Ho ly Spirit wou ld be
given to the apos tles By
faithfully preaching Jesus
Christ this band of
apostolic missionaries is
the channel of grace for
many Jews and Gentiles
Their hearts were on fire
with the love of Christ
The peace o f Christ
flowing from His
Resurrection comforted
them as the y fearlessly
and at g reat personal risk
preached and taught allthat Christ had
commanded them
In countless wa ys we
continue to live tha t first springtime in the life of the
Church We too are called to evange lize todayrsquos peoples
Dear Colleague
As you may recall my mentioning before my home parish is StGertrudersquos inCincinnati where theProvincersquos novitiate islocated My wife andfamily are blessed to bein day-to-day contact
with this large group of holy men And theparish is known to be areal beacon in the city
with the many apostolicundertakingssupported by the Friarsand the parishionersOn any given day inaddition to Mass andthe outstandingpreaching of the Friars
we can be engaged insome faith-formationactivity at our parish This indeed is a great
blessing for our lives which we know is notthe same experience
for many but is in factrather the exception The expansion andleveraging of thepreaching mission of the Friars through
various media istherefore not simply anadditional project thatthey are undertaking assome sort of noveladditional activity It israther an imperativeand essentialcomponent in thestrategy and mission of the New Evangelization Let us do all we can tosupport them inleveragingexponentially the reachand effectiveness of their preaching missionndash which we share withthem through ourBaptism - through the
website and outreachthrough various mediaIn this way together
with the Friars we willanswer our commoncall to Go into all the
world and preach thegood news to every creaturerdquo Mark 1615 Thank you for your

and confront cultures Hearing the Acts of the Apostles
we are exhorted to tirelessly and fearlessly preach Jesus
Christ to people who have become indifferent dismissive
and hos tile to faith In this act of faithful witness we also
will come to a deeper understanding and a ppreciation of
the great gift of faith we ha ve received
Literally and figuratively through a grow ing range of
ministries guided by the New Evangelization the Friars of
the P rovince of St Joseph a re fanning out throughout the
land their hearts burning with love of Christ and bringing
the message of Godrsquos never failing love to all people Andwe are not alone through your support and prayers you
stand w ith us every day shoulder to shoulder
mdashcollaborating w ith us and empowe ring us to carry out
Godrsquos vital invitation first made to St Dominic to prea ch
Jesus Christ pe rfectly to all For this all the Friars are
profoundly grateful to you
On a pas toral visit to Venice Italy Pope Bened ict XVI
ea rlier this month called atten tion to a pa rticularly
essential aspect of our common mission the re-
evangelization of a Christian community whose faith
mdashuntested by the ldquopersecutions and the most d ifficult
trialsrdquo of ages pastmdashldquoruns the risk of being emptied of its
truth and its dee pest elements It runs the risk of
becoming a

This superficial
faith is wha t
happens says the
Holy Father when
people still
consider
themselves to be
Christians and go
through the

power and the living presence of the Lordrdquo This is
precisely the preaching task of the Friars to restore a
sense of a tangible relationship w ith Christ an
ldquoexpe rience of faith in Jesus crucified and risenrdquo tha t can
ldquoenlighten the path of e xistencerdquo through faith and reas on
which leads to an e arnest reconciliation to Christ and

The New Evangelization is not fundamentally a matter of
programs or long discourses about Christ It is a renew al
in the faithfulrsquos relationship with Jesus Christ that makes a
difference in the ir lives and in the lives o f others who
witness the ir faith The invitation of the Acts of the
Apostles continues today ldquoto put on the Lord Jesus C hrist
(Rom 1314)rdquo
Thanks to your indispensable generosity and friendship
the Friars through the ir fidelity to preaching the Word of
God and to the solemn celebration of the Eucharist are
fulfilling a ministry that as the Ho ly Fathe r puts it
ldquorestores to us the e yes of faith so a s to se e e verything

Fostering Dominican Spirituality
Building a New Priory
A most tangible dimension of the Friarsrsquo growing presence
in the Province and in the miss ion lands o f Easte rn Africa
are the de velopment of our Priories and apostolates Our
houses also called Priories are the b rick-and-mortar
setting that give us the proper space to fully live out the
Dominican Way of
Life o f community
worship and study
in service of the
apostolate and
growth in
holiness
It is with profound
joymdashand deepest
gratitude to all of

at large We have had a Dominican prese nce there formore than 50 years but never a Priory which will soo n
allow for the much-needed growth of the community of
Friars there
Recently one o f our most distinguishe d Friars Archbishop
Augustine J DiNoia OP Secretary of the Cong regation for
Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments was
