Dear Friend

Godrsquos blessings and peace be with

you as the month the Church

dedicates to St Joseph quickly

draws to a close Fortunately like

St Joseph the qu iet time we have

spent attending to the Word of

God in these initial weeks of Lent

through prayer fasting and almsgiving prepares

us for new graces not yet imagined

St Joseph was blessed by God to be the Guardian

of the Holy Family because he w as open to receive

the messa ges o f the ange l in his dreams This

ldquoopennessrdquo in sleep flowed from his virtuous and

just life during the day Indeed such a righteous

life w ith decision made for the good of Mary the

Son of God whom she carried in her womb and for

her parents w as done quietly It took a man of

great strength and

moral character to act

beyond what the Law

permitted for

satisfaction St

Joseph was not

consumed by the

darkness of shame

but stood in the light

of true love of another As he lived

his life quietly as w as

his way he received

the revelation beyond

his imagining in the

quiet and secure

slumber of the Lord

As the Universal

Patron of the Church

St Joseph continues

to intercede for us so

that we too may grow

in virtue and be

attentive to the Word

of God in quiet ways

Did not Jesus s ay ldquoThen your Father who sees

wha t is done in secret will rew ard you (Matt 64

6 18)rdquo Relying on the successful intercession o f

St Joseph we are hoping to establish a shrine in

his honor to promote the virtues o f his quiet way I

will speak to you more about that in future

communications In the meantime I invite you to

reflect on the quiet wa y of St Joseph a s he

responded to the Word o f God in his life in my

reflection which marked the Patronal Feast Day of

our Province St Joseph the Husband o f Mary

person and via teleconference Your dedication and hard work on the Foundation in service of the Dominican Friars ismotivating not only to me butalso if I may speak for them tothe Friars as well It gives

witness to the fruit that is bornfrom our faithful collaboration

with the Friars in the missionthat we the laity share withthem

Basilica of Santa Sabina in Rome which has been a

Dominican tradition for centuries (For more on this

magnificent occasion and the history of the

In his new book

ldquoJesus of

spoke of the

ministry of both

St Francis and

St Dominic

during the 12th

and 13th

centuries as

ldquoone way in

which Christ entered anew into history

commun icating His word and His love with fresh

vigor It was one way in which He renewed His

Church and drew his tory toward Himself

Spirit is responding to the most urgent

needs of our (global) culture and indeed of

each pe rson which I spoke of in my Missive

last month echoing our Ho ly Father ndash the

need not for food and clothing but for God

The Holy Spirit as is evidenced more and

more is calling forth the Dominican charism

to address this need

In February Benedict XVI said that St

Dominic ldquoreminds us that a missionary fire

must always burn in the heart of the

Churchrdquomdasha quality that in the past 50 years

sharply declined bu t that is happily again on

the rebound thanks to the New

XVI celebrated the Ash Wednesday Liturgy in the

Basilica of Santa Sabina in Rome which has been a

Dominican tradition for centuries (For more on this

magnificent occasion and the history of the

basilica please click here)

In his new book

ldquoJesus of

Nazareth Part

IIrdquo Benedict XVI

spoke of the

ministry of both

St Francis and

St Dominic

during the 12th

and 13th

centuries as

ldquoone way in

which Christ entered anew into history

commun icating His word and His love with fresh

vigor It was one way in which He renewed His

Church and drew his tory toward Himself

At a general a udience last January the Pope

credited the tw o saints w ith being ldquoable toread lsquothe

signs of

the

intelligently perceiving the challenges tha t

the Church of their time w ould be ob liged to

facerdquo including the ldquow idespread need hellip for

religious instructionrdquo Today too the Holy

Spirit is responding to the most urgent

needs of our (global) culture and indeed of

each pe rson which I spoke of in my Missive

last month echoing our Ho ly Father ndash the

need not for food and clothing but for God

The Holy Spirit as is evidenced more and

more is calling forth the Dominican charism

to address this need

In February Benedict XVI said that St

Dominic ldquoreminds us that a missionary fire

must always burn in the heart of the

Churchrdquomdasha quality that in the past 50 years

sharply declined bu t that is happily again on

the rebound thanks to the New

Evange lization in which todayrsquos Friars are

graced by God to play a crucial role

Dominicans He studied under the famous

theologian

and author

Fr Reginald
