The Breastfeeding Coalition of the Wabash Valley is working to expand community support from local employers.

Effective July 1,2008 Indiana put a new law on the books specifically for

Breastfeeding Mothers . The intent of the law was to protect breastfeeding

in the workplace. The law states any employer with 25 or more

employees shall provide a private location (other than a toilet stall), where

an employee can express the employee's breast milk in privacy during any

period away from the employee's assigned duties.

This law not only supports Mothers who return to work and are committed

to breastfeeding their infant (s), it has proven to cut absenteeism in the

workplace where women work; cuts healthcare costs; is a great way to

GO GREEN ! decreases amount of waste that goes into landfills; saves

energy as no electricity or gas needed to heat breast milk; reserves our

water resources to mention a few of the advantages to our communities.

Studies have shown that the more support mothers have to continue

breastfeeding the longer breastfeeding lasts. The latest recommendation is

to exclusively supply breast milk to an infant for the first six (6) months of

life. Continued breastfeeding for the first year to a year and a half is rec-

ognized more beneficial.

Just think helping your community and helping improve the health

of a mother who breast feeds and improve the health of her breasted infant

all in one package.

If you or a member of your family breastfed or are presently breastfeeding

and mother expresses her milk while in the work place, the Breastfeeding

Coalition of the Wabash Valley wants to hear from you. Fill in the

Breastfeeding Works form available at the Maple Center to tell us why

you think your employer deserves recognition regarding Breastfeeding.

In August the Breastfeeding Coalition of the Wabash Valley will present

an award to the employer most recognized for outstanding support of

mother (s) breastfeeding in the work place. Deliver or send the form to

the designated address at the bottom of the form or obtain a form from any

Coalition member; Lactation Counselors from any hospital or clinic; WIC

agencies in the counties listed below or your local LeLeche League of

Terre Haute.

Also, if you are interested in helping build support of breastfeeding wheth-

er at home, the workplace or in public the Breastfeeding Coalition

of the Wabash Valley would like your input to strengthen support of

Breastfeeding in our communities (includes counties: Clay, Parke, Sulli-

van, Vermillion & Vigo Counties). The Coalition meets the 1st Monday

of most months on the 3rd floor of the Professional Building across from

Union Hospital.

Book Review: Reversing Fibromyalgia:

The Whole-Health Approach

to Overcoming Fibromyalgia through

Nutrition, Exercise, Supplements and

Other Lifestyle Factors

Do your muscles ache as if you had the flu but they ache all the time?

Have you been diagnosed with fibromyalgia but would like to try a

natural approach? In Reversing Fibromyalgia: The Whole-Health

Approach to Overcoming Fibromyalgia through Nutrition, Exercise,

Supplements and Other Lifestyle Factors Dr. Joe Elrod discusses

symptoms with tender points (picture, pg. 46) that help a doctor to

diagnose fibromyalgia, possible causes, and a practical approach to

managing and reversing it.

Most of the nutrition suggestions could be found in any nutritional

book like eating meals that include complex carbohydrates, high

fiber grains, fresh fruits and vegetables. Replacing sugary snacks

with seeds, nuts, fruit (those that contain pits), yogurt and fruit

smoothies helps to reduce sugar intake and increase fiber content in

the diet. Three meals and 2 small snacks a day is recommended rather

than 3 larger meals. The chart of Fibromyalgia Power Foods lists

specific foods to counteract the effects of fibromyalgia with reasons

why they do what they do.

His reason for exercising inspired me to increase my exercise regime.

He said it increases blood flow, endorphins, T-cells which boost the

body’s immune system as well as serotonin and growth hormones that

reduce pain and repair muscles. He suggests yoga for stretching,

walking for cardiovascular but finding a routine that one likes and

doing it regularly is most important. Exercising, except relaxing yoga

techniques, should not be done before bedtime.

Because fibromyalgia sufferers often do not digest food well he

suggests additional supplements especially antioxidants , C, E, B6,

trace minerals, selenium, zinc, boron, magnesium, manganese, and

other supplements like CoQ10, malic acid and echinacea. These

should be done with the advice of an appropriate health care person.

One chapter is dedicated to detoxification with

vinegar solution, goldenseal and other natural

detoxifiers.
