Devotions – November 2015 Introduction

This year we are looking at Paul's letter to the Ephesians. For the past few months we have been seeing God’s

plan for the church and the world – that is to bring all things in heaven and on earth under Christ starting with

the church. This month we look at how to conduct our relationships.

The Reading Eph 5:15

Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil.

Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but

be filled with the Spirit, addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with

your heart, giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, submitting to one another

out of reverence for Christ. 5:22

Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the

church, his body, and is himself its Saviour. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their

husbands. 5:25

Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her

by the washing of water with the word, so that he might present the church to himself in splendour, without spot or wrinkle or any

such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish. In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He

who loves his wife loves himself. For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church,

because we are members of his body. “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall

become one flesh.” This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church. However, let each one of you

love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband. 6:1

Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honour your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a

promise), “that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.” Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but

bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. 6:5

Bondservants, obey your earthly masters with fear and trembling, with a sincere heart, as you would Christ, not by the way of eye-

service, as people-pleasers, but as bondservants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart, rendering service with a good will as

to the Lord and not to man, knowing that whatever good anyone does, this he will receive back from the Lord, whether he is a

bondservant or is free. Masters, do the same to them, and stop your threatening, knowing that he who is both their Master and yours

is in heaven, and that there is no partiality with him. (ESV)

The teaching

We live in a society that could be called secularized Christianity. Generally Christians and others live

alongside each other in relative harmony. However we live in different worlds. Tonight’s subject highlights

that difference. To the world the word “submission” causes a great deal of angst. It implies the lesser power

being controlled by the greater power – of the greater power getting its own way. But that is not the way of the

Christian. In our passage we see that the Christian is to walk in the ways of the Spirit not in the ways of our

flesh for that is debauchery; in our living – the days are evil and people are turning away from God and we need

to walk carefully; in our worship – being filled with the word of God as we meet together; and finally in our

relationships – we are to submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. This is the cornerstone phrase of

tonight’s passage and it is to be applied in all our relationships. We see how this is to be worked out in

marriage, in our families and in our work.

All of us are equal before Christ, but there is a hierarchy in the roles we fill with greater and subordinate roles.

In all these relationships Paul starts with the subordinate role and asks that we submit to the role and the

incumbent as to Christ. The context makes it clear that this passage does not demand that a woman submit to

an abusive relationship. He then gives the charge for the person in the greater role to full fill it in the way of

Christ, who (in the words of Phil Ch 2) being in very nature God took on human likeness and humbled himself

to death on a cross for our sakes. The greater role is not to force the subordinate role into submission, but to

honour and serve the person in that role as Christ honours us having given his life for our sins. Husbands are to

love their wives, parents are not to provoke their children but discipline them in the ways of the Lord, masters

are not to threaten or abuse but to recognize that they have a Master in heaven.

Prayer

Father, may we live lives worthy of the calling you have given us making every effort in all humility to submit

to Christ and to one another in all our relationships whatever role we may be fulfilling.
