Launch of community Library and Resource center in Badagaon, Barabanki, uttar pradesh
On 7th March 2018, READ India launchedCommunityLibraryandResourceCenterinBadagaon,Barabanki,UttarPradeshunderaprojectfundedbyCallisons,USA.
TheobjectiveoftheCenteristoworkon3keypillars of READ –Education Enterprise andCommunity Development. This communityis largely mint growing community. Theproject is focused onworking onwomen’sempowerment and skill development forentrepreneurship.
The Center is well equipped with books,computers,earlychildhoodsection,womenlivelihoodprogramme.Seriesofworkshopswill be held on health education, youthdevelopmentprogrammesandlifeskills.
The inauguration was done by Mr. JeffJohnson, Vice President of Callisons; theGuests of Honour present on the occasionwereMrs.KalpanaDasgupta,Trustee–READIndia, Ms. Tina Sciabica Executive Director– READGlobal and senior leadership fromWrigleyandASI.

tcs-Adult Literacy programmeAbout the programme
READ India has partnered withTCS (TATA Consultancy Services)to implement their flagship ‘AdultLiteracy’ Programme across all theStates/locations wherein READ Indiaisworking. This is a computer basedfunctional literacy programme whichenables any illiterate to acquirebasicReading, wRiting and aRithmeticknowledgeinlessthan90hours.
Thesoftwareusesmultimediafeaturesalong with flash cards, animatedgraphicspatternsforeasyrecognition,retention,andrecallofletters/words/numbers.
READ India is implementing thisprogramme with an overall target of50,000 literates across all the READlocationsinIndia.Theprogrammewillachieve the target in two years’ timeperiod.
In the first quarter of itsimplementation, the programme hadalready reached and benefitted over6000 illiteratepopulations across theREADlocations.

The current reach of the programme has reached 9 states andis getting implemented with a team of 100 facilitators and 10supervisors.Thestatewisebreakofthebeneficiariesisasfollows:

READIndiainpartnershipwithOracleishelping300girlsandwomentoenhanceandimprovetheirlearningandliteracylevels.ItisbeingachievedbyprovidingearlychildhoodlearningopportunitiesforgirlsthatsupplementformalschoolingandfunctionalliteracyclassesfortheirmothersatREADCenterslocationsinHaryanaandRajasthan.Thetargetgroupinclude:
• 50girlsaged3to6yearstobetrainedundertheearlychildhooddevelopmentprogramme.
• 100girlsaged6to10yearsenrolledtobetrainedunderthereadingandwritingskilldevelopmentprogramme.
• 150womentobetrainedforadultliteracyprogramme.

career guidance for youth
A session on career guidance was organized for the youth atREADIndiaAmazonCarescenterofSonipat.Mr.DeepakMiglani,an expert on career guidance conducted the session for 24beneficiaries.Theresourcepersonguidedthebeneficiariesabouthow to search for a suitable job on relevant site and the skillsrequiredforrelevantjobsearch.
Health check-up camps for the community
HealthCheck-upcampsforadolescentsgirls andwomenwere organized forthe beneficiaries during the month.Womenbeneficiariesgotaplatformtosharetheirpersonalhealthissuesandget guidance from Dr.Surjeet Gupta,a renowned gynaecologist. Total 70women beneficiaries participated inthecampduringthemonthofMarch.Health check up camps for seniorcitizensandmenwereorganized.Dr.Babbar,arenowneddoctorexamined63beneficiariesduringthecamp.
Health awareness session for adolescents girls and women
Session on Family Planning wasorganised at READ India AmazonCares centres of Sonipat, Manesarand Tauru for adolescent girls andwomen.Dr.SurjeetGupta,arenownedgynecologist conducted a session for62 beneficiaries. The beneficiarieswerebriefedabout thesafemethodsoffamilyplanning.

Newprojecthasbeen initiated inLudhiana,Punjab.Programofsewing-stitchingandbeautyculturehasbeensetforthewomenbeneficiaries of Katana Sahib and Rampur village of Ludhiana.Total 30women beneficiaries are registered under sewing andstitching at Katana Sahib Village. The beneficiaries continuedlearning operation and maintenance of sewing machine draftpaper making, draft test and suit stitching. Total 35 womenbeneficiaries are registered under beauty culture at Rampurvillage.Thebeneficiariescontinuedlearningtheoryofthreading,oily skin, facial and waxing. The beneficiaries were guided onwaxingpractice.

A Session on Entrepreneurship and small scale business wasorganizedatREADIndiaAmazonCarescentersofTauru,Manesarand Sonipat. Thebeneficiarieswerebriefed about the resourceandskillsrequiredforinitiatingasmallscalebusiness.Mr.DineshMiglani, an expert on entrepreneurship training conducted thesessionfor72womenbeneficiaries.

My name is AnarkaliSahariya and I ama housewife livingwith my husbandand two childrenin a Bhanwargarhvillage of Jaipur. Myhusband works asa carpenter and heis the only breadearner for our familyof six. I have beenliving in poverty myentire life and due toinadequate financialsupport, I never gotan opportunity toattend school. I livedinasmallvillagewithmy parents when Iwasachildandwedidnothaveagovernmentschool inourvillage. IlliteracyhasbeenthemajorcauseofalotofobstaclesandproblemsIfacedinmylife.Itnotonlyhamperedmyselfconfidenceinyoungerdays,butalso,tilldate,impedesmyabilitytosmoothlygetthroughday-todaycommunicationandsocializing.
One day, READ India team visited our village and oriented usabouttheAdultLiteracyprogrammebeingimplemented.Ihadnosecondthoughtsandimmediatelyconveyedmyinterestofbeingapartoftheprogramme.
My excitement was unmatched as I was finally being givenan opportunity to fulfill my dream. My husband and childrensupportedmeonthisdecisionsincethebeginningandIdidnotfeelasenseofguiltorburdenasthesessionswerebeingconductedforusfreeofcost.Theteamalsoprovideduswithbooks,slate,chalk,pencilanderaser.ThisstirredafeelingofrelivingmychildhoodexceptthefactthatnowIwasactuallyexperiencingwhatit’sliketoattendschool.
Istartedattendingtheclassesregularlyandgraduallystartedtolearna lot.Earlier, Ididnotknowhow todobasic calculationsandsometimesendeduptakinglessmoneyfromtheshopkeepersas change.But thisprojecthashelpedmeovercome suchbasiclimitations. Calculating basic transactions is now relativelymucheasier formeand Iamnowable toconfidentlydealwithshopkeepersandvegetablevendors.
Also,IcannowreadandwriteHinditoacertainextent.ThoughIamnotcompletelyfluentwithit,InowhavethemotivationtotryandstudyHindieverydayandinculcateahabitofreadingthedailynewspapertohelpmelearnitbetter.
